im a US applicant, ethnically im half chinese, half euro-stuff. a group interview sounds kind of fun =P so were you interviewed in malaysia? they had an HK representative go to this fair im guessing?

Wow Michelleger you are from US. Why would you choose an oriental place like HK instead of universities in your hometown? I thought there are a whole bunch of prestigious universities in US? Harvard perhaps? Yes I was interviewed in Malaysia, they sent their representative here.

To people applying to Hong Kong universities: AVOID ALL UNIVERSITIES LIKE THE PLAGUE except for HKU and HKUST. This is coming from a Hong Konger. All the other universities are a big waste of time and money and suck. A LOT.

haha, oh yes, US has plenty of prestigious universities, some people think i am nuts to go to HK! I applied to a couple local good schools, no Harvard(i do not think i could get in there! know a couple ppl who did...) and got accepted but my hearts set on HK! I think HK is exciting and a change of pace would be good for me. I am just drawn to asia for some reason, prob ancestry...i much prefer asian culture to american. tho i love US too. US does have many good unis, and many local public schools are very good too, but HKU is a very good Uni as well, and for its tuition price it is a bargain! and for me with chance to master cantonese, and maybe mandarin, it is the opportunity of a lifetime.

paperbagmonster, that makes me a little nervous, but really? CUHK and polytech are no good then? can you elaborate on why HKU and UST are better and why others are not?

Ya paperbagmonster, what do you mean? This makes me nervous too. Do you mean they don't consider international applicants? I applied for CUHK too.

hey people... i have an e-mail from HKUST for a phone interview this Thursday. Anyone else got that invitation? Any advice? . I havent received any admissions decisions yet.

@michelleger: I really like your attitude, I'm glad at least not everyone is obnoxious enough to apply to universities ie. Ivies/Oxbridge JUST for their prestige and actually looked at the bigger picture.

To those who have received/will be receiving a phone interview, can I ask if you guys submitted your application with what type of academic results? e.g. GCE A-Levels or something? Cos mine is still pending (should be receiving in early March 2009). I just wanna know if I'm still in the race since I haven't gotten the interview yet! I applied to HKU and HKUST in early Jan too. Thanks!

@Donutz, they definitely consider international applicants, HKU has said they will offer me a spot, but they didnt send me a letter yet. and i know internationals whove gone. it makes me nervous tho, because i dont know, its just a nerve-y statement.

@Khan91, congrats! man...hkust hasnt sent me confirmation email that theyve received my stuff...wonder if they do that...i had an interview with HKU and they did the same exact thing, emailed me and wanted interview to be in a couple days. my interview was very short, just 5 min and just basic interview-y stuff. i was asked a little about my app, and about myself. just stay cool and collected, they are granting you an interview most likely because they like what they see in paper and want to hear it too!

@TheGrand, oh thank you thank you! that is such a compliment for me, to hear i have transcended at least somewhat..haha, yes its easy to be swept up in the ivy fever but really i would be so proud to attend HKU, moreso than ivy league because, as you said, the collective exp. at HKU would far surpass an ivy in my opinion, and in my personal case. =)

@krazynanoo- send over an email to the help line or, if youre international, to the international student coordinators. tell them you want to know about the status of your app, politely, as its been awhile and maybe youve already been accepted to other schools. oh, but if youre transcripts arent in yet, then they cant look at your app til then im assuming..i dont know what GCE A-levels are...

I applied in the 'Early Decision' tyoe thing, in December.

@michelleger, No, HKUST doesnt confirm receving the materials but they do send you an e-mail if something is missing. To be safe, i suggest you call and ask if they've received all the documents.

@ krazynanoo. From what i gather, the interview is for the scholarships. One friend of mine didnt get the interview, even though she has already been offered a place. (without scholarship). If you applied in Jan, you wont get the results until April. Yea, i submitted the GCE A-levels and the SAT's.

To everyone, Good Luck!

Oh congratulations Michelle on your offer!
Do you know if anyone has gotten an offer for HKU's BBA (International Business and Global Management) or HKUST dual degree program?

hahaha IBGM is THE MOST selective program at HKU so I wouldn't be surprised that many will get rejected from it. 30 slots in total, but approx. 10 are reserved for the geniuses in Hong Kong. I recall that only about 7-10 slots last year were offered to not HKALE qualifications.

@michelleger - no problem :) haha you sound like a great person to meet with ;)

yea I kind of expected that but IBGM is the only course in HKU that actually interests me. So basically do HK Universities care more about SAT grades or IB grades?

oh I also want to add. So is IBGM more competitive than lets say Stanford University for an international applicant?

Honestly, I cannot be sure for an international applicant, but thinking that there are only 7-10 spots for however many applicants with international qualifications, it is PRETTY HARD to get in. International students (like countries far from HK) should get an edge because I believe diversity is a considering factor too. I would not be surprised if the admission rate is lower than Stanford's 9-10% because IT IS HKU's signature course.

IB grades are much more recognised than SAT and hence a heavier weighting should* be placed on it.

Oh and by the way,
has anyone applying to HKU got any confirmation or account or anything from them yet??

@ Michelleger: Thanks for the reply! Uh GCE A-Levels is an exam that originated from UK but it is taken by many students in the world as well. if you're interested, I'm sure you can get a better explanation by googling. Actually I've sent all the schools an email to enquire if they received my transcripts and also reminded them about my pending results. Both HKU and HKUST replied within a day.

@Khan: Thanks for the reply! Yeah I realised so, most of my seniors recevied their admissions notice pretty late ranging from April to July...Anyway, are you from Hong Kong?

@ysbera- no, sorry, i dont personally know anyone whos applied for IBGM, but i am in contact with an alumni of one of the BBA programs...tho my last msg she hasnt gotten back to. =/ but i think i had found a blog awhile back of an international guy from US who got into the IBGM program, but the blog was from...idk, 2006 maybe? if i can dig it up, i can post a link to it.

@TheGrand- Haha, thanks! =) and to answer your question, you probably already read that i wrote this, but hku sent me an email that they will offer me a spot. about a month or so after i sent in my app they sent me a confirmation email that they got my stuff and i had a request for an interview. so you have applied to HKU as well then?

Regarding contacting the schools for information.

I emailed HKU and told them my TOEFL score, they replied very fast, but their replied seemed a bit less personal as they said Dear Candidate while HKUST is Dear (Your name). Basically for HKUST I emailed an admission officer that came to my school and then he gave me the email address of my application processor and I have been talking with her. Really nice person, very personal contact. I really like HKUST and I would pick its program over IBGM.
