Hi all!
Help!!! We are OOS and my son is dreaming about SDSU (it is terrific for his intended major - Parks, Recreation and Natural Resource Management!). This EI thing is very new to us. 2 main questions:
- Are first semester senior year grades included in calculation of CS GPA’s? (I think this will help my son)
- Do ONLY the number of classes in a to g requirements count in GPA…i.e. 1 year of fine arts is required. If you did fine arts all 4 years, would only 2 semesters count in this GPA or would 4 (or 5) semesters count - i.e. 2 from Sophomore, 2 from Junior and ?1 from Senior??
Taking a big guess (my kiddo is a Junior now), his EI will likely be only about 4000, not 4100. Does that mean look elsewhere promptly or for some majors do folks with lower EIs get in?
Do they ever look at other things related to a students major (ie. significant ECs/work/research)? Or review an application more holistically? Or is it EI only?
Thank you!!!
CSU GPA only includes a-g courses from 10-11th grades. Senior grades are not included in the GPA calculation.
There is no limit on the a-g courses used in the GPA calculation, but you need to have the minimum from each area:

I like to use the Roger Hub UC GPA calculator which is the same as the CSU GPA calculator. See link:

As an OOS student, only AP/IB or DE courses will be used for the extra honors points in the calculation and again only for these courses taken in 10-11th grade.
No holistic review for the Cal States. It is all about numbers and major. An EI of 4100 for SDSU is competitive for the majority of the majors. Much will depend upon each years in-coming Freshman class and the EI can fluctuate for each major.
Competitive majors for SDSU are Nursing, Engineering, CS, Biology, Psychology and Business. The Recreation Administration major is not a popular and less competitive major so the EI should be lower. I would also have him look at Cal Poly SLO’s Recreation Administration major. SLO has a higher acceptance rate than SDSU due to more spots available.

If your son does not get an acceptance, he can appeal the decision but if he wants a more “holisitic review” of his application, then he applied to the wrong school. I think he has a good chance.
Thanks so much for the info. We are here in San Diego right now and he went on a tour Friday. He LOVED it! Fingers crossed!!
Yes, SDSU always leaves that impression.
Good luck. It is a good major for students who really want to work in that field.
