I am from malaysia too. They do offer scholarships for direct-entry students. I am not too sure about diploma holders because I enter with a-levels , maybe you can ask the scholarship unit about this?

Did you take your diploma at a public Uni?

From a Malaysian’s view, Hong Kong’s tuition fees is one of the cheapest if you want to study overseas but their living expenses will be nearly three to four fold ours.

I am almost prepared for HKU, but two things are keeping me back. I have to pay a deposit of ~USD 1290 but I am not sure if I’ll qualify the conditional offer, so if I don’t qualify, does that mean that I’ll waste my deposit? Also, I have to report to my other university by the 10th of August, while my final test scores come out on 11th, and it seems that I’ll be unsure about meeting the conditional offer till the end Leaving the other uni means totally relying on HKU, about which I’m not sure if I’ll be able to meet the conditional offer…this seems too risky!

Rubichino: I know this is incredibly late and you probably know the answer to your question by now, but regarding the deposit, they won’t be alerting you separately when they receive it. If it’s really bothering you and you want to know if they’ve gotten it yet, then you should email them or call them up. UST is relatively good at replying emails, while HKU is absolutely terrible…

And to who ever mentioned the MTR system in HK: if I ever had to wait 10 minutes for a train I would probably implode with impatience… The longest I’ve had to wait is 4 minutes, I think. But to me that extra bus ride + mtr to get into town from UST is a big downside…

Flibb: 1. congrats on getting accepted to HKU! 2. ask for an extention? have more confidence in yourself! hahah, you’ll meet their requirements, i’m sure.

Michelle: Definitely get a laptop in HK… It’ll be easier to get it fixed then too, as the warranty will prob apply to the repair centres in HK.

Nicky: What are PRC students? I kinda wanted to do Biology… (Marine Biology actually… wanted to be an animal conservationist hahah still do actually but life’s a bitc h and things just didn’t work out </3 so why Biology? What do you want to do after uni?)

Hmm. I’m all for the facebook idea. Ahhhh I’m getting excited now.

flibb- its a tough choice! maybe you can put down deposits for both? but then youll have that much money down the drain either way…im totally relying on hku right now, not a good idea! lol, i am getting really nervous for my calculus final b/c part of my conditions are 85% in my majors, and right now i have an 85 average so if my final is below 85 im screwed =/ ahhhhhh

and spillcanvas, yaaay you like the facebook idea, haha no one else seemed to have thoughts on it, maybe ill just start a group for everyone and post the link. hope it doesnt dud, lol!

ok, i started a group…so if u wanna join, do so please! =D its called HKU/UST CC’ers, here’s a link but it mite not work since im admin so my home page is a bit different, but anyway -----> [Login | Facebook](Redirecting...) if it doesnt work just search HKU/UST on facebook and youll find it.

oh yeah, and if anyone is worried about privacy i can make it closed once everyone who wants to join has joined…otherwise ill just leave it as an open group.

Wow, this thread is getting so huge!!!
I still didn’t send in my student visa stuffs yet… I hope its not too late…
Btw for the HKU ppl, did you guys choose a hall yet.
I am torn b/w Simon Lee and Swire…

dont worry about the student visa thing, i found out i wont be able to get mine processed until like july even tho i sent it all in since you must have a confirmed acceptance before they can process it. if you have that then go ahead and send it tho =) noo, im still wishy-washy about halls, wish i could go visit b4 i pick, and also i think i actually have to wait for a confirmed acceptance b4 then too.

Thanks people! Joined the group, hope everyone joins!

@TheGrand: Conditional at AAB at GCE’s (90%+s). My last year grades were AAB, so if I slip even one bit (which I think is gonna happen :D) I am screwed lah! My other choice is Carnegie Mellon Qatar campus, for CS, which I guess was my safety.

@spillcanvas: Its gonna be really funny. I’ll just go and attend the International student orientation at the other uni, and if I find out i’ve qualified, I’ll quit, take a ticket to HK, and enroll there Btw, PRC - People’s republic of china, i.e., mainland Chinese students.

@michelleger: I think you’re right, maybe some money gone waste can be for the better. Double depositing, the other uni forbids it I am sooo screwed! tough choice I’ve got to make in 2 weeks!

Oh and the group is a really nice idea, interesting to see how everyone comes to life…but I think it should be a ‘closed’ group, privacy sort of matters, right? I’ve already joined btw!

okay im going to make the group a closed one so we all can retain a little privacy from creepers =P lol, j/k but yeah i think closed is a good idea too. ill leave it open for one more day so its easier to join for at least that long. after that all you have to do is find the group and click on the button or whatever that youre requesting to join.

That’s a good idea - there are more stalkers than we think
Pretty sure at least another 20 more people are following this thread w/o posting hahahaa

I just joined the group guys! =]
I still need to wait for my IB scores, but I’m so excited for HK ! haha

@any UST-ers:
do any of you guys know when we get to choose our dorms? and do you guys have any idea about each hall? I just looked through the descriptions online but they’re not that helpful lol

@merrypips : No, they didn’t really inform us about accommodation yet. I only know that 24th of august will be the orientation day for international students, and accommodation will be available on august 23th.

How about HKU, when the orientation starts ?

Hey , @donut–haha nop i cant apply to USM either because they need my dip 6semester. but i guess USM is useless new policy create so much probs. So, U apply to USM ? haha My friend got fraud too…

Off topic sorry : I think the whole fiasco that USM created somehow shows how unfair the selection process for admission is. Out of the 4,000 plus that got admitted and got rejected after that , 3000 plus was Chinese ? Correct me if I am wrong. This totally blunders USM’s effort to lead the way for Malaysian Universities.

@dqbonafide & jacque88 : exactly ! many of my friends are the victims even though they got 4 flat during their matriculation study…sad to say, but it is really unbelievable when those rejected more than 90% are chinese, so unfair …

hi guys! just a heads up, i will close the group tonight, after that you can still join though! just send a request and make sure you give your CC id…so far we have got 11 people, all have ID’ed themselves but one(wow, beggining to sound like an exclusive club).
