Hokie hokie hokie...hi?

Oh well, I really want to go to VT engineering...but I have low GPA and average SAT 1 & 2 scores (700+ math)..can I still get in??? I heard GPA takes 2/3 of admission process...
is it rolling admission?

no the app. is due january 15th. and that is probably true about GPA because there are no essays or recommendations.

thanks a lot jtran10, it's 3:00am here.. i gota go sleep good night

13 hour time difference, wow. that's what i call an international applicant

bump. anyone besides duke want to give some input?

are there lots of int'l students? how many??

VT considerably outranks UVA in Engineering. Many have turned down Eng. at UVA in favor of VT. One of the main reasons is the facility. VT is state of the art and UVA is sadly, falling behind with poor labs and other facilities. Duke, you obviously are a UVA fan. Perhaps you are still hurting from the football loss? UVA is very concerned about the powerhouse that Tech. has become academically. There is sufficient evidence that UVA is very threatened by Tech's progress in many areas. If you go to a UVA bookstore...you will see many T-Shirts that put down Tech. For example.....Friends Don't Let Friends Go To Va Tech. VA Tech have very few if any. The worst I have heard anyone at Tech. say about UVA is that they call it the "little school down the road". Tech is not threatened by UVA but clearly UVA is very threatened by Tech. and for good reason. Go to Tech. It is a great school with excellent potential.

Interesting, very interesting

interesting,, very interesting,,

i'm just reporting the reputation around here and what actual people who live in virginia think. i never said vtech wasn't good in engineering, only that it sucks in business. if u go to vtech u have to do engineering cuz thats all its good for, otherwise no one will care and trust me if virginian people don't care about a business degree from vtech than other people wont' care either.

thanks, you're so knowledgable

ahem

USNews Best Undergraduate Buisiness Programs 2005:

University of Pennsylvania
.
.

Virginia Tech
.
.

University of Connecticut
.
.

James Madison University

.. VTech IS competitive engineering. Architecture as well. Buisiness well... I think of the preppy kid who just wants a flashy major name. But thats just me ;)

What are your SAT scores? Thats pretty much all they look at .. GPA/SAT.

40 is not good by any means. The op can get into better. And btw, u trust a guide or do u trust actual people that go there?

Come to virginia and ask around, u think u know about a college by reading a ranking? how about living in a place ur whole life then argue.

and yea vtech's good in engineering and the like, not in law/business/medical/etc.

Duke: I do live in Virginia and have for 25 years. I do know about the reputation of the Virginian schools. It is ever changing. For instance......William and Mary (the second college and the first university established in the US) was by far the crown jewel of the Virginian schools ten years ago. Now, due to the schools small size and lack of state funding.... it has fallen behind UVA in its reputation because it is losing the battle to employ the best professors. It cannot pay professors what UVA or other private schools with large endowments and a large pool of very generous alumni can. Twenty years ago UVA did not enjoy the prestige that it does today. They always had a good law school but the undergraduate program was not that exceptional. Most older alums, around Virginia, often state they would never get into UVA today if they applied. With Virginia Tech, its reputation and selectivity rate has gown tremendously in the last 8-10 years. Students who could get into Tech four years ago cannot get in now. With the added benefit of football and the enormous fan base.... especially since Michael Vick, the desire to attend Tech and the money donated from faithful alums has sharply increased. Many programs, at Tech, have benefited from this surge in popularity and funds. With all things, money is a defining ingredient that makes a superior academic program: the best facilities, the best professors, and the best students result. It does take time....but this type of institutional building does impact the quality of schools and it goes both ways. Don't count Tech out. As I said, it has a lot of potential. I did not see that UVA was listed on you US News Business list. I do know that the University of Virginia is a very good school. Readers from other parts of the country do not know what we Virginians know about our schools so it is misleading to present your enormously biased view. What others reading these entries should understand is that UVA and Va Tech have a very big rivalry going and it can get very nasty. Given that Tech went to the Sugar Bowl this year and UVA lost to Tech and did not attend a bowl game as important.....there are a lot of egos suffering around the Old Dominion. And another thing..... US News is driven by the numbers game and the manipulation of schools to get their selectivity rating sky high. It is not always indicative of an excellent program so I do not go by what I read in their reports. What I am trying to communicate to jtran is to keep an open mind about Tech. And do not listen to a lot of nasty biases rooted in feelings of inferiority or fear of being matched or over taken. Do your homework ….Check out the program and compare it to others. See what is planned for the future. (At the rate of construction on Tech’s campus, I would venture a guess that the business school may have some improvements to brag about. Look at the rates of employment after graduation and salaries. Good luck with your search and Go Hokies!

boysmom- thank you very, very much. that was definitly some interesting info that you shared, and I am trying to root out the bias of the uva people when reading this board.

i'm going to carnegie tepper business.. uva bias? lol.....

enjoy ur non existant future as a business major in vtech

ok ill be sure to do that

I live in Virginia, and i'm not planning on attending UVA or VTech (UIUC or Purdue for engineering, accepted into both)

UVA definately the better of the two (by far), but VTech is no slouch.. know plenty of buisiness people going there. however depending on your SAT scores ... I think you can do better. Especially since you're out of state, really no reason to pay that big tuition.

my sat's arent that high 1280, and compared to going to school up north, VT is really cheap. And if i applied to uva i woudlnt get in

pretty much go to UCONN
