Housing Assignments

Thanks for the info!
I’d also like to know how many first-years are at Severance…
Thanx!

There are about 25-35 first years in Sev.

when you say a dorm room is medium sized do you mean in comparison to the other dorms in the building or campus wide…?

@kickit,
in your case (in stone-d), i meant medium sized.
i would say that in stone-d and the tower complex room sizes vary a lot. in munger there is a bit more variation in room sizes for first-years as well.

the new dorms are very uniform, except for a few minor differences. likewise with the quad.

what about claflin? (i know there’s an old thread on it but i’d appreciate any new info/insight). are the triples big enough?

In general, all the triples at Wellesley are big enough to fit three people and all that furniture that goes along with three people. I wouldn’t worry about it that much. Some rooms will need a bit more creativity when arranging furniture than other rooms, but you all will fit!! I have seen some other schools’ triples where it’s basically a double turned into a triple and it’s not a pretty sight – you won’t get that in a triple at Wellesley.

The thing I would caution about, especially when living in a triple, is over-packing. You don’t have to bring your entire closet with you. Remember, in a triple you will most likely be splitting two closets for three people. Be nice and split up the closets and dressers evenly.

With old buildings like Tower, and Claflin, the quality of the room really depends on the specific room, so there are lots of very different rooms as far as triples go. When I was filling out the suite lottery forms sophomore year, there were about 13 rooms I ranked ahead of the one in Tower I got, many of them in Claflin.

Do you happen to know the clearance under the beds? Am thinking about under the bed storage containers for out of season clothes.

Depending on where you are, you will have different types of beds as far as how much you can change the height of each bed. Severance and Stone-Davis have beds that you can adjust a lot … multiple different heights. The rest of the reshalls I’ve seen have beds that are either “short” or “tall” You can also flip the bed if you want to. Based on my beds, I will say that the “short” version of the bed is just under 1 foot.

I have these under the bed storage containers:
[The Container Store > Our Long Underbed Box with Wheels](http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=71227&PRODID=72365)

I can fit one of those under my bed with some room on top, but two stacked up on each other just barely doesn’t fit, sadly. The height on that is 6.5 inches.

whats Bates 420 like?

pretty much all the doubles in bates are about the same size – all the new dorms are built basically the same way in that all the rooms are very uniform. i will say that bates doubles are among the largest on campus so congrats on getting a big room!

And some more about Claflin please?

Also, I was wondering if I want to switch after the “room freeze”, do I have to find someone who is willing to switch with me? And, do I have to stay in the same dorm? If I ever have a pick of any dorm (maybe next year, heh) wich one is “the best”? :)

Hi! I have a different question about McAfee.
Are the floors hard wood or carpeted?
Also how many freshmen doubles are on the third floor? (The floor with rooms starting with 2)

^8 I believe, all the New Dorms are carpeted.

I lived in Bates 420 last year over the summer. As someone who lives in the quad during the year, it was different to have such a large room.

Some of the nicer pluses of Bates were: proximity to the Ville (if you work there, want starbucks, etc), dining hall during the year, separate closets, larger kitchens and more fridges in the common area, cork board things in the room for easy hanging of posters, larger windows, air conditioned TV area, nicer bathrooms (although the quad is getting all of theirs redone), private bathroom on the odd floors, laundry rooms on the even floors.

Some of the things I didn’t really like: carpeted floors (hardwood in the quad is easier to clean and nicer imo), the view (the windows for doubles in Bates face the windows in Freeman and I felt like a voyeur a lot of the time), sort of far from classes in the academic quad, farther from the sports center(although there’s gym equipment somewhere) and the campus center.

McAfee is carpeted.

There are 8 first year doubles on that floor.

lol i found my roommate on CC:) haha anyway I saw little boxes in some of the bathrooms for students to store their bathroom supplies. I was wondering how big these boxes were in Severance (the DOF) so I can get a box to fit! Also, are the dorms carpeted in Sev? And I heard the res has a big sceen TV in it? Is this true?
Thanks

Room Freeze Info: You can do a body to body switch (switch with another person) … this is probably the easiest way to handle changes. You could also switch into an empty room, provided there are any (this is very rare). You do not have to stay in the same res hall.

The “best” res halls: Everyone has their favorites. It’s really up to what you like and where you want to be on campus. There are some res halls that are overall more popular than others, but there are also people who will only live in a particular res hall because they like it so much. Once you come to campus, you’ll figure out what you like and do not like.

that’s awesome!! you already have something in common ;)

Some people have bigger shower caddys than others, and if they don’t end up fitting in the box a lot of people put theirs on top of the shelves. To play it safe, get the smaller plastic type with the holes in them so the water runs out. Something like this will work:
[Bed Bath & Beyond - Clear Shower Tote](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=15768754&RN=182)

These others may be a bit large for the storage areas in the bathrooms, but many people still have them:

[Bed Bath & Beyond - Print Shower Tote](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=118936&RN=182)

Yes! Every res hall has a good sized TV, some res halls have bigger/newer ones than others but they’re all decent sized!

Many people have asked about the types of flooring in each reshall so I thought I would make a master list. I don’t remember what Dower has… and if I made any mistakes, please fix them!!

McAfee: carpet
Bates: carpet
Freeman: carpet
Dower: ???

Stone-Davis: carpet

Tower: wood
Severance: carpet
Claflin: carpet

Shafer: wood
Beebe: wood
Cazenove: wood
Pomeroy: wood
Munger: wood (except single 331A which has carpet)

I have a question about bunking beds…

If my roommate and I decide to bunk the beds, do we get ladders or will we have to climb down on desks and stuff? Do we just bunk the beds by stacking them on top of each other or are they designed so that they can be bunked?
