THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE WHO HELPED!!
MY family wants me to attend a college nearby (preferably NJ) LOL. I really want to go out of state for Med School. Hopefully my aid is decent to Rutgers or TCNJ.
You should get pretty good aid to rutgers, especially if you can get into the honors college (pm me if you have questions). I am out of state, so my situation is a bit different, but many in state people at the honors college pay nothing to go to rutgers (or pretty close to it). I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Don’t forget you could always become and RA after freshman year to eliminate your housing and meal plan costs.
No one should count on getting an RA job. They are highly competitive positions.
NJ colleges are going to be expensive, so I hope you applied everywhere you could. If the choices are paying 30K and keeping you in NJ, and paying 15K in Alabama, for instance, your family may well change their minds. Of course things could go your way and you may get excellent merit aid at either Rutgers or TCNJ.
Hello! I only got the scarlet scholarship $3500 for SAS Rutgers which I thought was pretty low… But i got into the honors programs for SAS and SEBS (no scholarship money offered at this school).
Will I get more money through the honors program??
@MYOS1634 Idk we talked about it and we’re pretty much looking at nearby schools now… I could take a couple of loans out if anything
You can take $5,500 in loans. The rest would be on your parents. :s
Don’t have them take loans just because they want you nearby. When you’re all grown up and they can’t retire, it’ll be little comfort to them that you were 3 hours away and came back freshman year for Spring break.
Look into SUNYs. I think New Paltz still has scholarships - that’s not too far. Look into West Chester U.
Hey!! Just wanted to update u guys LOL I recently got into Rowan University with a 13k scholarship. Since I am instate, this is the cheapest option for me as of right now. So I have Rutgers Honors with a 3500 scholarship and Rowan.
Hopefully Temple will come in clutch!
@Upenngirl98 congrats on your acceptance to Rowan, so glad you applied
@Upenngirl98 congrats! So glad to hear. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you with temple. But congrats on Rowan. It’s always nice to have a few options.
Thanks Guys!
LOL heard back from TCNJ yesterday…they offered $5000 in merit aid (which is better than rutgers lol idgi). Still Rowan beats everyone in terms of money.
Once you have all offers on the table compare not just for cost (as long as it’s affordable) but also for value - cheapest may or may not be the best value. Obviously anything too expensive for your parents ’ budget is off the table but hopefully you have choices.
Is tcnj affordable ?
Have you visited Rowan, organized a MN honors tour, sitting in on classes, meeting students ?
Is the Rowan scholarship 13K per year=full tuition? or total?
Yeah in terms of affordability I can go to TCNJ. And yes the Rowan Scholarship is 13K yearly so 52K for undergrad.
I am going to visit both schools soon on the accepted students day (its around April).
I got into both schools as a Biology Major so I’ll make a decision based on the best fit for me as well:)
Rowan tuition and fees is just under 13K this year, and room and board are approx.12K. Keep in mind when evaluating the finances that costs will rise over 4 years. College Navigator shows increases of approx. 2% per year over the last 4 years: https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=rowan+university&s=all&id=184782#expenses
With your $5500 federal loan, part time/summer earnings, and what is hopefully a manageable parent contribution, Rowan seems like a good choice. @Upenngirl98 , as I posted earlier, we have a family friend who is a Bio professor at Rowan, who has a beautiful research lab, and she thinks very highly of her students. Rowan is an under rated, hidden gem NJ school which is often overshadowed by bigger name publics in NJ. As recommended by many, it is wise to minimize undergrad costs if you plan to attend medical school.
Contact honors to see if you can sit in on one of their classes, meet students…
@mamag2855 I am going to visit the campus on the 19th! I also applied to the honors program! I’ve researched it as well and I can’t wait to visit! Although the possibility of TCNJ still persists, I think I am going to end up at Rowan University
@MYOS1634 Yep! I did that a while back for Rowan. I scheduled a visit on March 19th!
Just go and take notes, do as many things as you can on each campus - eat in the caferia, sit in on a class in your future major as well as on a gen ed class, read the campus paper, talk with students and professors, visit the honors dorm, ask about llc 's, research opportunities, etc.
Ask what students so on a Wednesday night (“party” = bad news), what’s available and college-aged sponsored on Friday and Saturday night that weekend (you may not like everything but it’s better if you find at least one thing that appeals to you! In addition, it tells you how alive and animated weekends are.)
