Help with Bio/Chem!!!

So if i got a 5 on AP Chem and a 4 on AP Bio and i am majoring in Biochemistry what do you veterans recomend??? To start from Chem 101 and Bio 101? Or take the credit and go to Chem 102 and Bio 102 (keeping in mind that i still have to take Phys 116 and 117 for my major)????

Any advice would be appreciated because at this point i have no idea what my first year schedule is going to even look like?

Take your credit

Take the credit. Getting a 4 and 5 means you are qualified enough to be fine. I haven’t heard of anyone placing out that has had anymore trouble than others in their classes.

perfect!!! thank you for the advice…now…should i do chem 102 first semester and bio 102 the secoond semester or both of them on the same one? Also, I have to take Phys 116 and Phys 117 for a biochemistry major so should i do phys 116 second semester of freshman year and phys 117 the first semester of sophomore year?

If you are going to do Bio-chem, you should probably take as many sciences as you can at the same time. It’s a pretty demanding major to say the least. So both bio and chem first semester, and go from there.

Take Chem 102H instead of Chem 241/261. I hear AP Chem doesn’t prepare as you well for analytical or orgo at Carolina, but 102H is geared toward people who have AP credit for 101 and 102 and it’s basically just 101 and 102 rolled into one semester. There’s also a placement test that you can take the first weekend you are there to see where you are. If they place you into 241, then go ahead and take 241. Otherwise, you’d probably be best off taking 102H.

About bio…take whatever you want. I got a 5 on my AP Bio exam and pulled a B in Bio 252 this semester. Mostly because I had to sort of re-figure out some stuff about my study habits (stuff I actually already knew, but tried to shortcut). I ended up making A’s in the course toward the end, so I imagine it can be done. My roommate had a 5 in AP Bio and did just fine in Bio 202 fall semester. I hear Bio 101 is just really annoying.

Try to take a FYS if you can.

thank you so much! and yes…i really want to take an FYS…there is one about genetics which im highly interested in!!!

Also…im not in the honors program so how can i take 102H instead of 102??? and should i take both physics freshman year or take on physics second semester of freshman year and the other physics the first semester of sophomore year??

If you are not in the Honors program, it will be hard for you to get into that class. What you will have to do is e-mail the teacher of the class and talk to them to let you in. Being a bio-chem major will help you a little bit, because they and Chem majors get some preference.

As far as physics goes, I don’t think that it really matters when you take it. I can’t think of any bio-chem classes off the top of my head that have physics as a pre-req. Just don’t take more than two classes with labs freshman year.
