Help

So I am deciding on colleges and BU is a place that I am considering, but the only real way I would ever be able to afford it is if I commute (i can only do it second semester freshman year and on). Would any of you advise this?

I would be going to the BME program as well, so would you say it would be worth it to be paying all that money just for this? (there is a more detailed version of my problem http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/698900-yet-another-plee-help.html).

Depends on where you’re commuting from. If it’s an hour and a half away. If it’s 20 minutes away.

By T I think it would be around a 20-30min max train ride…

That’s doable by my standards. I commute about a hour each day to get to school (high school, that is). Then, there is the hour-long bus ride back.

20-30 mins by T is not a problem. But to be clear, we’re talking about subway / trolley not commuter rail and then to the subway, because commuter rail has fixed schedules that limit your travel opportunities. You may get screwed a few times when the T has a problem but that’s something every commuter everywhere faces.

Yea its by T (the subway), I will be living near one that is close to central square and connected to the green line(passing by i saw that the green line was the one connected to Boston University, though there are two exit points according to my map).

I am just worried most that this will take away from my experience with talking and meeting people (which is why freshmen are supposed to room in BU for the first year). I would still really like to know how much this would take away from my college experience… If any commuters from BU are there, I would really like some input since this one part is essential to my college decision, which I will make tomorrow.

Thank you anyone who kind responds =)

I plan to commute, in a way. Since I live about three miles away from campus, I plan to get a dorm and dine at BU. However, I will return home to take my bath and sleep at my own residence in the evening.

And this is doable because they have given me $50,000 in grants. How generous of BU!

Damn XX55XX - I barely got half that amount =( at best around $23,000 sob Though you probably got a lot of cash cause you are from boston…

Anyways if anyone who goes to school at BU, or even just an adult who commuted, I would appreciate any help at all if you can say anything about the effects on my college experience…

Yeah. Apparently, giving a ton of grant money to Boston Public Schools students was their way of “giving back to the community”. They even waived the admission fee when we all applied.

I have a few friends who commute, and while you may have to make more of an effort to make friends, it can definitely be done. Look into clubs and activities right away, and maybe get a meal plan too. Then you can at least eat in the dining hall in between classes with friends you make. You may also look into getting a job on campus. Basically you’ll probably want to stay on campus for most of the day so you don’t have to keep going back and forth, so if you find friends who have similar schedules, you can go hang out with them in the student union or in their dorms.

hahahaha xx55xx, your roommate is gonna love you. you can definitely still make friends as a commuter, very easily in fact if you are outgoing and will put yourself out there while you’re on campus. you have a full semester also to make friends before you start commuting.

OK I think thats enough information TY VERY MUCH, especially BUBailey. Hopefully I can be more sociable in college than I have in High School - though its going to be really hard adjusting to a new environment and having to make friends in 6 months =/.

The arguments I have seen against commuting is not growing up and relying too much on mom/dad to do your chores. Since I will be with my brother really, I don’t see that there will be too much difficulty since I will be in a new environment anyways. Also I have seen that commuters do worse because of the lack of attachment to the school, hopefully i can overcome this.

Also I lied Central Square is a red line T and I will need to change to the green line(still not too bad of a commute)

Dude, if it’s Central Square, you can take the 47 bus directly to BU. Goes over the BU Bridge. Go to mbta.com, to the bus schedules, look at the 47 and then open the map for that. It’s like 10 minutes to school.
