Honors

Where do you live?

I got the email about the five programs, but no invitation came in the mail today.

I just talked to admissions – they were rude and vague – didn’t actually answer whether i was invited – just said highly selective students get it only – wait until the end of the week – blah, blah, blah – totally unimpressed and disappointed with shortness of response . . .

I live in Maryland. Nothing in the mail so far, but we got no mail today because of the snow. I’m not sure what to make of the e-mail. I believe honors is super selective – I think I read only 300 students are in honors, but maybe more are invited who end up attending elsewhere?

In defense of admissions, the entire Honors process is completely out of their hands…

Like you Tarheel, S received that email also about choosing from those 5 opportunities and ranking them. We lived in Blizzardville DC and have not received any mail this week…

chickee – where do you live . . . please . . .

Thanks . . .

“Bugs”

Oh, sorry, I didn’t know you were asking me that. I live in North Carolina… a couple of hours away from UNC.

Chickee,

Thanks so much, and congratulations to you :)

“Bugs”

I never got an email. Is it safe to say I will not be chosen for Honors or are they different?

The e-mail says that the sent e-mail survey is different from honors.

I just got mine today, so for those of you who don’t have it yet there’s still hope  Also, it was postmarked 2/09 so clearly it wasn’t mailed last week.

Ah I got invited into honors and i really wasn’t even expecting it!!!

I live in PA btw.

S received his today in DC! Postmarked February 9.

Congrats guys. When I got my invitation I had no idea how selective it was to be invited!

I took three honors classes last semester, and they were great. Awesome professors and very engaging discussions. I learned more in that semester than I did in all of high school. This semester I’m in more of the giant lecture-style classes, and I’m not learning much… but it’s partly because I didn’t choose my schedule well. My classes are too easy, and as nice as that sounds, it’s harder to get motivated or engaged in them. Honors classes will challenge you. It might be easier to get an A, but you definitely work for the A, and you’ll be proud of it at the end of the semester.

Ah, interesting input OldWell. If possible, could you speak a little bit more as to how you choose UNC Honors (were you looking at any other schools)? Perhaps also any other differences between being an honors or a non-honors student?

One thing I would like to stress is that not being in the Honor’s Program at UNC is not the end of the world, and it definitely should not be the reason not to attend here. I was not accepted into the Honor’s Program upon my admittance, and I honestly did carry a chip on my shoulder for a little bit. However, I applied spring semester of my first year here, and was accepted. I actually took honor’s classes before being in the program itself. That is a key component of the Honor’s Program at UNC. Anyone can take honor’s classes, it is just that Honor’s students have first shot at signing up for classes.

Graduating with Honors is completely independent of the Honor’s Program. Any student can do research and write an Honor’s thesis.

packerfan, do you concur with OldWell that Honors classes are easier to get an A in…if you do the work?

I do for the most part. However, there can be exceptions. I took an Honors Chemistry class last semester and did not do well in it for some reason. Now I can never say for certain, but I feel like I would have gotten an A if I had been in the regular section of one of the classes. But of the other 5 honors classes I have taken, I received A’s in each of those.

So a few more questions for packerfan:

1) It sounds like Honor Classes are not different subjects then but just Honors versions of regular classes. Or are there some honors classes that are not offered as regular classes?

2) Do have any idea of how hard it is to get into the honors program after the first semester? Did you know people who applied and got turned down? If so, what things do you think are important to get in as a current student? Is it based on essay-writing again, grades in your first semester, teacher’s recommendations in your first semester, or whether or not you took any honor courses in your first semester?

3) Is it fairly easy to sign up for honor classes during CTOPs or is it slim pickings?

And a question for Oldwell and packerfan:

1) Do you have any particular honors classes/teachers that you recommend?
