Hey I got the admissions interview invite from HKU FINALLY! it was a late application, so really happy now! engineering btw…any advice please?!

@BoelterHall: They are rigorous definitely, 4 years of engineering compressed into 3 years, but where are you studying currently?

HKUST’s engineering definitely will not be non-rigorous, and since it is such a subjective matter, I cannot give any opinion on it. Where would you be transferring from though?

Good luck Flibb, is that a phone interview? I don’t have any clues for engineering interviews so - anyway, congrats again!

Thanks TheGrand! Yeah its a phone interview on the 27th…and its okay I guess it’ll be similar to that of UST’s…lets see! UST decision isn’t far too, has to come out around 29th
!

hey! hi guys! I am from Singapore and I am in my final year of studies. I am just wondering what is the academic criteria for entry for business course and economics. I am born in Hong Kong but moved to Singapore when I was 7. Pretty much considered an international student eh?

@ intimetocome: hey! i’m in pretty much the same circumstances as you! i was born in hk but migrated to singapore when i was 5. I’m really hoping to return to HK for uni this year.
Anyway, you will not exactly be considered an international student coz you will be paying local fees. But you will have to apply under non-jupas. Are you currently in J2 if I’m not wrong?
As for business and econs courses, I just know that they are very competitive, esp for UST. But I’m not exactly sure about the academic criteria for entry to these courses though.

Hope this helps!

@intimetocome/flashing.light: Firstly, it depends on what citizenship you are holding - to determine whether you are in the international pool or local pool (and also what fees you would be paying eventually). You will be classified under Non-Jupas if you are not holding Hong Kong qualifications.

If you are intending to apply to the most competitive business courses: ie. HKU’s BBA IBGM, HKUST’s GBUS or CUHK’s Global Business, you would be looking at outstanding academic credentials. For your information, I am accepted at HKU’s BBA IBGM with a conditional offer of 40 points in the IB Diploma - that is approximately equivalent to the top 6% in the world - just so you have an idea of the degree of competitiveness.
I’m actually a Hong Konger - studying in Singapore applying under the Non-Jupas Scheme. Hope this helps.

hey guys, thank you so much for the response! HKU is indeed very competitve, I will have to work extra hard to be able to get into it. I will!

Hmmm. Do you guys know the approx A lvl for econs and biz cause I am taking A lvl instead. Will it be useful to have good SAT and AP scores cause I am planning to take them while I am in army =(

yup. I am in J2. I am pretty much confuse by my status though. I am a Singaporean, born in Hongkong, holding HK identity card with 3 stars. I hope I will be considered for the locals fee, cause my parents is pretty much unwilling to send me back to Hk for such a high fee (in comparison to NUS)

Is it important to have a strong EC also? What about essays and recommendation? From what I know, I havent heard for the need of essays and stuff. Is it useful to have those?

Thanks so much for your replies. Very much appreciated!

yup flashing light i am in J2

No experience with A Level, but you would be expecting competitive scores -or again use the percentile information to get a good estimate of what you should get. Idk whats 3 stars haha - if I am not wrong, for locals it is about 42,000HKD and non-locals 70,000 - 100,000HKD, by international standard it is actually still quite cheap. Anyway, just make sure you convince your parents to let you apply first - and decided later when you have a choice.

SAT and APs are definitely a plus, if you can do well in them - I’m presuming 2200+ on the SAT and 5s on APs would really help your case

You have to write one personal statement for your application - but unlike the US, the emphasis isn’t that strong on that. Strong ECs are liked by the Adcoms esp if you are from the non-local pool.

Hi everyone! I did not drop by for so long as my pc broke down. Wow this discussion is inflating like a balloon!

I am in an awkwardly headache situation now.
I mentioned earlier I got an offer from HKUST for the BBA Program with 50% scholarship.
I also got an offer from HKU for the Medical Engineering Program with only 10% scholarship.
I am willing to pay more to get into HKU, but the problem is, I am not happy with the Engineering Program offered (which I wanted at the time I apply but somehow I changed my mind only after the deadline, what I really want is business).
Does anyone know if it is possible for me to apply to change to a business program after I was admitted into the engineering program in HKU? After one semester, maybe?

Here is another problem. Like dqbonafide, I am a Malaysian, who applied for Singapore Universities too, and I am in an extremely pathetic situation. The deadline for HKUST is just two days away, but Singapore Universities have yet to give any outcomes.
I applied for business double degrees in Singapore Universities and I definitely would choose them over HKUST as I was only offered a single degree in the latter.
So, I will die hard if I paid the deposit of HKD 20,000 to HKUST and get offers later from Singapore Universities. At that time, if I choose HKUST, I will be throwing away the double degree I want. If I choose Singapore, I will be as good as throwing HKD 20,000 into the sea (my parents will kill me for that).
I will die even in a harder way if I take the risk, don’t pay for HKUST, wait for miracles from Singapore, and at the end of the day, they turn me down, leaving my hands empty.

In conclusion, most probably I will end up in HKUST. See you (whoever going to HKUST) there.

T.T T.T T.T T.T T.T T.T T.T T.T T.T T.T

@Flibb: I can help you with the HKU engineering telephone interview, which I went through earlier (for a program I don’t want now T.T ). Most probably you will be interviewed by two lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering. They will take turns to ask you questions. Don’t worry, the questions are pretty much similar to that of HKUST’s. Common questions. Tell me about yourself, why do you want to study in Hong Kong, why do you choose HKU, why this program, how can you contribute to this field in the future. Piece of cake, nothing worth worrying. Hope this helps, good luck for your interview!

yup thanks for the advice =) I shall work extra hard to achieve better grades, so that I can get into HKU !

Argghh have been reading my EC and stuff. Actually did it out of interest rather than for application and stuff. I think it should be fine and good =).

But the problem is I have to serve NS first, so I can only apply only 2 years later =( ARGHHH wad a long wait

Anyway, they conduct interview through phone for Singapore application?

@Donutz, if you have raised your situation out a little earlier, I could give you some more useful advice, right now it doesn’t seem like you have any choices at all.

Anyway, you could:
- Try to contact HKU and see if the Faculty of Business & Economics will admit you to their (BBA/BBA (Acc/Fin) - I can only imagine they might make a slightest exception for this course since it is comparatively the least selective program at HKU) based on the proposed qualifications you hold. I highly doubt this is possible since most decisions are finalised already or will be done so within the following week and each dpt has their own evaluation process.

You could CALL and MAIL the Singapore Universities and ask for admission decisions explaining that it (whichever one) is your first choice and you would attend if you get accepted (mean it though!) - its better if you did this earlier - just like HKU was very understanding and released my decision a week earlier than it should be.

Call HKUST to ask for an extension for the deposit.

AND, its quite amusing how I thought you were asking for suggestions and you end up concluding where to go. hahaha

@intiemtocome: “Actually did it out of interest rather than for application and stuff.” - Good! I did that too and HKU liked me for what I am and what I do. You would be having a phone interview, and yes, I would imagine you have to apply 2 years later. You can mail them to check if they allow deferred entries for UG Admissions

@TheGrand: Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Actually I have already requested HKU for a change in programs but they said this is quite impossible as admission offers have been given out.

I have also contacted HKUST to extend the deadline. It used to be 20th April and it has been extended to 27th April. They stated clearly in the e-mail that they will not extend it for a second time.

Now the thing I can do is to call or mail Singapore Universities.

Like you say, there really isn’t any choices for me. That is why I made that bitter conclusion.

Thank you again.

@Donutz: Thanks a lot for the info! So this is more or less the same as HKUTS’s. I rest is peace now…this should hopefully be easy Thanks again!

@donutz : I asked UST for extension but they arent to keen to give it to me. So I paid.
Anyway if you end up in UST do pass me your msn contact. I have no clue
how is Hong Kong hehe. NTU results are out though.

Pay the deposit. If you end up in Singapore you will save much more than what you
have to spend in HK. You can loan up to 90% in singapore plus living expenses isn’t that big an issue as HK.

faints now I am having my own dilemma among LSE, Berkeley and HKU. I guess I kind of knocked LSE off the list - but Berkeley is such a nice place… Ahhhh Sunny California… but again the finance -_-

@Grand: May I ask, why no LSE? :)

Since all of you here are interested in hk universities,
may i ask you what your long-term plans are?
even though the popularity of hk schools is dramatically (especially this year i guess) increasing, putting US colleges aside and choosing HK is definitely not an ordinary decision…
So im just wondering what you are all expecting to gain from hk universities,

Free tuition for first year at least.
Access to work in China, HK
Save money for grad school
I also love HK (especially food, girls haha…) but I am not sure what living long term there would feel like.
Basically its of finance reasons and the program I might be going to isn’t too bad and allows students to network with companies early on.

@rubichino: I wouldn’t say hk’s popularity is “dramatically” increasing, but yea, it is increasingly popular.

@TheGrand: I am just wondering: Did you apply for any scholarship for HKU, and did they give you any?

@ysbera: you are going for the dual degree in UST right? I am not quite sure, but from the look of it, UST seems to have a high percentage of male…
