We're visiting next month and I was wondering if anyone could recommend some hotels/motels. We will have a car but I don't know what the parking is like, so it would always be a plus to be within walking distance.

Thanks for any input!

I just found a list on the UMinn website, but any comments still welcome!

One more update, the Days Inn on the E side of campus (University & Washington) and the Historic Faculty House in Dinkytown seem like good possibilities. Anyone stayed at either of these or have comments about which area close to campus (West bank, East, Dinkytown) that would be nice to stay in as far as restaurants, etc.?

When we are in the area, the Big Ten Restaurant & Bar is our favorite. It is just a dive bar, but they have the best subs anywhere. I’d also recommend Punch Pizza, they have been written up in some national magazines as having some of the most authentic “Neopolitan style” pizza you can find. We’ve been there a couple of times and it is really good.

Wow, I just tried the Radisson and the don’t have any rooms for when we’re there, hope there’s nothing big going on then. Thanks for the tips on restaurants!

Hi, I have a PhD from the U and my son is a dual-enrolled high school senior there, we live in the Minneapolis suburbs.

In addition to the Radisson (spendy) and the Days’ Inn (reasonable, but another three blocks away) on the East Bank, there is also a Holiday Inn on the West Bank, at what is called Seven Corners, which is just over a block from the Law School and the rest of the West Bank.

You could also try getting a hotel downtown and taking a bus to the U of M campus (incidentally, people refer to the University of Minnesota simply as “The U”).
But without knowing more of your plans, I don’t want to give too many details.

If Radisson is sold out, the next full service hotel closest is, as mentioned, Holiday Inn on the West Bank. In addition to the location convenience, you should be able to get shuttle service from the hotel to cover the full campus if you don’t feel like walking (though the campus is walkable, depending on your willingness). The Seven Corners area also will have several casual dining options and is near the Light Rail Train for service to Mall of America and core of downtown Minneapolis.

Days Inn is also on campus on the East Bank, but will be your limited service option. Not sure on shuttle service.

After these hotels, you’ll be looking primarily downtown (further away and probably more expensive, but not out of the question) or suburbs (less expensive but you’ll drive everywhere and have to pay for parking every time you come to campus - which may cancel any savings on hotel rate).

With any of these hotels, when you call to make reservations ask for a University of Minnesota rate as all these hotels compete for that business. You may do better at getting a U of M rate by calling the hotel locally as opposed to a national reservations center.

Give some thought to the Aloft. I think they are part of the W hotel chain. It is an up an coming area with several ethnic restaurants and also the Depot indoor skating rink (you can rent skates). I also think there is a hotel attached to the Depot on Washington and 3rd.

Hotel attached to Depot - shows as an extended stay, but I know my kids went to overnight birthday parties at this location because of the water park and skating rink. <a href=“You are being redirected...”>You are being redirected...;
