Ummm. if I were to compare Qatar and Hong Kong ----> Hong Kong by ten miles… (well I mean HKU :P) Good luck! Are you doing the IB? Because 38+ points for IB is automatically eligible for scholarship for first year tuition in UST.

I think it is not right to compare and be too critical about who is the better one. It doesnt matter if HKU or HKUST is the best school in HK. Be it engineering or business related courses. You can say HKU is better for business but I can tell you HKUSTs MBA is the thing.
Who do you listen to? There is no end to this.

Choose the university you have a heart to go to. See the campus. Talk to your countryman who are there. Its the experience that counts. Not whether everyone beside you is smart.
I will never need everyone around me to be smartasses who are by what you say intelectual. That is wrong.

I prefer good people , friendly , life as an undergraduate student. You guys put too much emphasis on which is no.1 which is no.2 so i should go there when in fact the difference is actually a gray area that no one can really access. Even the rankings by TIMES is not accurate.

Dont forget the little comments you guys make will result in ppl like Donutz to take a stepback and doubt when he got a real good offer from HKUST just because they hear you saying “oh HKU is better”
Mind you HKUST is not far behind either.

If you get an offer for engineering/business from HKU or HKUST. Do not make your decision based on who is no.1 who is no.2 here because both are good in any field you apply.

At the end of the day, its all about you when you graduate and develop your own career path , not about " I came from the no.1 engineering school / no.1 business school from HK".

^ I definitely agree with the points as you have stated. But I guess the purpose of this thread is so that everyone can put their views in - since everyone has a different take on universities. Perhaps donutz only had HKUST in his mind all the time, and while the others who suggest HKU may be a better alternative will open his options and really allow him to compare - be it individual research or through other ways.

I am confident that almost every individual is best at making decisions for themselves because everyone has different expectations. - and I am convinced donutz will not be ‘blurred’ but instead see the wider picture. For example, I think ysbera learnt something more about all these (my speculation - correct me if I am wrong)

Just as you say “I will never need everyone around me to be smartasses who are by what you say intellectual. That is wrong.” - it depends on what each is looking for. I generally like a ‘smart’ atmosphere which does not go into the ‘nerd’ category - because it motivates myself to work harder.

So to all who are reading this thread - make sure your final decision is what you WANT. If I sound like preaching at any point, I sincerely apologise as my intention is to share my view and my passion - and I hope at least some people will find my comments useful.

@dqbonafide: To your last post which I don’t think anyone answered, there is quite a gap between Polytech’s and HKU/CUHK/HKUST 's reputation. Also in terms of academic and international reputation it is also comparatively lower.

No hard feelings there mate :D,
All this comparison happens in every country even in singapore between NUS & NTU. Just grew bored of these rivalries.

I thought maybe we can discuss why it is better rather than saying “it is better” you know because all the rankings & proclaimed status as the top / 2nd top is not a good ground to make a decision on. But lets say everyone says HKU is better in business, HKUST is better in engineering. So why? Why is it the better one? Thats the important feedback that we need.

@ TheGrand : Thanks for your answer … Oh well I applied anyway just incase…

Hm. are you a Singaporean? Well I thought NUS is overall ‘better’ than NTU (notice i quoted the word better haha) But I do hear from graduates that the curriculum is too tightly packed and less practical than that of its peers. Well the Singapore government will probably make sure the ‘National’ university stays in the top in Singapore anyway :P

And yea I agree to the point “So why? Why is it the better one? Thats the important feedback that we need.” :)

@ TheGrand: Yeah I guess you’re right. Unfortunately, its A Levels for me, so not so sure…the interviewers did tell me about scholarships for us intl’s, but I have to wait ! All on the finances!

@theGrand- Hahaha, i still check this thread daily too, always read all the latest posts. =p

and to dqbonafide- haha, sometimes we all forget a name is just a name…good idea to change discussion onto what is actually better and more academically stimulating than what people think, though sometimes the perceived thoughts of the general public infiltrate employers too =/ do you know where you’ll be attending? =D

@michelleger: I will most likely be seeing you next year in HKU I got my conditional offer - which is admittedly a bit high… but we’ll see You are pretty much set on it right?

@TheGrand,

Hey so for HKU the decisions are supposedly coming out this week? Do you get an email or do you just log on and check?

^^wondering the same…

Basically, I requested to know my decision earlier as I have to respond to other colleges in the World - hence within a few days, they gave me an email saying I am offered a place at HKU.

If you will be getting an offer, they will be asking you to submit a certified copy of your HKCEE/IGCSE equivalent certificates by a certain deadline- that would signify that you are admitted - because in HKU’s application form it says something along the lines of “exchange of the certified copies… for an offer” - That happened to me.

After that deadline, your portal should be updated saying you have an conditional offer - that hasn’t happened to me yet, again because I have requested to know early. I am speculating the Bus and Econs department will release results this Thursday or Friday because for me - the deadline to submit my certified documents is this Wednesday.

**My guess is that since you will be given one week to submit your certified documents (and only then they will give you an offer) - so ideally you should know if you are admitted earlier.

Wow, I haven’t been on this thread for a while now haha

anyways, I’m going to HKUST next fall! I got rejected from all my choices at HKU which was a bit depressing…only if I knew that the courses I applied for were one of the hardest to get into haha! well I guess I didn’t really mind the rejection because I said I would attend HKUST before I found out =] now I just need to meet my conditional offer…so I should go study for the IB exams now I guess…haha

I think if you guys are deciding on whether to choose HKU or HKUST, you guys should definitely ask current students there for some information. I asked a friend at HKU and someone at HKUST, and I ended up liking HKUST more from what I heard so I’m hoping that I made the right choice =]
I had doubts about HKUST because when I first visited, it wasn’t really the atmosphere I expected but someone replied to that (I forgot who…sorry!) and I decided to see a bigger picture and right now I’m actually pretty excited about going! Anyways, I’m just blabbing now, wish the rest of you guys luck !!

@merrypips: What courses did you apply to each university? Which course are you intending to enroll to and whats the condition like?
Good luck with the IB exams, it officially starts in 9 days.
trembles

Oh cool…

I don’t have any documents to submit haha… I haven’t taken GCSE or equivalent courses… I am really interested to know if I got into HKU or not but I am going for the Dual Degree but **** 40 points in IB…

Wait don’t go telling lies haha. IB starts in 13 days. Mine starts in May 4th. Is yours different???

@merrypips: What programs did you apply for HKU?

Really doesn’t matter whether it is HKU or UST. UST is especially good if you are doing engineering, science and business. Are you getting an offer for BBA in UST?

merrypips,

Make sure you don’t get fat because the food at HKUST is pretty good (a lot better than what I can get in the US with the same price). I was there for summer research; they even had DIM SUM, and the milk tea cost 1 HK dollar (must be some kind of summer special)! ;)

@ysbera: My school is quite a known and big IB school so we offer many more subjects. So for us (which is anyway the official IB exam period stated by the IBO), the IB exam officially starts on 30th of April and ends on the 22nd of May.

…and yes… 40 points in IB - ■■■

@merrypips: (It was me) We may see each other in UST next fall! If i make it to score 4 or above on my AP courses… Wondering how hard it is to get 4 or above on ap physics b because this year is the first year iv learnt physics

@thegrand- awesome! good luck on your IB’s, i have no idea what that is, er well sort of but i dont know what it entails or anything, but it sounds difficult! =P I’m sure you’ll do fine. once all these acceptances are out we’ll have to organize our mass CC meetings in HKU or UST, LOL, and compare classes…although their class system is unfamiliar to me, apparently there is a phase of a couple weeks where students create their schedule themselves…
