High high school GPA, low college GPA

Hello! I am a freshmen at St. John's college at looking to transfer next year as a sophomore.
I am in a bit of an unusual situation in terms of my college GPA. St. John's is Great Books program so there all only 5 classes offered and all of them are required . Furthermore, all classes are all discussion so there are no papers or tests.

Since I am going to transfer next year I asked all my teacher if they could tell me my grades and they told me they didn't know and wouldn't decided until the semester is over. Then I started to get scared when I started asking some upperclassmen who said that general the teachers give all C's and might give a B to a really good student and an A is only for a truly exceptional student. The learning style here has also been very very unusual and has been very difficult for me to deal with.

Essentially I have no control over my grades and everything is up to the discretion of the teacher and I won't find out what my grades are until it too late.

So this makes me very very scared for what my 1st semester GPA will look like and how this will effect my chances at transferring (I am apply to top 20 LACs)

Besides my my college GPA, my high school GPA was 4.7 weighted in an advance honors curriculum. I had all 4s and 5s on AP tests and was involved in extracurriculars in high school and college.

So if any one has any guidence on this will affect my chances and ability to transfer or what I can do about it, that would be great!

The sem is over within the next month, and most transfer application deadlines are in about March. Wouldn’t it be best to wait and see what your grades are and then determine a realistic list of schools to apply to?
