Herbert Presidential Scholars?

Hi, I've been admitted to IUB and plan on going there next year for poli sci. I was wondering if anyone had any info. on the Herbert Presidential Scholarship - like when nominees are announced, how many are selected, what the application process is like...etc

I read on the scholarship website that nominees are announced in mid-Feb, but if anyone has any specific info or experiences, that would be very helpful!!

BTW: i've already been awarded the IU Excellence, first-year scholars award, national merit finalist award, and Balfour scholarships from IU; GPA:3.98, SAT: 2240/2400

I’m in the same situation you are…just waiting to hear back. It would be great to know when those announcements are made.

I’m a Kelley direct admit, received the IU Excellence, assuming I’ll receive the nat’l merit finalist award, and waiting to hear back from other scholarships. 2250 SAT 3.94 UW GPA.

Just out of curiosity, what is the first-year scholars award?

Edited to add this. It tells a LOT:

My D is similar to both of you, and we’re waiting too (with fingers and toes crossed!). It’s announced later in February. You can google IU Presidential Scholarship (try with and without Herbert because it didn’t have that name when it first started), and you can find several press release things that tell how many are awarded. Adding “National Merit” brings up the releases that say that they give preference to National Merit. They tell how many there are each of the past years, photos of dinners, lists of recipients, etc.
It’s quite a lot, and has increased every year. There is something that says a maximum of … 30? 40? per year. But it’s been very successful in keeping good kids instate and now it’s over 60. I ran the numbers in my head, how many Natial Merit kids there are in Indiana, divided them in two (PU/IU), thought how many would still accept elite schools…and it looked to me like most National Merit kids MIGHT get them. Of course - who knows!!!

Hooier05: I don’t THINK it’s “nominees” in late Feb - I’m fairly certain it’s the final award. But this is just from my memory. I’m too lazy to go google before finishing this post. Where did you hear “nominee” in February?

Run002: First Year Scholars (I think) is like Kelly direct admit (with scholarship). My D was a direct admit to CAS, and she got the first year scholars too, so I assume that’s what OP got. D disn’t get Balfour, but she got a Hutton scholarship.

So…time to be on pins and needles for this one. I’m sure it would put all over you over the top into Free Ride land - and my D is already chomping at the bit for that laptop. I hope you ALL get it!!! Best luck!

Run 002, the first-year scholars award is for in-state students and is 4,000(1000/yr. renewable). I think all in state direct admits for the college of arts and sciences get it. (info here: [College of Arts and Sciences: Undergraduates: Scholarships and Awards](http://www.indiana.edu/~college/undergrad/scholarships/cri_ISA.shtml) )

Most of the info i have now about the presidential scholarship i got from IU’s website ( [Herbert Presidential Scholars: Indiana University](http://www.indiana.edu/~hscholar/) ). It talks about nominees being announced in mid-feb., but it doesn’t say anything about anything else in the selection process, so maybe these “nominees” are actually the recipients.

If anyone gets anything in the mail about it this month, let us know! I would really appreciate it!

Also, I’ve been wondering about this: does anyone know how it works at IU if you earn more scholarships than what your total cost is? Does the school give you that leftover money, or just award you up to a certain amount?

R124687, my daughter applied for the Hutton scholarship and has not heard anything yet. Do you mind telling me when your D heard that she had received it?

2014mother - My son received notification in the mail last Friday relative to the Huttons scholarship he was offered.

2014mother…there wasn’t any “direct” application really - it was just one of the things included in the process of filing the blanket SSA form…I assume you meant she filled that out?

I looked it up and my D learned of the Hutton scholarship by snail mail, received Thu 1/28. I know nothing about the criteria or their process… if they go out all at once or in some sort of order or in “bunches”, or …? I THINK they range from $1000-$4000 per year.

I also received notification of my Hutton scholarship (Balfor 5000/yr.) last friday 1/29 in the mail. What were the other ones some of you received?

Anyone received any other selective ones?

thanks, R124687 and hoosier05151992. That makes more sense now.

Also, it seems like most of the nat’l merit finalists at IU end up receiving a full ride of some sort, whether it be the Wells or Presidential + automatic. I believe there are 20 something Wells and around 50-60 presidential scholars, and there were 82 nat’l merit scholars at IU last year. Link:

Everyone seems to be talking about Hutton scholarships. I haven’t heard anything back from Hutton about scholarships, although I have heard back from Kelley (re: Kelley Scholars).

I’m hoping that they come out in batches, as I haven’t received anything in the mail. Any info would be great. Thanks again.

Thanks to everyone that posted replies about the Hutton scholarship notifications.

nothing from hutton here yet.

parent56–Don’t sweat it yet. My D didn’t receive her notification of the Hutton Honors Scholarship until the last week of Feb/first week of March.

Is the Herbert Presidential Scholarship a full ride?

No, Herbert’s not a full ride, but it’s described at their website. Various documents give a range of numbers. It’s offered at several campuses, and the dollar amount varies. The Lilly corp offers a set amount, and the campus matches it 2 for 1. I forget the starting point, but it seems to be “up to” $12,000. But it includes $1000 in Jr year for international travl (air ticket spending money, whatever?), plus a laptop. In one if a recipient of this scholarship though, their stats will probably mean they are lucky enough to receive some/several other, smaller scholarships…so it CAN end up being a full ride (or close) once everything is totaled.

Has still no one heard anything at all about the Herbert scholarship?? I’m just still a little confused about the whole process and am anxiously awaiting any word from IU…

It’s really not supposed to be until the end of February.
Congrats on NMF too, “Hoosier”.

Thanks R! :)

I got my letter for the Herbert presidential scholarship in the mail today. The letter says I’ve been “offered this very prestigious award”. I think that means I got it for sure because the letter later states “In approximately two weeks, you will receive a letter from Provost Karen Hanson outlining the details and conditions of the award”. Does anyone already know how much this scholarship is worth for IU-Bloomington? Will I need to supplement it with other awards?

I got a letter today, too, Gino!!

This article says that the scholarship is worth 6000-12,000 per year-in addition to the laptop and travel stipend.

Congrats to u both! My son received the same letter as well and we are very proud and happy.
