High school seniors 2011- who else has gotten in?

^^^^

Congrats!!! Roll Tide!!!

What’s her major?

Congrats Rose’s D :)

D’s ACT score gave her the bump up in scholarship that she wanted!!! Haven’t pulled the trigger on the deposit yet.

Rose808 and gamomof3, congratulations to your DDs!

Thanks! She’s planning on Computer Science, so with the engineering supplement, as you know, that’s full tuition! If not, I’d make her actually study and take it again :)

Awesome…

Full tuition PLUS $2500 per year! Amazing! Congrats!

I think I need to have my D reconsider her major. Sounds like she needs an engineering major.

What happens if you declare an engineering major but change your mind after a semester? I am assuming you only get the scholarship for that semester.

In a previous posting, M2CK said that she thought a student would lose the rest of the engineering scholarship if he/she changed his/her mind and did not pursue engineering. That’s why I would wait until after my freshman year to make such a decision. Sometimes, a kid needs a full year in classes before deciding what he or she wants to do. My son went to Alabama as a chem/econ major. He now is a math/econ/poli sci major.

Hoʻomaikaʻi ʻana, ʻōlelo hoʻomaikaʻi!

Aloha and Roll Tide!!

Congrats!!

*In a previous posting, M2CK said that she thought a student would lose the rest of the engineering scholarship if he/she changed his/her mind and did not pursue engineering. *

Yes…if a child has an ACT 30 or 31 and enters as an Eng’g or Comp Sci major, then they get the upgrade scholarship to full tuition plus the $2500 per year.

If the student changes his/her major at some point to something that is not within engineering or comp sci, they lose that upgrade and the $2500 (they keep the 2/3 tuition scholarship). It is totally ok for a Elec Engineering major to change to Comp Sci (or some other COE program) …the student wouldn’t lose the upgrade because the change is still within the CoE.

Unless my child was doing poorly in his Eng’g or comp sci major and couldn’t change to a “lighter” program within CoE that he would like, I would encourage my child to finish within the CoE to get the better scholarship.

Of course, students still have until Oct ACT and SAT and Nov SAT (not ACT for Nov) to get a high enough score not to worry about the upgrade.

If I had a child who was “close,” I would sign him up for the Nov SAT and have him only study the Math and CR sections because those are the only ones that count for scholarships.

Work-study has nothing to do with scholarships. W-S comes from Financial Aid dept and student has to have “need”. Probably those who submit FAFSA early and have need have the best chance to get W-S.

Mahalo nui loa, malanai! Gee, there may be enough Hawaii kids at Bama next year to start up a Hawaii club :)

D is actually signed up to take the next SAT and ACT. I wasn’t taking any chances. I figured if I didn’t sign her up, she’d miss it by one. Not sure if I can actually get her to take them now, though. She’s just going to have to stick with CS!! We may have to have that discussion at dinner.

Rose808: You may want to tell your daughter the consequences if she decides CS is not for her. You would hate it if you had to tell her after a year of loving Alabama that she could not return because a change in major means a change in finances.

my ACT score went up… to a 29. I can’t believe I missed it by one point! Very frustrating, but I will be taking it in October and hoping for a happier result. If only math and science weren’t necessary, the world would be a better place.

Mavs2011: My sons (particularly the youngest) have the opposite reaction – if only English and reading were not so important.

D’s best friend also got a 29 and will be retaking too. Good luck!! Study hard! There’s some good tips in the ACT section of this forum.

Mavs…

Take the November SAT. No Science Reasoning. If the SR section is bringing your average down, then the SAT may be your better test.

I think it’s easier to get a 1330 on the M+CR than it is to get an ACT 30. Plus, you only have to study for those sections in a practice book.

I got my acceptance letter a week ago and I’ve chosen to go to U of Alabama.

S doesn’t like math, science yes, but not math. He has signed up for the Math SAT2, as he was told he needed another SAT2 besides Eng. But after this weekend we shall see if he still is hedging his bets and elects to take it.
Congrats Soccergirl. Are you going to play soccer? My D played D-1, I think we had more fun that she did though. It’s a lot of work.

I’m thinking about playing intramural soccer and might try-out as a walk-on in the spring.
