housing at umich

what would give me the best advantage in getting one of my top picks for housing at michigan? does it matter when i submit my enrollment deposit and housing app? the earlier the better? or is it just random?

It’s done by a lottery. The only thing that will improve your chances of getting anything in particular is joining one of the communities housed in the specific dorms, like the honors program, residential college, etc.

It’s completely random for freshmen year. You get to fill out your preferences as to whether you want to live on the Hill/Central, Bursley, or Baits. And if you want a smoking/non-smoking roommate, substance-free housing, etc.

If you’re in Honors you’re guaranteed a dorm in squad, which is a really nice location… and like TwistedxKiss said, check out the different learning communities. Many of those have specific dorms. I wish I would have done that to have avoided Baits, lol.

if i select central and hill as my top two choices, is there still a good chance i could end up in north?

Yes, pretty good chance unless you are in a learning community housed in central.

[Michigan Learning Communities](Michigan Learning Communities (MLC) | U-M LSA) here’s a little questionnaire thing to help you decide what communities might be a fit for you.

thanks for your help!
