HKU or HKUST

Hi guys,

I am currently in Year 12 in an International School in Hong Kong and about to apply to HKU to study English. The thing is though is that I really messed up on my IB predicted grades, in which I only scored a 29/42 (the result of slacking off) not including TOK and EE, which could potentially give me 3 more points but out of a score of 45. There is a chance I may be able to boost my English grade from a 5/6 to a 6, but my English teacher never clearly specifies how I can do that, apparently I have to ‘impress him’ somehow. This boost could raise my predicted grade from to 30/42. A former year 13 at my school got into HKU to study English with a predicted grade of 30/45. So I was wondering if anyone could offer any insight of my chances of getting in to HKU.

Thanks

Hey guys, I’m interested in either HKUST or HKU international business programmes e.g IBGM but may I know what are the requirements to enter these specific courses for a singaporean A level student? I willbe apply under the non-jupas international criteria but my grades are really horrible. I have yet to receieve my a level results so I have to use my mid yr and prelim results which are terribly ridiculous to look at. So far, I have attained an A for project work(and I’m intending to send the examiner’s written comments on my presentation skills), B for chinese. As for my prelim grades, my english is an E but I’m confident that I will get an A or B for the final A’s, math’s C but I think I’ll get either an A or B for A levels…but for chemistry which is taken at H2 level, I may have difficulty in attaining an E and above.

In short, here’s a summary of the situation above:
prelim------> a levels
english E A/B
math C A/B
chinese B
chemistry E E/D/C
econs D ?
Literature C ?
project work A ( i’m sending the examiner’s report on my presentation skills)

To remedy my horrible english prelim grades, I will be taking the IELTS and be sending my o level grades too.

as for CCA, I was a member of dance and I was involved in an overseas community project and I’m also the vice-chairman of my class.

In addition, I will be having an internship with a law firm.

do you think I will have a chance at HKU/HKUST?

@ jennifershuc: I am a local guy from Hong Kong. For we Hongkongers, it takes approximately 2 to 3 A’s in A-Level to get into this subject. But I am not sure about the A-Level in Singapore when compared to the Hong Kong A-Level exam. So far I know that the Hong Kong A-Level is quite renowned for its difficulties.

Besides, concentrating on your studies would be a good thing for HKU, as HKU looks quite much to your number of A’s. But for HKUST, they take a rather holistic approach, and extra curriculars / posts / interviews are more important.

jennifershuc,

To be honest, I think those grades are not gonna get you into IBGM. Even though the program loves internationals and gives them more leeway than locals, the international pool is still top-notch. I think one CC member said his conditional offer asked for an IB score of 40+. Perhaps you can try the regular BBA, which IMO, is probably still a reach.

will they call for interviews? will an internship with a bank help? thanks for the advice.

Internship with a bank won’t help offset the poor grades (by the standard of IBGM). Keep in mind IBGM is the toughest to get in in Hong Kong, even tougher than acturial sciences and medicine. If Hong Kong has SAT, IBGM’s average score among the locals would easily be close to perfect and higher than those for Wharton or Harvard.

Let me give you some stats:
http://ibgm.business.hku.hk/</a></p>

Out of 35318 students, only 307 students got 3 or more As. That’s higher than 99th percentile. Keep in mind these 35318 students were already the top half of all students in HK (less than 50% survive the HKCEE (kinda like GCSE) to study for A-level). 153 of them picked HKU and even a minority of them would be more than enough to fill the whole class of IBGM.

http://ibgm.business.hku.hk/</a> shows the caliber of some of the students.

By the way, as far as how to interpret those grades go, I tell people to reorient their mindset by thinking a C in Hong Kong A-level is equivalent to an A in British A-level.

I posted the wrong link. I meant to use [University of Hong Kong Victorious at McCombs International Business Competition](http://blogs.mccombs.utexas.edu/mccombs-today/2009/11/university-of-hong-kong-victorious-at-mccombs-international-business-competition/) to show the caliber of some of the students.

Look into the regular BBAs. They are still great programs but less selective than IGBM.

@lain98
a friend of mine in BBA(A&F) got IB conditional offer of 32/33 (this was for 2009 intake).

Hey Mount 999

I’m really happy that your considering HKU :slight_smile: its a really good school for psychology。 i m pretty sure pretty sure you stand a good chance in entering this prestigious University。 Don’t forget to send in your application soon:)

hey ali1011

I think have a good chance of】 getting into hku。 Since you mentioned that someone has gotten into HKU with the same】 score that you currently have。 Either way there is no harm in working harder to improve your score to further increase your chances of getting】 into HKU。 Perhaps you can Email the】 Academic Liason‘s office for further enquiries or】 you can email the respective faculty for further information。

hello jeniferhsuc

The entry requirements for the IBGM programme in HKU are as follows :—

Students taking the GCE O-level and GCE A-level Examinations:

Grade E or above in seven subjects in the first and/or second attempt in the GCE O-level examination, of which:
* six subjects shall be obtained at one and the same time;
* one shall be English Language at grade C or above;
* one shall be Mathematics; and
* one shall be a language other than English (e.g. German, French), or if Chinese/Mandarin is offered as a language other than English, grade E or above in the GCE Advanced Level H1 Chinese is required; and

Grade E or above in two subjects at H2 level and one subject at H1 level (other than Chinese/Mandarin) or the equivalent in GCE A-Level examination.

As for interview’s。 They might have interviews as it is quite hard to enter this programme。 HKU only accepts 30 students per year for this programme。

I also think that an internship in a law firm doesn’t really help your chances. maybe an internship in a bank perhaps?

However, do work hard to further increase your chances of getting into hku. Don’t forget to send in your applications as applications are already open for next year’s intake :).

I want to apply for psychology at HKU, I scored 31 IB points 6 in English HL, do I have a chance?

Hi Roxann!

Thanks for the reply! I’ve checked the university requirements but that’s just the basic requirements. I’m scared that the actual entry requirements are much higher than those stated on HKU website. Currently, I’m no longer planning to apply for global business courses in either HKU or HKUST. For HKU, my first choice would be Business Administration (BBA) and then probably either econs&finance or finance or vice versa. So are these courses more difficult to get into compared to international business for international students? From my research, it seems that most international students are always choosing international business courses so I think competition is less stiff in BBA.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have looked through my school testimonials etc and although my (prelim) grades are lousy, they’ve met the entry qualifications for international students. Meanwhile, I’ll sending in my projected grades and wait for the actual ones to be released at the end of Feb or early Mar. However, my secondary school grades are good, no Cs and that I’ve have a good testimonial. I have participated in a lot of voluntary services, the most notable one was building a school for the underprivileged. I was the vice chairperson of my class and an active member of dance society. I don’t exactly know how much chance I will stand against other applicants for BBA courses but for now, I could only cross my fingers and hope.

Pardon me but may I know the grades of any successful INTERNATIONAL applicants to the BBA course? Thank you so much!

I forgot to mention that I was given an award for my voluntary services!

Those are just basic/official minimum requirements. The actual requirements are a lot higher for global business (among the most competitive programs, along with actuarial science and medicine). BBA would be easier and less competitive. It’s also a lot larger so it can take more students.

First some off-topic things.

When I saw this thread, I was like Lol. And then I went to the other thread. And then I was :eek: ZOMFG Hong kong people?! LOL.

Ok… never mind. I got carried away. Lol.

I applied to both. It really depends what you are studying, I don’t want to read 75 pages of posts. So correct me.

Okay I read some posts.

Here’s my advice. The application forms are very stupid. Especially HKU. Be sure to fill in everything within 2 weeks. They have a tendency to delete your accounts…

And also, after you submit HKU, SCREENSHOT! THE STUPID SYSTEM TAKES YOU TO ANOTHER PAGE WITHIN 5 SECONDS, BUT THAT PAGE CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFO!!! BECAUSE THEY DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT ONCE YOU SUBMIT I KNOW ITS VERY STUPID IVE BEEN THROUGH THIS HOW MANY TIMES I DONT KNOW I FORGOT AND I DONT CARE AND SO SORRY FOR THE CAPS. lol. :slight_smile: Enjoy your applications. It’s gonna be fun.

I’ve heard that the business program at HKU is hard to get into. That leaves me to wonder just how hard is it? And does anyone know anyone who has gotten into it and under what qualifications (satI, gpa, extra-curriculars, etc.) I want to apply and I’m in the US.

If you are competitive for many top US colleges, you have a shot. You don’t have to be a HYP material because being an international is a bit of a hook; it’s extremely competitive for the locals however.
