I am going to be a returning sophomore and I got assigned Kinsolving, which was my last choice. What I don't understand is how they give freshmen the dorms that were my top preferences (Roberts, Brackenridge, Moore-hill, Prather), yet I got stuck in Kinsolving. I chose to be put on a wait list. Have any of you returning students done this?

My ds got his first choice, Andrews. You can request a change until April 19th (I think that’s the right date). Since freshmen assignments are not done until summer, I would call the housing dept. and speak with them. Getting your last choice as a sophomore really does not make sense.

I submitted my housing app two months ago and I wasn’t given any choice for selecting any dorm choices… was I supposed to get this choice? I’m a freshman btw.

Samster, this is from the UT Housing website regarding returning residents:

“Please note that your housing priority was set the first year you lived on campus. Applying early will not improve your housing priority.”

My guess is that they block out a certain number of rooms in each dorm for incoming freshmen, but I would certainly call the housing office and ask that question.

roby - have you received your housing contract yet? If so, you should be able to go on “my housing” and put in your preferences. You have until July 1st to make those choices. If you have not received and accepted your housing contract (and paid your $300), then that’s why you don’t see that yet. The deadline for current students (and room assignments) is earlier than for freshmen.

I know they do it by the FIRST $50 payment, and our earliest date was march 2009. I didn’t think march was so late that I would get my last choice though! I sent housing an e-mail and I’ll call them if I don’t get a reply e-mail. Even if they do allot rooms for freshmen, shouldn’t I still get preference? I really don’t want Kinsolving

I’m going to be an entering freshman in the fall, but I was assigned Kinsolving as well, so maybe I’ll see you there! It was also my last choice, and I’m a little surprised that I wasn’t assigned one of my top choices (Moore-Hill, Prather, Brackenridge, and Roberts)

(Oh, the only reason I know is because I’m rooming with a returning sophomore next year and I am listed as her roommate in her assignment)

samster_72, you had me worried that I had missed something when I paid my housing deposit!

@QueenofEverythin

Thanks! I haven’t received an admissions decision yet (I meant to say that I’d be a freshman next year…oops!) and therefore I haven’t gotten a contract… now I understand the process :)

I tried my luck and applied for a single dorm, but didn’t get my wish (I selected Jester East, Jester W, San Jack, Duren…) However, I was assigned a renovated floor in Jester East with a connecting bath, so I’m not entirely disillusioned with the housing system. I am surprised that they didn’t give you your first-choice dorms considering you are a returning student and have priority. Additionally, the dorms you enumerated aren’t popular dorms whatsoever, so I have no idea what went wrong there.

samster_72-- I’m the same year as you (will be a returning sophomore). Yes, they do make priority based on the first $50 deposit you made. For our class, I paid mine in mid december 2008 (got my third choice, moore-hill), most of the people who got their first choices (usually san jac or duren) paid in october/november 2008. The $50 deposits acceptance opened in august 2008 so if you paid in march 2009, you were kinda late so that’s probably why you still got your last choice even if you’re a returning student. For this upcoming year, I got my second choice (duren). You still have time to change it if you want though

HoustonLonghorn-- actually, moore-hill is probably the 3rd or 4th most requested dorm after san jac and duren because of word of mouth that it’s a great place. of course, everyone has different preferences as to what they want in and out of a dorm

I’m having the same problem as you! I am a returning sophomore and I paid my deposit and application fee, etc. But they put me in the same dorm as I’m currently living in right now which is making me mad. I didnt have my current dorm as my preference. I already put myself on the waitlist. I really wanted to live in San Jacinto , Roberts, or Prather. Do you know if I can talk to housing about this? I’m finding the Housing Assignment system at UT ridiculous.

Iambored: in which dorm are you living?

@samster_72: I’m living in Simkins near the stadium and I hate it here- It’s so far away from the library and all the main places to eat that sometimes I feel unsafe walking at 2 a.m. in the morning back from the library all the way to my dorm.

bump (10 char)

My daughter is planning to room with a friend that did pay her $50 housing early last fall. The problem is, we didn’t! The girls have both recently submitted their housing applications (along with the $300 payment), indicating their roommate preference as each other. Their dorm selections are as follows: San Jac, Duren, Brackenridge, Littlefield and Moore-Hill. What are the chances that they will be placed in their first choice…San Jac?

This should be fine. Housing goes by the earlier of the two roommates. Her being later doesn’t hurt you at all; she is piggybacking on the earlier status of her roommate.
