btw, visited UST’s campus today!

How was the visit?

* Just did a bit of reordering to make things look neater, since IB revision is so boring…
C’mon people, starting filling the list. We are so gonna do a CC-Hong Kong reunion, haha. *

This is crazy, I just realised I’ve started posting in this thread 95 days ago… and at that time, I wasn’t even think of going to Hong Kong :S

HKU:

@TheGrand I totally understand what you mean. I think I was the second person to post on this thread. At that time I wanted to go HK a little but not really that much as I was hoping for my dream US schools but I didn’t get them so I guess HK is my target now. However, after careful consideration I think HKUST might suit me even more and I can always go to US for grad school. Although I can’t say I wasn’t hurt after April 1st but I guess getting into a top US school as an international student is exceptionally hard and a large amount of luck is required.

@ysbera: You basically said what I wanted to say - I absolutely agree with EVERY single bit, except that at that time, I almost had no intention of studying in HK. Lol, thinking back, HKU was regarded by me a ‘safety’, how ignorant was I then, blurred by all the fancy US schools- haha

TheGrande: It was good! It was a lot better than I’d remembered from my last visit. (The last time I was there I bumped into a bunch of graduates taking pictures with soft toys… freaked me out a little.) I loved it because it was so GREEN. I never get to see grass in the actual city (well, where there is grass, you’re not allowed to sit on it or anything, just look at it because it’s so RARE) so I got a bit excited when I saw all the greenery, the little pier, ocean etc. The people were pretty awesome too! There were loads of international students(yay!).

Oh yeah, I came across a facebook group that was called something along the lines of “You know you’re from UST when…” and it said “You know you’re from UST when you know it stands for University of Stress and Tension…” and “You know you’re from UST when you have mid-terms, quizzes, coursework when other students from other universities don’t.”

Um.
Should I be worried? I’ve never been graded against a bell curve before… Some chick at the university said I should expect a C average during my first year… and I have to maintain a B+ grade in order to renew my scholarship each year or something. Oh, and first year students are required to play a certain amount of sports. Hahah maybe we can be gym buddies, ysbera!

Btw, TheGrand: which school do you go to in Singapore? UWCSEA? Tanglin?

One last thing, I swear. c:
Is IB killing any one else’s sense of humour?! I keep making these lame jokes in reference to IB English/TOK… hahah ■■■.

okay, megal fail at trying to make my text bold/italicized. how did you do it TheGrande?!

Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll do fine EVEN if you are graded on a curve. The students are probably exaggerating the not-so-good side of HKUST. And yes, I do agree that greenery is lacking quite a bit in Hong Kong :S

By the way instead of using <> try , ** bold ** and * italicize* can be done like that And I wouldn’t want to reveal too much info here on CC, its way too public, haha :)

BACK TO REVISION -_-

If I am not wrong, other than the HKU International Entrance scholarship for non-local students, all students are automatically considered for merit scholarships available at HKU. I think you will be contacted if you are shortlisted/ or told how you can meet certain requirements to achieve certain scholarship award.

@TheGrand: hmm interesting… did they notify you about it?

No, I am not notified.
But that is what I heard, from some source which I don’t remember - no guarantees though.

@spillcanvans

Sounds good. I think I’ll really enjoy it if I manage to make my offer. Haha.

Gym buddies sounds good as well but NOOOO to the bell curve thing, I think I need a A- to B+ to renew my scholarship. I should have applied for Swire but was way too lazy.

And to respond to your last part. IB killing my sense of humor? Haha not really, my humor is unique but I can now understand some jokes I didn’t understand before like (cough “inappropriate”) I wish you were my derivative so I could lie tangent to your curves (hah I have been doing too much calculus these days)…

ROFLOLMAO @ I wish you were my derivative so I could lie tangent to your curves
I MUST put that to my facebook quotes - Oh WAIT, I deactivated it 2 days ago, and I’m still staying strong. sob I really miss it now hahahahahaha.

I never knew anything about Swire scholarship until I came up here, what exactly is it about and what does it cover? Who is eligible?

Anyway, gotta do some physics…

Honestly location may not be a fact as important as that is in the US, since HK is afterall a small city.
I would make my decision mainly based on academics.
HKU is liks Harvard; UST, MIT. If you wanna study science with some top-notch-all-work-no-play students from mainland, go to UST. HKU is more like for a bunch of rich kids in Medic, law and social science.

That is some REALLY HUGE generalisations
According to your analogy, you are suggesting that MIT students just work and do not play - that is DEFINITELY incorrect, my roommate is IN MIT and he is more than just a genius, he puts in a lot of effort in making-the-world-a-better-place campaigns.

HKU and UST have the same school fees, does that make HKU’s students a bunch of rich kids?

Each of the school has its strength, but that doesn’t mean the university cannot provide you anything other than academics - and I must say, it is silly to say that.

If your decision is made mainly on academics, then I see you as a person who wastes the resources and opportunities a US University such as Purdue can provide.

@spillcanvas: first year students are required to play a certain amount of sports?! like team sports? oh no. I suck at sports.

@thegrand : obviously he has little knowledge of what is an university .

I love sports. YAY! :D
