@Sarthak- The tuition fees of the University that one plans to go on an exchange to has to be born by the student?LIke if one gets full scholarship for that semester in UST…and if he plans to go on an exchange to some other unis, than does he have to pay the tuition fees of that university?

Thank you for your answers! Glad to hear I have a good chance!

@Phoenix_ice I am not certain yet of what courses I wish to take, but I think I will major in Modern China Studies (in order to get competence in this field, I case I should work there for a European, maybe Norwegian, company) and another course like philosophy (a typical arts subject…). I wish to minor in something within media, like Journalism & Media Studies and I will probably take something like Public & Social Administration as well, and some other subjects, I am no completely sure yet;)

@Anand78 Hope your right about waiting time of just a few weeks! A Norwegian girl I know of, who got into the International Business Global Management at HKU, got interviewed and notified near the end of August! I think thats a bit too late

@Sarthak19118 Yeah, not too sure about the reputation of this program. There is, literally, no talk about it on various discussion sites, like this (and no talk about bachelor of arts anywhere, wonder why:P) Seems like most overseas students want to study business or engineering (and locals aswell) Anyways, I think it is the best education within arts option in South-East Asia, (together with National University of Singapores similar program). And when comparing my perception of the respective Unis, their student life and of course, the cities they are located in, HKU is, by far, my first choice (I havent even applied to NUS ) So I hope HKU will be a good preparation for a high-level career in SE Asia!

I see you discuss halls, I have read that Starr Hall is the newest and most international, seems like it would be an interesting hall to stay at:) I mean, play soccer on a global team, it would be great! And probably lots of interesting conversation in the corridors and everywhere there!

I used to read this thread a year back when they discussed last years admissions, nice to see its still alive:)

@ Sarthak
Yes man thats the way to go

and it does suck that its blocked in China ! I hope Facebook and Skype are not blocked !!! And i Hope even more that none of them are blocked in HongKong. !!!

Just forget my hall comment, I kind of assumed it was the HKU halls, but then I read a few pages back, and it seems like people are going to HKUST…

It seems like a great university, science wise, but aside from academic feats, what do you think about it’s location? Its not exactly located in downtown Hong Kong

@AlecDluz-Even i have applied to HKU ( engineering) but i think ill be going to UST…
I think most of us on this thread agree that HKU is overall a better uni currently than UST but UST is better at Science and Tech and has more scope for improvement in the future…
HKU is very prestigious indeed so if i do get an offer ,ill be in a dilemma even though my course is engineering…
Good Luck.:)

aman: I’m not sure mate, but I think the tuition fee would not be charged, however, the flight and living costs would be, so we’ll still have to bear some good amount of money… I dunno, and really as of now we shuldnt worry about it as we’ll go on exchange programs in 2 or 3rd year only…

Alecdluz: And I absolutely agree mate! Hk will not only be a chance to enter the Asian job market but more importantly the Chinese mainland job market too, and as you would know job market in Asia is really hot right now, so Hk seems to me the smarter choice… besides if you just look at the life of Hk and the mix of culture and modernity, Hk is a better pick than Singapore… I dont knw why soo many people are going in for business and engineering only, perhaps cause it thrills them or cause the job market is high or they simply join the herd… however I wanna do engineering cause I loVE IT !!
Moving on to HKUST’s location as I mentioned few threads back, its probably the best campus you could possibly find! Its surrounded by mountains on three sides with ocean on one side, a beach on campus!, and is still 25-30 mins from central Hk, and very well connected… its not the downtown considering Hk is a small place and anywhere in Hk is the main town :)

Dexmax: Unfortunately facebook is blocked too !!! Life just feels empty without some healthy and regular socializing through facebook ! Trust me it sucks! however Hk luckily is more democratic in its outlook than China and everything is legal and available there !!

Anand and ALL: Give HKUST as much time as HKU has been around for and it’ll be as prestigious as HKU, so dont get caught up in the HKU prestige topic… and then HKU is staionary on the rankings whereas HKUST is moving places as fast as the increase in Global Warming, and its as Hot as Global Warming too soo when it comes to picking between HKUST and HKU, the choice is easy [No pressure] hahaha

As many of you have been to HK before, there is a general issue I would like to know about.

IS RACISM PREVALENT IN HK LIKE IN AUSTRALIA?

Nothing against, but my parents and relatives are very worried about the fact that I have applied abroad and after all the incidents that took place against INDIAN(particularly) in Australia they are very upset and tensed.

I totally agree with them and consider their worries to be just because no Mother nor Father would spend heavily on their child’s education where their is no security of life at all. They would regret that decision throughout their life.

I had a relative visiting my house today and he has been to many places around the world. When I gave him the news of my admission he was happy but instead put forth few question to me.

-Dont you think doing your ug from India would be better?
-Does the University guarantee placement after the program?
-If you want to work in India later on then why are you going abroad and not trying in INDIA itself? We have good MBA universities in INDIA like IIMs(I want to do an MBA after ugs)

I could answer all but am not too confident and sure about it.
Please help me out guys…!!

aman: I cn understand your parents’ concern but Hk is NOTHING like that !! Hong Kong has TONS of Indians and they all live there happily, few of my friends from Lucknow live there now and LOVE it! Besides there are atleast 30 foreigners on every street soo its really probably one of the most racially and culturally diverse place you would have been to Tell your parents Sarthak say Hk is not only safe but Also Awesome !!

Doing your ug from India makes sense if sitting down with books is all you want, there will be fun in Indian Unis too but the level of tht fun would be nothing like the fun at HKUST, besides the method of education at Hk is completely different for the better… if you think you can get exposure, awesome labs, experience of living abroad, and many more things in India then go with an Indian Uni
-I dunno about the placements but u should really be going for Masters after ug and then do that from India if you want…
-Well it is true that u wanna work in India so it makes sense to got o Uni in India but do you not wanna get any exposure and feel of other cultures in Life ? Its too early in life to decide where you wanna work in! give it a shot maybe you’ll change your mind, and then getting into IIM and IITs is like sooo much more studies again for competitive examinations! give it a thought mate…

lemme knw if you want me to convince you any further… and pls dnt let uncles and aunties talk you into the “hamari sanskriti” and “videsh ki burai” talks!! They might be correct but thts only 1 out of 20 times, and dude you are freaking 17-18, how can you not wanna experience more cultures and places and people from up close! and then giving up a chance to be with awesome people at HKUST like me ! lol…

amanagaral,

Racism exists everywhere. But the kind of racism in HK never result in violence like you see in Australia. The kind of racism in HK is more about elitism, not hatred.

aman: Exactly what Sam Lee said, dude we are Indians we’ll be exactly that wherever we go! And we are amazing people, I believe the best kind of people in the whole world! And some people will acknowledge tht, some wont, but as they say ‘****** Bags are everywhere!’ And besides there is racism even in India! Some North Indians hate South Indians, some love them, some South Indians hate North Indians and some love them! Its a part of life and till we dont face it and learn to combat it, we havent seen much in life! Besides whats the fun about living in your comfort zone throughout your life, right ?
P.S.: Hk is awesome :)

For those from the US:

I did a summer research at HKUST. The food at HKUST is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> dorm food in the US. Actually, it’s better than a lot of restaurants here, not just the dorm food. So if nothing else, enjoy the food while paying a lot less. :)

Sam Lee: I’m ok with eating beef being semi-atheist, but i’m asking this Q on behaf of the other Indians on this thread, is there a problem there with beef/pork, as in cn u easily get food without beef/pork? cause here in Shanghai you can get food without beef/pork easily, however, sometimes it is diff to tell whether there is any of it in the food! and some people will be pur veggies …
And one last Q, how r the research facilities there? well-equipped labs? and accessibility for undergrads?

yes, it’s easy. one of my friends doesn’t eat beef and just got back from there; he’s telling me all the awesome food he had and how much he’s still missing them. he got the best thai he ever had (i.e. none of the thai he had in the US was anything close). if u are into sushi/seafood, u’ll be in heaven. he had some of the seafood/sushi he never had and doesn’t know what to call them. there are also a lot of veggie restaurants (there are many people that are into some variations of buddism).

of course i know what he’s talking about but i mentioned him because he doesn’t eat beef. i, on the other hand, eat everything.

oops…forgot about research facilities.

it’s very difficult to generalize since i didn’t really tour various labs…etc. in general, the campus was well-kept; the interior of the buildings was pretty good also. the two things which i felt weren’t as good as those at my college were the athletic facilities (the locker room was subpar) and the computers in my lab (a little slow). but my alma mater was (and still is) one of the most well-endowed in the US. HKUST probably compares quite well with many others here. i thought the library was impressive with the glass wall allowing full oceanview. they could be a little easy on air-conditioning though (not sure why they didn’t want to cut some energy cost easily)!

@amanagarwal - Wow that is one terrible situation you’ve got going there! But that wouldn’t stop you from going to a completely new and exciting place. My parents are Filipino and seem to have something against every ethnicity (even our own). They hate that I want to go abroad and aren’t excited for me at all. But I’m tired of my life being so restricted to my comfort zone, yknow? I’ve got an opportunity, so I plan on taking it!

I have quite a number of Indian friends and they are all fun to be around; funny and smart. I love them to death and none of my friends mind when I try to imitate their accent–but that’s as far as I’ll go when it comes to “making fun” anyhow. (I hope you guys don’t mind haha). Accents are cool :D.

I don’t see why racism goes on, ever.

One can favor and comment on the pros of an ethnicity–appearance, athleticism (DUDE! WINTER OLYMPICS FIGURE SKATING S. KOREA<3), intelligence, culture. But it’s just wrong to seriously degrade. Sad and wrong, I tell you!

@sam lee - HAHAHA one of my favorite things about the Hong Kong culture is the dim sum. But my friends that have gone there all tell me you haven’t had dim sum until you’ve gone to Hong Kong. How exciting!

Sathark sounds prrretty excited for HKUST xD.

Sam Lee: I think all the Indians on this thread would be happy to know that… As for me, I can eat pretty much anything too, soo I should enjoy Hong Kong, just like I’m enjoying Shanghai
The facilities sound to be quite manageable, and then again it is def as good as the facilities in the Indian Unis, if not better…
As far as the weather is concerned I think the summer shuldnt concern me much having lived in Lko in India and the winters I shall be well equipped for too having lived in Shanghai…
Thanks for the info!

phoenix_ice: Exactly, this opportunity is worth taking, and then if not now thn whn else !?!
and yes Yuna Kim is simply magnificent this year!
And yes again I am pretty excited for HKUST, haha…
:)

Hi guys, been abandoning this thread for quite some time. SORRY.
Grats to those who’ve already got their offers.
Just wanna ask will it take a longer time to give offers to those who applied GB rather than BBA or it should take the same time?
I’m abit worried now as aman got his within a week while I haven’t heard anything from UST yet. :(

Aman,
dude you have the same exact issues I had while chosing my uni… Though I made it to every Indian uni with the exception of 10k rank in iit:(… I applied as a backup and then researched about hkust… And seeing the rankings, feedbacks… here I am…
And yeah racism is almost nill… U have all kind of people on campus. U have te exact plans as me… Hkust ug+ MBA (mayb from india) u can apply to iims through foreign candidates quota ie. Through GMAT ;)

anndaprincess: You wanna email them inquiring the same, there seems to be something wrong, so yeah just email them or call them…

niksy_nik7: Hey since you have made a plan on this, would you happen to know how long it takes to get a MBA degree from IIM? I finally wanna do Ergonomics after Mechanical Engineering, but if the MBA is a year or two then I might do that before my work experience…

@All- Thanks for convincing me on this issue mates.I was really messed up yesterday about it.

@Sarthak- Thanks mate.I truly believe that racism exist every where…even in INDIA…no doubts.Nice to hear that Hk is so vibrant and diverse.:)

Ya,according to my culture I am supposed to be a pure veggie. But who cares.I see many people who hide it from their family and eat non-veg.But i believe that one should tell them and eat.I dont know if their family would put restrictions or not, but if they dont, u enjoy the food more and stay carefree of being caught.I eat non-veg but with few exceptions.I dont eat BEEF/PORK but chicken/mutton/seafood would do.So i guess i would have no probs regarding my feeding issues.;)(Feel Sorry for those veggies who dont even try some of the best dishes on earth);(

@ pheonix -I totally agree to you mate. Its not always about race and ethnicity.People remember you by the kind of person you are.:)Nice to hear your decision.

anndaprincess -Have you had your phone interview?I dont know about the time it may take but i guess you should write a mail to them about your application status.

@niksy_niks - Ya I guess your and mine future plans are quiet the same. While viewing your posts I had come to know about it and that we both had the same doubts.Nice to hear about your decision about going to hkust.Hope to meet you soon.
