Haha a CC meeting sounds awesome. I can take you guys for a tour around HK if you want

Are any of you guys worrying about the salary issue though? The median salary for HKU is around $18,000 HKD a month, which is quite low in US standard.

yeah not much tax.
But I think even counting that, its still not as much.
Sorry if I am playing devilās advocate here.
I love HKU and UST as much as everyone here :)

SDG1,
18,000 HKD/month translates to about $40K a year in the US once you take tax into consideration. Thatās not even considering other extra savings (relative to what you have to pay in the US). For example, when you eat out, you donāt really need to pay tips either. When you go to American restaurants, you pay 15 dollars for a 10-dollar meal after tax and bull***** called ātipsā!! A 15 dollar meal balloons to 23 dollars (I just paid that yesterday; I am still not used to this BS after all these years here). In Hong Kong, a 10-dollar meal costs you 10 dollars.

You also donāt pay health insurance (actually not sure about you but locals donāt)!!!

Also, if you have capital gains from stocks or real estates, thereās no tax! Thatās huge!

Speaking of dinning out, you can easily get awesome meals under 5 bucks; 5 bucks only get you McDonalds in the US.

@michelleger: definitely! that would be so cool haha meeting a bunch of āvirtualā people with awkward āusernamesā in real life. haha!

I was just looking back at last yearās statistics for IB. 40 points and above is equivalent to the top 6% in the world. T_______T ā ā ā .

I agree with Sam Leeās point. The standard of living differs very greatly (having lived both at both places for a certain period). I am positive the salary is approximately the same if you adjust it for standard of living, taxes etc. Of course, if you donāt adjust it, the US median salary will certainly look much higher.

Also, for those who are waiting for offers from HKU - I just wanted to tell you guys my online portal has been updated today this morning - which now says āConditional offer (subject to confirmation by formal offer letter from the Faculty concerned)ā Hope that helps.

@thegrand : Nop I am a Malaysian. In the case of NUS & NTU ,its something that cannot be differentiated easily either. Some people says NTU is harder to enter in engineering course but does that mean it is better? We couldnāt trust the rankings either. So we will just have to trust our seniors & their experience because the only thing we are sure of is that both the university are good.
I heard from seniors this rivalry contributes to unhealthy relationships between students from both sets of universities too. How unhealthy donāt you agree?

@michelle : I am still waiting for singapore. Got my offer from hkust . Results arent out for me for hku as i applied late ā¦

Hmm yea in China if you earn around 20,000 rmb, your salary is really high, so RMB PPP is really high compared to USD. I guess its similiar to HK but when I went there, things tend to be more expensive in HK but definitely cheaper āmoney number wiseā compared to Europe or the States.

So $18,000 is the median salary for HK citizens but how much do you think a student that graduates from one of the top HK university programs would earn? Lets say top 10 (university entrance score wise). Have people compiled statistics?

I know for IBGM about several years ago, when the 2nd year students did internships, their salary was approximately HKD20,000 - and yea, they WERE students. Also, top programs does not necessarily equate to top salary. Depends on the demand of the HK market :)

@dqbonafide: Yes, sometimes too much competition will inevitably lead to unhealthy relationships.

heyā¦i am an international student and would like to get admission in hkust or hkuā¦will be giving my sat1 on may 2ā¦what could be the ideal score for these two universities

I applied to BBA (law), Law and governments and law. Iām thinking about going to law school later on in life but then HKU had those programs so I applied haha. but anyways, I hope to see you at HKUST rubichino lol !

and everyone, good luck with the IB exams ! english is the first one! haha

Oh yeah, I forgot to add.
I got in for BBA at HKUSTā¦since someone asked me haha =]

Hi, do you mean u applied for CUHK GBS?
as I know, they havent admitted any international students last yearā¦
if it is going to do so this year, I doubt there will be 1-2 only.
Its because the āreputationā of non Jupas students are not as good.
although you might have strong academic results in the high skool in USA or UK etc.
its completely different in HKā¦

btw, I am a IBGMer from HKU (INternational Business and Global management) studying in year 1 who had spent 3 years studied in the UK before univ.

hi there! I am a hku student major in IBGM!
We constantly admit a few international students each year in our program.
I am not sure about the closing date but I was also a non-Jupas from the UK. (Studied in there for 3 years)
If you are hesitate to choose in betweeen UST and HKU, I suggest u do both, and wait for the offer.
But to be honest with you HKU is more all round with more wonderful experience that you would expect.
and the IBGM program is the program that I strongly recommend. Due to the financial tsuinami a lot of local students step backā¦but our program stresses that it is not necessary to be a business leader in the future, it is a good program that you can gain so much to enrich yourself as a whole!
well if you wanna find out more, you can click into our website:

Carmen Chan network: HKU
its open to the public, when u see info, its say IBGM 11ā
tats me

Hi Carmen, (thanks for the quadruple posting - haha)
I guess I will see you next year then :)

@samda: It really depends on what courses you are trying to shoot for and what additional qualifications you have to provide the UGAdmissions office. Ideally, as high as possible ;)

@SDG1- The salary issue did worry me as well, even though overall costs seem lower in HK and allā¦plus if you suddenly decide to go to the states the money conversion would be baaad. good the other way around though, =P and an HK tour would be awesome

@carmen- thanks for the posts, although i am not going into IBGM, ill look for your fb, more connections the better =D
