HKU or HKUST

Sorry everyone for some side conversations.

@Jacque88: I wanted to apply for it at the first place, but I sort of lost my application number and I send many e-mails to them to request the application number. No reply. So I called. More than 50 calls I made. 5 different numbers some more. Nobody pick up the phone. So, I fed up and ended up not applying.

@QuincyKid: They say computer system error. What a perfect excuse. So they are suggesting even computers are racists too? 95% Chinese eh?

@dqbonafide: You are totally correct. 4574 victims, 95% are Chinese, according to the paper.

@Michelleger: Thanks very much for your initiative and effort in the Facebook group.

@quincykid i’m just wondering if 24 august is the confirmed date? i’ve been trying to find out the actual arrival date but i was emailed a provisional date of 21 august. i thought we will only the confirmed date when they send us the student package this month. speaking of which, anyone of u guys receive it yet? it’s like probably the most exciting document!

Hey,
dqbonafide&QuincyKid: Haha what to do students that involved is very unfortunate just like happy for 2 hours and disappointed for the rest(The offer is published at 3pm until 5pm they correct it). What we can say is our education system is messy some of them trying to escape from their responsibility." SORRY" is for everything.

Donutz: Yup that occurred to me too the new system is a bit mess up what i can say. They don’t have an exact answer. I called up they call me to call upu and upu said is usm responsible but when i call usm, usm call me to call upu. Push here and there i also blank out.

Poor Chinese, always discriminated :(

@fridayevening : yup, the 24th is confirmed. I also received the email saying that 21th is the expected date, but that was previous decision. My friends had ask one of the international officer of HKUST and they confirmed it will be 24th. Maybe you could email them for a confirmed answer.

@Donutz , dqbonafide , jacque88 : oh my god, 50 calls and they don’t even have exact answer, what a mess ? Maybe because they are public university, they think there got a lot of people queuing up to study in the university, therefore they don’t have the initiative to set up better customer service.
However, today I have heard another story, they said that the fact that the majority are chinese is because majority of students who qualify for the selection process are also chinese. It might be a fact that USM had abandoned the quota selection system. But, overall, this fraud is really a ‘bad’ joke.

@UST ppl : Means I can’t live anywhere if I reached earlier like Aug 15? That’s bad, my
parents want me to head there early to buy all the stuffs i need. Maybe I can sleep in Disneyland.

@ USM topic : Imagine their happiness when they get Dentistry or Pharmacy.
Striking the jackpot & telling you “we” announced the wrong numbers !

dqbonafide&UST ppl: haha everyone watch out the newspaper on 16Aug if our friend get caught up sleeping illegally in Disneyland. Dont worry Kowloon police station will provide you better facilities. Many Hong Kong movie use Kowloon police station as one of the scene. Pretty cool if you get to stay there:) as your 1st trip to HK before entering UST.

QuincyKid, Donutz , dqbonafide : Thats why now the unfortunate go and redeem the price only know they are holding a wrong ticket that is not eligible to redeem. Is always happened that once a bad news is out there are many kinds of stories. Thus, We here only can wish the unfortunate students luck on the coming selection into public uni.“Thats why we applied to UST”.

@quincykid- you asked awhile ago about hku orientation dates i think, i dont know that they’ve published official dates yet, i would assume they would be around the same dates as UST’s…b/c what you said was UST’s date has been the HKU orientation dates in the past…

august 23rd? what? so late?! actually maybe not, but on the visa app they said the arrival date should be around August 15th…so I assumed that the accommodation would be available by then. I guess not? boo.

oh ya, the visa. i was thinking where i got the idea of august 15. i guess the only way to be sure is to wait for the student package to arrive.

Hey guys. Anyone been through HKU engineering interview? I have one next week. I know someone mentioned it in this forum but I am tiny tad lazy to go through 50 pages again . So if someone can share their questions with me? Please ?

@dqbonafide:

----------Forwarded from the post #196 (or 194, not sure)----------------------------
Hi guys,
I just finished my phone interview with HKU
2 Professors were interviewing me at the same time.
Unlike what i expected, the phone- interview was rather chill.
They were not negative nor bombastic(?) at all…
and the interview lasted only 5? or 7 minutes. It was extremely short !
For those who may be interested in preparing for interview,
I will list down some of my questions.

 1. Introduce yourself? (Easy start~)

) You live in ____. Is there any reason why you are currently staying there?
*) Living alone? or with your family?
*) Studying in Hongkong means you have to be apart from your family. Do you have any experience of living alone?
( questions are for those who are currently studying in another school)

2) Why did you choose to study in HK? (typical…)
3) Any preferences in HKU? Any reasons for applying HKU? (Typical…)
4) Why this major? specifically? (typical… mine was engineering)
5) planning to earn master degree or start working after grad?
6) Have you applied any other schools in HK? (causing dilemma… ‘Should I be honest? or flattering?’ I chose to be honest, and said i got a conditional offer from HKUST…)
6-1) What is conditional offer like?

and that was the end of the interview…
I recommend you to prepare for general questions… And you will be fine… (at least for engineering) They certainly did not ask about any technical questions -_- haha… that will be very scary…
I asked when I can hear the decision, but I barely understood them because of bad signal, and their Chinese accent. Anyways, hope this can help some of people here.!! Gluck!

Hi, everyone, just to ask whether anyone was concerning about the danger of exposing to H1NI swine flu if we are going Hong Kong, since there are already some cases there. (Not saying that there are none in our own country though) Just hoping to get some advice because my mum started to get a little worried over this.
What do locals in Hong Kong think?

Hey everyone, I was wondering whether anybody has tried part-time on-campus work at HKUST? Can you give me an idea of how much is the hourly pay rate there?

@ rubicinho : thanks !

@ quincykid : I wouldn’t worry too much. As hk is a place where most people from around the world will most probably pass by , I guess it is normal that the number of cases there is higher. After H1N1… there might be another kind of disease outbreak, it is impossible to predict and ensure you are safe no matter where you are. Chill! :D

No concern regarding H1N1 at all. There are 7 million people in Hong Kong and there are only 30 cases - and majority of them are returnees from the US. So just wear a mask and don’t talk to those who come from the US :stuck_out_tongue: (like michelleger lol)

I’m kidding, the healthcare in HK is one of the best in the World, just like they handled SARS - so no worries on my behalf

Michelleger,

My husband and I are both HKU graduate. Overall, HKU is better than HKUST. However, HKUST edges HKU on some science subjects and business studies.

So it depens on which subjects you are going to apply. Don’t think about City U, Poly U, they are second tier.

Why choose Us in HK. Are you Mainlander who targets to stay for work here in HK?

I am sending my son to the States for BS to pave the way for U in the US. To me, even HKU is second tier to a large number of Us in the US.
