help plz: required courses at fordham...

so ive been contemplating going to either fordham's CBA or CUNY baruch, i want to major in business.. to be honest I have no idea whats the better choice or whats going to benefit me in the long run, I know most people can get jobs easily b/c of baruch's alumni association but fordham just seems like a better school all around..

anyways, whats really turning me off about fordham is what im hearing about theology / philosophy / ethics / literature and such courses being REQUIRED?
could anyone explain this in more detail?

and.. is it worth the essentially wasted effort that I will have to put into these mandatory courses to choose fordham over baruch?

I worry about my GPA at fordham, if im taking classes I have no interest in, I tend to do poorly.. im sure the same goes for most people..

what can I say...what classes ARE you wanting to take...

and no its not the same for most people- they know that in life you often have to do things that aren't your favorite things to do, and in work that is REALLY true

and often, people who take classes they didn't think they would like find that they LOVE the classes, that it opens their eyes and they do even change their majors...

so, if you on;y do well at things that "interest" you, college is gonna be tough

to add to citygirlsmom statement, you are probably going to have to take those courses anyway. Most schools have core curriculi. It would be highly unusual for a college to allow a student to graduate without having good reading and writing abilities.
I can sympathize with you, because when i first saw the list i too was overwhelmed, but it is not as bad as it seems.
Its really up to you where you want to go. I'm sure CUNY Baruch has its own requirements, perhaps not as extensive as Fordham's, and that might be what you are looking for. Hey, who doesn't want some extra freedom in choosing courses.

I'm in CBA.

The core requirements suck, especially for CBA students because you have to take the liberal arts core and the business core. The liberal arts core consist of (at least for my class year) 2 English, 2 History, 2 Thelogy, and 2 Philosophy. The business core consists of 2 Math (CBA-specific), 2 Stats, 2 Accounting, 2 Management, 1 Marketing, 1 Finance, 1 each of Info System, Business Law, Business Communications, and Business Ethics.

College of Business Administration

I hate liberal arts, but I can tell you personally that if you know how to work the system you can get away easy classes in the liberal arts core. What sucks mainly about all these requirements is that they are a waste of time for people who know what they want to do. I wish there was more freedom in the classes you want to take but then again that's something you agree to when you go here. So the best you can do is work the system as best as possible. Really quick here are some professors to keep in mind:

J Denniston/J Aguilar for Theologies
K Combellick for Bus. Com
D Capello for Bus. Law
A Konopka for Philosophy
B Karacaovali/J Iqbal for Stats
Lizza for Accounting
M Heidenberg for English

The trick is to know how many credits you have. The more credits you have the earlier you register for classes. And if you don't get the classes hold off till the next semester or next year and start taking classes in your major. Can't stress the importance of working the system when it comes to getting the classes you want. You may have to sacrifice taking 1 or 2 bad classes BUT for the most part you should be good. Surely enough, I looked up all these professors on RateMyProfessor.com and all of em were as good as they said. They keep classes fun and realistic and cut out all the BS workload some professors try to give you as if that'll teach you anything. Look them up and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm still holding out on one of my history req. because the professors just suck so much. Don't take US History for your second History req (you get to choose which history you want). It's so dry and boring at the college level because there is nothing else to cover so the professor will choose a couple of specific topics as they stroll through US history and they will beat that topic to death!

My circumstances may have been a bit different than your's because I came in with extra college credits and my major isn't as packed as others BUT it's still doable for other majors. And easy way to get some extra credits each semester is to do CBA Service Learning (you can do it up to three times for a total of 3 credits, which are all easy As). And there's other things you can do as well.

I have friends who go to Baruch. They like it there. Many people I talk to say that if you want to do business just go to Baruch over Fordham. I had the same situation you had and I chose Fordham for it's 'prestige' which I think might play some role in potential interviews for that first job.
