Hopeful UC-UC Transfer

I am going to be a second year at UC Davis and I want to transfer to UC Irvine. I would want to transfer to UC San Diego but I know I don't stand a chance. My GPA isn't the best; I currently have a 3.4 GPA as a biological sciences major from my 3 quarters at Davis. However, due to a family loss, I got a D and F in the summer courses I enrolled in at 2 local CCs (1 course per CC). They are UC transferrable and were just used for GEs. Both CC's say that if I retake the course, my first grade will be alleviated so that's what I will be doing. I believe for when I transfer, my failing grades will be factored into my GPA.

I will be bumping up my GPA this quarter and I will be retaking the CC class I got a D in during this fall online to replace my failing grade. So after fall, I will hopefully get an A in the course and once I resubmit my grades, my GPA will be much better. I plan on retaking the other course at a later time. I finished my UCI prerequisites besides organic chemistry which I will finish by summer 2012, and I will also have my GEs finished by then.

I know my chances aren't the best but does anyone have any advice on how to better my chances of getting in? I checked the UC Stat Finder and in 2009, the chances for my statistics were not too low. I believe it was a 71% chance of people who had a 3.3-3.4 GPA got in. I really am unhappy at UC Davis and I just want to leave.

I’m applying as UC-UC transfer as well, going from UCSC to UCLA (hopefully). Community college classes don’t factor into the UC gpa, so don’t worry too much about that, however if you’re going to report those 2 classes on ur application, It’d be better to see an A rather than a D. Biological sciences is always a competitive major at UCs so I’m not too sure on your chances there. This fall quarter will be the last quarter that goes into your transfer application, so if you can, try to aim for a 4.0.

^^^The classes will be factored into the OP’s GPA. Furthermore, even if he retakes the class, he’ll still have to list the D, it’ll just be noted that it was retaken and the only the better grade will be factored into his GPA.

Do you mean they only get factored into the admission gpa? Because I’ve taken classes at a CC and im pretty sure they don’t affect my UC gpa at all.

Yes they get factored into admissions GPA. They will also be factored into your cumulative GPA if you apply to any grad or professional school.

For intercampus transfer, you must complete as many of your major prerequisites as possible (preferably all of them; for the destination UC, not your current UC) in order to be competitive for admission consideration.

To minimize delays in graduation, you should complete the general education (lower-division) requirements at your campus prior to the end of your sophomore year. The UC reciprocity agreement allows you to use the requirements from your campus to fulfill the requirements at the other UC campus. You may still successfully transfer without completing these requirements; however, you may be required to comply with the lower-division requirements at the destination UC after transfer and that could prolong your time to graduation.

Hm I had no idea that my community college courses would count into my admissions gpa. That’s kind of disappointing news to me since i got a B in 1 class at a CC and its going to drop my gpa haha. Thanks for the correction though shannon.

Yeah, but luckily for you a B won’t drop it that much and it’s only your admissions GPA. If you apply to jobs that want to see a transcript you don’t really need to include the extra transcript. But for admissions, you need to include every single grade including Ws and grades you retook. The worst is for law school-even if you retook a class to replace a grade, both grades will be factored into your GPA.
