I recently found out I got an F for the fall semester in my ART class for forgetting a works cited on my extra credit assignment. My TAG was approved by Davis and San Diego though. I know for a fact when I retake it in the Spring I will get an A for sure, does this jeopardize my tag?

forgot to mention that I am an pre managerial econ major.

Well if you have overall 3.0 or higher you should be fine for SD… since what you are getting in Spring won’t affect your grade I think. So making up that F might be useless I believe, but wait for others input I’m not 100% sure with this type of stuff.

what will be your GPA by the end of this fall? for UCSD, you need to have a 3.0 or better by the end of the fall semester to be approved for TAG. For Davis I think it is a 2.8 depending on the major.

Currently it is 3.23, however my professor already entered the F into the system and its coming out to be 3.0 right now without my other classes. I’m not sure if I can maintain the 3.0 by the end of this semester but I’m trying my best to get a good GPA. I’m mostly trying to get into UC Davis, I’m just worried that my TAG is invalid now that the F is applied.

@Vintage

so what your saying is that the grades don’t matter? as long as I maintain an overall GPA of 2.8?

no, im pretty sure that gpa has to = 3.0 (for sd) or = 2.8 (for davis) AND you cant get anything lower than a C

but really, you should check with a counselor

I’m not really worried about my GPA, just really worried about the F, I know for a fact I can get an A for sure next semester so it will sort of cover the F

So without that extra credit assignment would you have had a C…? Did you try emailing the professor your works cited and seeing if she can work something out with you? I know if I was a professor I would change your grade if something silly like that kept you from passing.

@edch5908: You can get below a C in a class, but you can’t get below a 2.0 overall for the semester. Doing so will invalidate your TAG.

Also, your TAG hasn’t been approved by UCSD yet. Nobody’s has because the UC apps haven’t been processed yet and won’t for months.

Sorry for threaedjacking, but similar issue here.

I may have to drop a physics course (third semester of physics) since I’m at borderline B/C and don’t want to risk getting a C on one of the pre-req courses. If I drop the physics course and re-take it during next (spring) semester, would that change anything at all?

My GPA will be above 3.0 at all times (for ucsd) and I’ll still be completing all the course that I said I will complete by end of spring (for uci and others)

@david: The only courses that you absolutely have to have done by the end of this semester are your math and English courses. Phsyics isn’t impacted, either, so no, it won’t matter if you take it next semester instead. Just maintain a 3.0 at all times and TAG over. You’ll need to finish IGETC by the end of spring, so if physics is part of your IGETC qualification make sure you get it done by spring.

^ Thanks :)

Had my IGETC done sometime last year. I was just finishing up the pre-req’s for other UCs as well as to save me some money. And the 3.0 is cumulative right?

So I don’t have to worry about the F? It is an Art class which is just an elective course. I’ve already tried to fix things with my professor, except shes really anal about something like this. I have my IGETC and my core classes for my major completed. I just have to maintain at least a 2.0 for fall and spring semester?

I also plan to retake that Art class with a different instructor and I know for sure I’ll be receiving an A

^ I think it might be 2.0 for the spring semester, BUT you STILL have to maintain 3.0 I believe (including the last spring semester)

@david: Yes, the 3.0 is cumulative. Also, you’ll get additional information upon receiving the conditional offer of admission from UCSD in March/April that stipulates any requirements they have for the spring semester. Last year, UCI set it so that you had to maintain a 2.0 GPA and couldn’t get below a C in any class (just for the spring, not the fall.) UCSD has something similar, but I’m not sure what it will be this year. Expect it to be the same as UCI’s, except you need to maintain a 3.0 cumulative (UCIs was a 2.8 last year.)

@edch5908: As long as you can maintain a 3.0, the F isn’t going to matter. You can retake it in the spring if you want, but it’s not going to factor into your GPA when deciding your admission offer.

For the spring (as I clarified above) you’ll get a conditional admission offer that sets certain requirements for spring/summer. For UCSD, it’ll probably be a 2.0 and nothing below a C while maintaining that 3.0 cumulative.

Retaking it in the spring won’t matter, as the admission decision will already have been made before those grades come out.

I’m still a bit confused as to what to do now, should i retake the art class?
and since my classes in the Spring don’t count toward my GPA, what’s the point?

@edch5908: If you don’t need the art class for IGETC, there isn’t much of a reason to retake it. If you plan on going to grad school, it’ll help.

The point of taking classes in the spring is mainly to satisfy any remaining IGETC courses you have. UCSD doesn’t even require that you be a full time student (or even a part time student) for the spring. If you have no other classes to take, don’t bother. Some UCs require that you maintain your full time status, but not UCSD.
