High school class of 2016

^SAT Math includes Algebra II, which the PSATs also use, but it is toned down. Also, the SAT’s have bubble-in math questions, which the PSATs don’t

Really? That’s unfortunate. I guess I’ll study for both and take them both the beginning of Junior Year.

Next year, I’ll be eligible for the SAT II Math, at least I think I would be.

PSATs have bubble in math questions

Oh sorry, I apologize in that case.

However, do all schools offer the PLAN [Practice ACT]?

I don’t know if my school does.

What exactly was the purpose of creating the PSAT? Was it to prepare students for the SAT?

@Apollo11 Not all, because all would be impossible… most do.

^As a way to drain more money and get more profits for CollegeBoard and ETS.

Also, the PSAT is the National Merit Qualifying Exam, so it basically is the test needed to compete in the National Merit Scholarship Competition

@Apollo

Not all schools, but mine is making all sophomores take it next year.

@Meander
It is to have a different standardized test to give out National Merit Scholarships afaik. I’m not sure why they don’t just combine it with the SAT and/or ACT

Well I know that, but I don’t think the National Merit part was incorporated until later on in the PSAT’s purpose.

^It probably was, but that is what it is used for nowadays.

Nonetheless, it really is a way to make money, aside from their other products.

All companies need to turn a profit.

That is the purpose of a company. Anyone here have braces? I just got mine and I can’t talk properly. ._.

^Yeah…that’s my point.

CollegeBoard is basically using the PSAT as a way to generate extra cash, but I suppose that is the clear picture.

What are you trying to get at?

What the original purpose was.

EDIT: It was just for a preparation for the SAT.

^What does that even mean, Meander?

Anyway, fellow 16’ers, what are your thoughts on becoming sophomores? How will you treat the new freshman?

I’ve already said I was wondering why the PSAT was created.

Oh, okay. I guess it was to give people a way to practice for the SAT’s and because enough people at CollegeBoard decided it would turn a profit.

Yeah, sadly.

Well, it isn’t all bad. It does let anxious kids like us find what we need to work on for the SAT’s as well as it gives a small minority a $2,000 scholarship or more [I know USC does automatic half tuition for its NMF’s]

Sophomore year is gonna be pretty kickass for me. I’m gonna have a bunch of courses with a lot of cool girls, and currently I’m single so… :slight_smile: haha but also I have a lot of classes with chill upperclassmen who I know from sports and gym classes. I will also be playing varsity football again and should be starting at least offense, maybe also defense :smiley: and I’m gonna have a bunch of rigorous courses to keep me busy! I also won’t have to be a freshman anymore which is just wonderful!

^Sounds great! Also, way to do sports! I used to play soccer with Everton’s youth academy but am out for my career basically. Anyway, I also have been ‘taken in’ by the upperclassman, so I can’t wait to rule the school and look with disdain at the new freshman!

I’m terrified for my classes! I’m so afraid of doing badly in AP Euro/Honors Geometry. I’m trying to study over the summer but it doesn’t seem like it’s helping much. D:
