@rebecca-congrats Rebecca!!! yh lots to think about but do let us know if we can help you out in any way…A lot of us passed through the same dilemma over the past few weeks!!

@niksy-nik7-please share some facts about your life at UST…all of us would love to know!!!

@rebecca-Congrats!! Which course?Did you apply to HKU too??If so, are you gonna wait for their reply b4 making the deposits to UST??I have to reply b4 1st march so i shall make the deposits and not wait for HKU…

@niksy-niks - I totally agree with Anand…We all out here would like to learn about life at UST:)

niksy_nik7: I am a future Indian HKUSTian so where about in India are u from? what course are you doing and what year? thats a lot of Q’s! lol

Rebecca: CONGRATS!! Yet another HKUSTIAN to join the gang! I shall c u on campus too!
and as I told aman, if you do plan to go visit the Uni before or something, lemme knw too so I cn plan a trip around the same time too…

gogounivs: 35 including 3 additional is still a decent score mate! You might just make it…

smartchap: Yes I applied early to ALL my Unis in Hk and in States and Uk… I think I was done around October last week if not before… even September 1st week for some …

hello everyone…
if you go a few pages back in this thread,
you will see i had similar doubts as you guys or even more…
Switching to UST is just like switching to a mac…
after i made the switch i realized what piece of crap i was using before switching… ;)//
yup…hkust is much more practical than the indian education…and not just mugging up.
and here the school level is just as same the indian level or maybe even higher.
Everything is very flexible.
i have similar plans as you guys …ie. work in india later on…
HKUST is a relatively new uni…
but at the pace its moving…i woudn’t be surprised if its at the top in asia in a few years…
though it is currently ranked 4th in asia by qs.
the campus is just awesome…its like a resort…

@sarthak:As u know,I applied just a week back. So,will they judge me on my Board results which come out in May and gimme their final decision then?

I just got an offer from CUHK. Minimum requirement 5 for each subject and 35 total without the 3 points (I get 0 anyway xD I HATE TOK AND EE LOL)

Hey ppl ! sorry I was a bit busy therefore could not catch up.
I now totally favour hkust over hku.
Although the rooms in HKUST are really tiny. Thats the only bad part. Their engineering is awsome with undergrad research opportunities. The ONLY nanoelectronics laboratory in Hongkong is in HKUST ! They have awesome lecture halls and what not.
However I think HKU is more vibrant and lively and active. In the end depends on ur taste whether you prefer peace and quite(hkust) or you like a very lively place(hku).

Anyhow those who are interested can search on youtube! they have tonnes of videos of hku and hkust !

This is just a comment. But there are a lot of Indians on this thread currently! Nothing against, just feeling I can’t contribute any helpful advice about the application process.

Anyone else from North America or the Philippines? Engineeringgggggggggg?

@rebecca - I have to reply by the same date, too! Such a dilemma, indeed. But Niksy’s post is very encouraging. Though I’m still scared about competition :|

As it currently stands, HKUST is better by a matter of overwhelming opinions. (;

Oh and a question. How much are you budgeting for your year after tuition? Including books, supplies, living expenses, etc. ? I know it really depends on your lifestyle, but just an approximation of what you’re expecting would be appreciated.

I am a Norwegian student, currently studying my last year of upper secondary school here in Norway. This fall, I wish to pursue a Bachelor of Art Degree at the University of Hong Kong.
I would greatly appreciate it, if someone could tell me what my chances are for being accepted at this program.

Speaking fluent: English, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and intermediate German.
IELTS overall band score: 8.0
Grades: 6 or 5 in every subject (20), on a 1-6 scale, with 6 denoting exceptionally high degree of competence, and 1 = very low degree of competence (a nice way of saying failure:)
Played soccer for 7 years.
Participated in EU-sponsored Comenius project abroad, application based, only 10 participants from each country. (goal of project was to enhance understanding of cross-cultural communication and cultural differences)
3 letters of recommendation.
Had 4 different part-time/summer jobs since the age of 15, ranging from cleaner to construction worker.

If someone could give me some feedback on whether of not you thing I will be accepted, it would be very helpful, as HKU really is the only option in HK for a Bachelor of Arts. (I mean, can I relax and assume that I will get accepted, or should I start looking for other alternatives outside HK as well?)

@rebecca - I estimated around $2,000USD/yr for room and board, and $4,000USD/yr for other expenses taking into account that I don’t spend a lot as a person in general because I’m from what might be considered to be a lower middle-class family. The killer expenses are going to come from traveling back and forth from Hong Kong to the United States.

@alecdluz - What program are you planning on being in? Your chances appear really good given your extracurrics and testing. But again, I don’t know much about the UK edu system. But HEY! It would be exciting for you to come (;

niksy_nik: Thats awesome to hear!! I do know few people in HKUST, one of them is doing Global Biz, and one is doing Mechanical Engineering…

smartchap: cool… do well in the boards!

MrPropoganda: Congrats on that! although you should try for HKUST since majority of us here have established that it is the BEST place to go to :)

theBigchees121: that question should never even have been open for debate! HKUST is def better than HKU, and thts like a fact, u cant change it! just cnt!

Dexmax234: how vibrant a University depends on the people you hang out with and who you are as a person to be honest… and with me going to be in HKUST this Sep, I think HKUST is going to get very vibrant (alliteration enhances the exaggeration!)… as vibrant as HKU if not more!! I would have accessed youtube, but then I live in CHina and youtube is blocked! SUCKS!

rebecca1234: I dont know if this question applies to me or not, but i’ll answer it anyways… I think my parents are planning on giving me around 250,000 Hkd per year, considering the housing and tuition together will be around 120,000, the remaining will be my annual budget I guess, really need to work on a defined budget I guess, not even sure if that is enough for the whole year!! and i just realized since the first year is full scholarship I would have the entire money to myself !! awesome, I might save that for postgrad or spend it on exchange programs and traveling… About the residence even i’m not sure yet, am waiting for them to email me the details and forms et cetera…

AlecDluz: The grades are certainly one of the strong ones, no doubt! Not too sure about the reputation of this program at HKU, but I dont really see any problem with your admission anyway… certainly do apply!
