meekle: I got an email from CEDARS one or two days after I got a firm offer email… All happened this week.

ooo i hope i hear about my hall placement soon. i just got notification of a firm offer but no actual letter…

just how good is the IBGM at HKU? i went to their talk in Singapore a day ago, and they just made it seem so difficult, and then they told me that IB offers are typically made to students who get around 39/42…is it that difficult, or is it just that they are over-exageratting the gravity of the situation? i mean, the offers are higher than the of Oxvridge if im not wrong?

to Hermann:

I’m not sure about how good IBGM is at HKU. But regarding IB result, maybe they exaggerate a little bit. I applied for Bachelor of Social Science and the conditional offer was to get 35 with at least 4 in English A1 SL. I, fortunately, was able to satisfy their condition and they accepted me. I’m not sure about the condition to IBGM, but youre right 39 can get you to oxbridge. The condition for IBGM and SocScience may not be that different…

hi hermann, we have a user on here who was accepted to IBGM. i believe his IB requirement was at least 40. i remember it being in the 40’s. if you do some searching thru this huge thread you’ll find it. the conditions are quite different i think because there is a lot of competition for IBGM in particular. the other business majors however, i believe, vary greatly within requirements but IBGM is the hardest(i think…).

@hermann- yup i just checked thru the threads, TheGrand on this thread had a conditional offer on the basis of his IB score being at least 40 points. also im pretty sure he did well in his interview, good grades, etc. but its not as hard for non-locals…i heard from an IBGM-er they had someone from korea who got accepted with no interview, not sure what his scores were like. conditions can vary greatly within departments and even specific majors. im in science faculty, my conditions were for AP exams which are pretty easy in general. i had to get three scores of 4 on AP exams and just keep my grades up.

40 on IB is a relatively lenient requirement when the median HKAL grades for local IBGM students are straight As (excluding Chinese and English). http://www.britishcouncil.org/eumd-hongkong-naric_briefing_note_29nov07.pdf

Oh wow, pardon me for the misleading statements lol, im not too familiar with IBGM. But wow, 40 is pretty high… You can get into some top 10 unis in the world in 40 i guess. Since, IBGM seems to be the hardest, then it’s reasonable i guess. Well good luck. >_<"

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this but if I still haven’t got an offer yet from HKU, does that mean I’m unlikely to be offered one?

i am next year senior. and i am desire to go to HKU and UST. Do u guys mind sharing your gpa, sat scores, and your EC? it will be very useful for those who is intend to go to HKU next year? Help is appreciate.

@cantabile: Most people have finished signing firm offer letter after meeting conditional offer already, and I also am leaving for Hong Kong this Saturday. So I think you are unfortunately rejected…

@anthony_7237: I believe you can assume from the conditional requirement for Global Business or BBA or Economics applicants. HKU will likely to ask your IB above 40 and pretty high GPA(90% i guess?) over 2000 SAT?.. I am really not sure because I am an engineering student. Engineering Faculty focuses more on maths and science. For example, I didn’t even get over 2000 on SAT and my GPA was only 3.52-3.54. However, I turned in a few math competition awards + AP physics, calculus grades. Good luck!

@Sam Lee: Omg, that’s a shocking chart…

Actually, getting multiple As in HKAL is even harder than the chart suggests. Why? Because it’s so hard to get an A in any given subject, it’s more difficult to strategize. I know someone that got an A in applied math but a D in pure math. If you look at the chart, that would translate to A and a B under the UK system. Well, he got 800 on SAT math and I know how bright he is. There’s no way he would get just a B in any science/math subject in UK.

You will find a lot more straight As or results like 4As/1B or 2As/3Bs in UK and on this board, you’ve probably have seen how people “predict/expect” straight As on A-level. The idea that you can have a conditional offer based on predicted A-level result just doesn’t exist in HK. In HK, NOBODY expects straight As. Each year, less than 20 out of ~40,000 people get that result. Instead, it’s very common to find students with grades like 1A/2Ds/2Es. It’s much harder to do well in all subjects than even the chart may suggest.

Hi everyone,

I noticed that most people applying are taking IB. Does that mean HK prefer IB over AP? (I’m taking mostly AP classes…).

Thanks.

Hello,

I’m planning to apply to UST as a transfer student next year! Any thoughts?

:D

hi guys, for all those who were accepted into HKU or UST and did the IB, what were your conditional offers and what program(s) did you apply? thanks!

@Samlee- wow i dont doubt you…i know some hong kong chinese immigrants in US, their kids wanted to move back to HK to study for secondary school and they told them they would not be able to handle it! :p

@ ALL NEW PPL posting to this thread! You guys should probably start a new thread about your prospective schools, this thread is quite stale, all of us have been decided what school we want to go to, i think u wuld do best trying to find this years niche

@lain98- to give you an idea, on this thread we have one student, he was admitted to IBGM program in HKU(Very competitive) with an IB of 38 i think. or was it 40…? and we have someone in social sciences faculty with an IB requirement of 36…havent heard of any below 36 points tho.

@beloved- No, its just that all of us are from different areas, some schools follow IB curriculum more, my school did not offer it, so I just took a few AP’s, SAT and that was that.

system failure- sry hav nooo idea.

Do you know whether IB is required for HKU/UST? I am studying at an international school at HK. Do HK universities take SAT scores?

help me pls,
i have a big doubt.
i have 12 yrs of schooling and now i am pursiung beng at hkust.
I was earlier put in year 0, but i got exempted from physics and lang, that were keeping in year 0. So, now i am in year 1.

I want to do an mba later on .
I am wondering i will be having 15 years whereas others will have 16 years of education.
I have checked out the top bschools requirement like harvard etc, all require atleast 15 years of education, so thats ok…
