I just received an email inviting me to apply for this. Has anyone else been invited? Any idea how many nominees there are?

I don’t know- I wasn’t invited to apply- but my friend did the hesburgh-yusko application when she was applying ea (apparently high schools can nominate you to apply by november 1st), so they’ll be some people who applied then too

I’d just call ND if you want to know how many people. since it’s the first year of the program we can’t look to how many people applied last year, so the only way would be to ask the college

I’m wondering, too. I really had next to no leadership positions, which seems to be what they’re looking for, so I’m wondering if I have a realistic chance…or if being nominated signifies anything?

If you were emailed to apply, that means that one of the admissions counselors recommended you after reading your application. Also, every high school had two students that could be recommended. It is unknown how many applied, but there will be 100 semi-finalists and only 20 scholarships given.

(I applied, and am hoping for the best!)

I think you are only invited for these scholar programs if they received your financial aid information…

I have a question though~ If we do not apply fo any scholar program or financial aid packages in our freshman year, we can still do so later right?

^I didn’t apply for FA, so they dont have any information from me

Me neither. It’s a merit scholarship, so I don’t think FA info matters.

Ohh okay that’s cool haha

When my daughter and I visited Notre Dame last summer they said that 25 of these scholarships would be awarded. Every little bit helps.

This is the first year The Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program is selecting students. Two groups of students were eligible to apply to the Program: students nominated by designated nominating high schools and students referred by ND Admissions. Nominated students from designated high schools applied to the Program in November; students who were admitted to Notre Dame in Early Action and were referred to the Program by Admissions were invited to apply to the Program in December.

They will choose 100 semi-finalists to interview by phone. From that group of semi-finalists, they will select 50 finalists to attend a Finalists’ Weekend at Notre Dame. 20 students will be named Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars after the Finalists’ Weekend.

The Program is completely merit-based, and financial need isn’t considered at any time during the selection process. They are looking for students who meet these criteria: demonstrated leadership abilities, academic accomplishment, commitment to service, and moral character. You can find more information here: [The Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program](http://www.hesburgh-yusko.org)

When do we find out if we are semi-finalists?

Reading the description it seems like they want someone who will contribute back to the Church. Did anyone not Catholic get asked to apply? Just wondering, thanks guys : )

@ClaroQSi: All applicants will be notified of their status between the end of January and the beginning of February. Those who are designated as semi-finalists will then be invited to participate in a phone interview in February.

We are not Catholic, and my daughter didn’t get nominated for this. Her school had no information on it - public school nw suburbs of Chicago. We were really hoping she would get a nomination from an admissions counselor. ND is such a stretch for us financially.

My guess would be that being Catholic could only help you. However, I think that if a student demonstrated a true commitment to /secular/ ethics and service, they would also be considered. Don’t act like that’s an oxymoron–I’ve been closely involved with an ethics program at my school that focuses exclusively on secular ethics, and the majority of my service activities have been outside the Church (mostly because I live away from home and transportation to there is hard to get at times)… I wasn’t invited by an admissions counselor, but I was nominated by my own school, and feel like I have a pretty good chance. I don’t think anyone who is not Catholic should feel that they can’t possibly be invited/participate in this program, but it might be that it’s a little bit of a leg up.

Doesn’t look like this has anything to do with being Catholic. We are not even Christian, much less Catholic, and D got invited to apply (email from Admissions). Also this has nothing to do with Financial Aid. We haven’t filed FA forms (FAFSA or CSS-Profile) yet (not that D will get much), but still got invited to apply.

Anyone hear anything yet? The timeline says you get notified the week of Jan 25th. Anyone know how we get notified? It’s Thursday, and I haven’t heard anything yet. Good luck to everyone!!

I think you had to apply and be accepted early action to be considered.

The website now says in the timeline “Early February 100 Hesburgh-Yusko semi-finalists selected”.
