Well, i choose to be enslaved by math/science, lol. About Poli 10, i took a class = to it during the summer with a prof who majored in poli sci at ucsd (so he knows ucsd classes specifically and his poli sci class at cc is extremely similar to poli 10) and it was really easy (although i'm a politics junkie). Didn't have to do much reading because the prof went over all of it in class, except in a few cases, plus reread things night before tests. I recommend taking it, you learn a bunch of useful stuff if you don't pay that much attention to politics/political history and still learn some good stuff even if you do.

I love politics. Go Hillary Clinton 2008!!!

hmm. ok thanks for all the responses guys.

i have another question lol. How is COGN 1? i've looked on ratemyprofessor and comments say that it is a fun and good class. is there anyone who can verify that?

if that's cogsci, i know tons and tons of people who swear that it is the easiest class on the planet. if it's not, sorry. don't know what COGN stands for

yea i meant COGS, i did a little typo there. hmm ok thx for the comment ucsdhopeful.

Oh, one of my suitemates is a cogsci major!!! I just remembered, hehe. He said that COGS 1 was extremely fun, and very interesting. If its difficult or not, I can't really say...

this might be a really stupid question..but i'm gonna ask anyway. i've noticed that on schedule for classes, I see a lot of comments in red, which says, "(insert class name) sections will not meet before the first main lecture." what does this exactly mean?

section = discussion. therefore if the discussion you sign up for happens before the first lecture, don't go to discussion that day.

you guys I really need advice, I literally can't sleep at night because of class anxiety :(

any any any advice would be appreciated

I'm in Muir. I want to take a course that will fulfill both a GE and the cultural diversity req.
and I've narrowed down my Fall Schedules to:

MCWP (because I have to)
Foreign Lang. for Native Speakers
PSYC 3 (because I like psyc/fulfills social sciences seq)
LTEN 28 (fulfills cult. diver. req/plan on taking LTEN 27,29 to fulfill humanities seq)

or

MCWP
Foreign Lang. for Native Speakers
VIS 3 (because I like art-making/fulfills fine arts seq)
and the options of ETHN 1A, USP 3, or CGS 2A (fulfills cult. diver. req/I would continue social sci. seq. with one)

any advice on which is more attractive/easier for the first quarter?

From what it says in the Marshall GE/Graduation Requirements, there is no "'double-dipping' (i.e. cannot use Math 20A to clear both Math and Disciplinary Breadth requirements."

Also, check your Degree Audit. It should give you some idea of what you need to do...

I'm in Muir, and the cultural diversity requirement can be used to fulfill other reqs.

"Can I use my Cultural Diversity course within my GE or major or minor requirements?

Yes. The Cultural Diversity course does not have to be considered an extra required course if the student plans to use it as part of another requirement."

Will check Degree Audit, thank you!
edit: Are they only available to upperclassmen? I'm an incoming freshman

ethn1a was a horrible class for me because of the TA who controls 100% of your grade. but for others, it wasn't bad. they never explained why...they said it was ok or interesting and they didn't do that badly.

i'm planning on taking COGS1 this fall and i'm an incoming freshman
i heard it was actually really confusing or something because the class consists mostly of guest speakers so the topics jump around and it's hard to figure out what'll be on the tests. Shrug whateve. still taking it..haha

hey ihavenolife, mind if i post my classes here for critiquing too? starting another thread doesn't seem to be worth it...

^yea man, that's what i started this thread for, so that ucsd gurus can help n00bs like us =)

major: cognitive science
classes:
Math 20B John Eggers
Intro to Cog Sci (COGS1) Rafael Nunez
Chem 6A Christina Johnson
ANTH23: Debating Multiculturalism David Pedersen
History of Film (VIS84) Babette Mangolte

i got recommended to math 20c but i don't feel ready/confident enough so taking Sage's advice, i'm going to just sit in on math 20b (esp since i can't take it for credit anyways)

sooooooooooo........any advice about teachers, classes, TAs, etc...
and this might be a question of preference but if a lecture and discussion were on the same day-- would it be better to have discussion before or after the lecture?

Thanks

woah, my counselor (virtual advising) just told me with an AP Calc AB score of 3, I can't take MATH20B. Is that true? I have a conversion sheet right in my hand (from the bioE department) that says Calc AB score of 3 means that I can take MATH20A for credit if I want to, OR that I'm exempt (which I'm assuming means I can skip MATH20A).

Any input? I hope my counselor is wrong :( I literally built my schedule around math20B.

thank you!!!!!

ethn1a only had 1 review of the prof, but a lot of other reviews for CGS and USP mentioned that the TA's were terrible...so the schedule with VIS 3 seems better? I think I'll go with VIS 3 and critical gender studies...just kiddingggg it's full, I'll go with USP 3?

kiwi: Johnson and Eggers are excellent teachers. You won't have a choice in the TA, and sometimes even the professors don't have a choice (few applicants, the department picks for them, etc.) so it's a luck of the draw if you get a good one or not. And yes, discussion time is a matter of preference, though if the class is MWF 10am (just an example) and discussion is Fri at 11am with a midterm that Friday...section will probably get canceled. :) stuff like that

oneday: which college are you in? If it's Muir, it says you can skip 20A. Usually the colleges are very coordinated in AP credit, but check to make sure from your college.

thank you ucsdhopeful!
I'm in Warren. According to their 05-06 AP conversion chart, and score of 3 on AB exam means "exempt Math 10A or 20A, or may take 20A for credit". That means I can skip 20A and go on to 20B, right?
I don't think the new version of conversion chart is available (link on the warren website doesn't work).
thanks! :)
