Can anyone give me some info on this. I was under the impression that the deadline for this scholarship was December 15th. However, I was just looking at the info on the ND website and it states that the deadline is January 13th for Early Action Referrals. What is that all about? It states to complete the application and submit two letters of rec however I can find the application on line either.

You either have to be nominated by your school, or ND needed to send an email regarding the scholarship so that they could send you an application. Sadly, it’s not a scholarship open to all students.

Schools are allowed to nominate one student for the HY. Tough when there are multiple qualified students. You cannot apply on your own even if you might be more qualified than the students nominated at your school or at other schools. At least merit aid is beginning to make inroads at ND.

Earlier this year HY decided to allow all high schools to nominate a student and additionally for ND admissions to refer/invite students whose applications they thought suggested they would be strong contenders for the scholarship. I’m guessing they didn’t notify all the EA candidates in time for them to apply by the deadline, so they extended it to Jan. 13 for those invited by ND admissions (aka EA Referrals).

[The Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program](http://www.hesburgh-yusko.org/Application/default.aspx)

This is the website with the application. You’ll have to create an account and log in to view it.

But you cannot simply apply on your own. I contacted the HYS staff and was told that you must be nominated to be given access to the application. You can set up an account, but can’t get in to the actual application without the nomination. Have you been given different info? Do you think anything has changed?

Nothing has changed since October; you must be nominated by your high school OR have been invited (via email/letter) by ND admissions to apply for the scholarship. Although if there is a January 13 extended deadline it must only be for those who the admissions counselors decided to invite but didn’t notify in time to apply…

That still doesn’t give me enough time. I got the email a couple days ago, but there’s no way I can ask a teacher for recommendations with such short notice.

If you already have teacher recommendations, then all you have to do is ask them to submit it for this. The same applies for your counselor. And you might be surprised. I asked for some last minute things and they were surprisingly glad to help.

Yes I’m sure you can find teachers to do it on short notice. Don’t let that stop you from applying. Rec letters don’t take much time for most teachers, and many do them at the last minute anyways; asking with lots of time remaining is a simple courtesy but this time it’s not your fault if you don’t.
And I know for many such applications they prefer you to have your teachers submit by the deadline but give some leniency if they can’t or don’t.

Agreed. Teachers are people just like us. If you approach the situation correctly, they are usually very understanding. And they procrastinate just like we do haha.
