Lol Ferrari.

SFKid, did you, yourself, check that those classes you got F’s and D’s on aren’t UC transferable? DOUBLE check on assist.org, some counselors aren’t 100% reliable.

I did list my stats, prereq, and major in the other thread.
~3.8 GPA
Global Studies/Middle East Studies
pre-reqs - one IP. local community colleges don’t offer any others.
IGETC - done by spring
units by end of spring - ~61.

one english and final math IP. personal statements are solid so I thought. very concise and to the point. related to my history at CC including health issues that affected my performance in school.

i have 18+ units IP. i guess that’s a negative? math and english also IP, but I already have one english down (AP). my relatively high gpa, non-impacted major, and the fact that UCSB is the only school I applied to - something I pointed out in my first essay - would mean i had a decent chance of acceptance no? my counselors said so. then again my counselors enrolled me in non-transferable classes my first year.

im going to call them and see what’s up. but i am quite upset especially after seeing 3.3 applicants get in to competitive majors.

“so if you are taking 18 units now and yet you took 9 before or something totally different, that is bad.”

I wasn’t taking 9 units before. I was taking a full load with a 4.0 for fall.

one english and final math during spring IP is fine, I’m doing it right now, and i know many of my friends are doing that also. Just give them a call, make sure calm yourself down first and speak calmly lol. Anything that you are discussing right now is just help you build the confident, tomorrow is the real test, call bro. best of luck.

haha im pretty calm now. only three holes in my bedroom wall. probably need to buy a new stapler. :)

Do the 61 units include the courses that you got “F” with, or repeated courses? Further more, do those units include non-transferable courses?

Just curious, how many units of actual CC courses, not AP courses, did you have by Fall? And how many semesters have you actually been full time?

It sounds like you haven’t been in CC that long so they don’t have much of an academic record to draw on, especially when you have so many units left in Spring. You mention your 3.8 GPA, but a 3.8 holds a lot more weight with maybe 60 completed units by Fall than say if you have only 20 units and mostly AP credit filling in the rest.

Also if you’ve taken a W in a Math or English course already it looks bad to have to repeat a course in Spring before you transfer. A W in either the Math or English requirement and then trying to repeat it in Spring is almost an auto-rejection.

@moon
no, the F was a non-transfer math class (remedial) later replaced with a pass. The 61 units are transferable.

@dilapidate

good question. of actual completed transferable CC units, i have 29 transferable units. I have two As in non-transferable classes i took for high school credit. apparently they transfer to CSU but not UC.

add 10.5 for AP credit.

the thing is im not having a particularly challenging time completing my units. CC really isn’t that difficult. i just had a lot of RL issues going on in previous semesters that i couldn’t make the time to complete enough classes, plus factoring in my disability. i had a 3.95 in high school.

thoughts? any recommendations on what i should say when i speak with an admission’s rep? should i even bother?

if you dont mind me asking, if you have 29 transferable and 10.5 ap credits for a total of 39.5 units, are you taking 20.5 units this semester to get your 60 total? its a bit disconcerting to see a student with such a high gpa get rejected /:

I remember you mentioned that you are taking 18 units this semester, plus 29 transferable units that u already done and 10.5 units from AP. That only gives 57.5 units total. Did I left out anything?

more or less yes. i knew ahead of time i would be at a disadvantage because of my lack of units, but ive never failed a transferable class. ive always done well in school. i imagine UCSB is being assaulted with petitions and i dont want to be one of those students, but id like to know what turned officers off specifically.

@Sunnybanana they will grant “credits” but whether or not it fulfills a gen. ed. req I’m pretty sure this website is accurate…
[University of California - AP credits](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/ap-credits/index.html)

Sunny I remember you saying you got admitted somewhere, this is my huge dismay at the moment. I feel like I’m stuck here one more year because of an english class… Have you gotten in anywhere yet??

I honestly think that it was the fact that your transferable math and English weren’t completed by the end of Fall 2011. Many people were denied admission for the exact same thing last year, and UCSB told me last year (over the phone) that students who hadn’t completed their math or English coursework were given the least priority - either denied right off the bat or had their application held for further review.

Also, being under the 60 unit minimum by the end of Spring, or not being within a full courseload away from it (I’ve heard that if you need more than 18 units - the max courseload at most CCs - to get to 60, they usually don’t look favorably on that).

Hey bud, since your college didn’t offer any of the prerequisites did you at least take classes in those departments? It’s a sort of rule of thumb that if you can’t take the required courses, at least show interest in your major.

In any case, I think this could at least help the future applicants understand that it’s important to have a plan when it comes to your courses. You know, don’t save important core classes or major prerequisites until your last semester. A lot of the time, unforeseeable stuff gets in the way. That sucks, but I don’t think they consider that (how can they?) unless you bring it up in your application.

They’re the only ones who can tell you though. Should you bother calling? Hell yeah you should. No need to ask anything other than why they rejected you. I doubt you’ll be able to fix it on the phone anyway.

I’m in almost the same exact situation as you

gpa: 3.8~
major: sociology
igetc: finished by spring 2012, finishing the last 2, english and math
prereqs: finishing stats

im also using 3 AP classes towards the 60 unit requirement.

right now my decision is pending. no doubt it’s because of not finishing the prereqs and igetc.

@Salmos

the specificity of my major makes it difficult to take classes directly related to it. i took mostly political science/history classes. i believe only one pre-req for my major is available at the three closest community colleges and that is IP. the major only has like 5ish pre-reqs? global studies has a bit more, and many of those classes are not offered where i live. maybe online.

i explained everything in my application, very very explicit. though i was told UCSB doesn’t even look at personal statements, i still did them all plus the optional third.

i have a disability and that did explain some of the gaps but that info was located in my PS and essays.

@sea, good luck. i wish i was decision pending. i was rejected at 3:00 on the dot. first batch. :(

^
i think the tipping point were the F’s you got in the non transferable classes.

oh geez, this thread is making me paranoid. i have 2 classes that i took 8 years ago that i listed in my app that aren’t UC transferable. I just listed them anyways since they said i cannot disregard any college courses. they weren’t in system so i had to enter them manually. does that mean it won’t be calculated in my UC GPA?

do you really believe this? i probably could have gotten an AR but i didn’t see the need since i replaced the F’s with PS.

@navymike

as far as i know, only courses listed on assist.org or specified by UC itself are transferable. also, classes transferable 8 years ago might not be transferable today. just my understanding. non-transferable courses shouldnt be factored into ur GPA.

well that’s the only real difference between my stats and your stats (besides major). it might also be the EC’s or maybe your reviewer was having a bad day, who knows. either way, give them a call you might have a chance. im not an expert or anything on the admission process so take my words with a grain of salt.
