Housing needed

My son just committed to UA and is now (because of his late commital) in need of a room in Ridgecrest. We were told that on May 10th he will be able to log in and hopefully find a room, but if you find a group that needs a roomate before that date, that would be beneficial. He is going to be a true freshman, honors student, in Arts and Sciences, prefers Ridgecrest, bed between 10pm-12am, non-smoker. He did the roomate finder deal, and is waiting on replies. Anybody who can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Have your son go to Facebook and look for the University of Alabama Class of 2014 site. Post that he is seeking a spot in Ridgecrest West or South (North-honors). He just might find someone still seeking a fourth suite mate who is in Ridgecrest. Or he may hear from someone in Lakeside West or Riverside. All three are nice places.

If this does not work, remember he can put himself in a spot and he can move to another dorm at a later date. There will be kids who will decide to go elsewhere following the May 1 deadline. Some will be honors kids who could get different offers or come off the waitlist at a school.

you might want to expand your wishes to say “in need of a room in an honors dorm”.

from watching what has been going on with room picking … ridgecrest seems to be booked.

i have been told that things will free up as people change their minds, etc. but for now … getting ANY honors dorm is key.

we are in the same boat.

^^^

Not a problem to get an honors room. I just talked to housing and they have more beds than there are honors students who still need to choose.

After July 1st, they will let non-honors kids take the leftover rooms.

So, not to worry, any new honors freshman can have an honors room if he/she wants. :)

Yes, Ridgecrest South is full, but Riverside and Lakeside still have a lot of beds. I forgot to ask about the other honors Ridgecrest.

Hmmm. I was just going to ask Mom2collegekids what color her superhero cape is, but I think we all know it is crimson.

^^^

LOL…

Well, when Mike seemed worried that her D might not get an honors room when “her turn” came to choose, I called to find out the vacancy situation. Glad to get the good news. :)

BTW - browsing today and just noticed the housing site has been updated - better pictures of the rooms and detailed pdfs of individual floorplans.

Hey Mom - Any reason why Ridgecrest South filled up first? Just curious for next year…

because it is the newest one.

^^^

yep…It’s the newest one and for some it’s closer to their classes.

Plus, another nice feature is that it has covered parking. If you bring a car, it’s nice not to have it sitting in the sun all day. However, I think Ridgecrest West and East can also park there…and maybe some others in honors…not sure.

I do believe that the kids from Lakeside also can park at the Ridgecrest parking facilities.

anyone know for sure who can park in covered parking. that is a nice plus!

when i went to school freshman wouldn’t get a parking space ANYWHERE NEAR their dorms! you might get a closeish space in later years, but freshman could forget about it.

Another nice feature of Ridgecrest South is the living room between pairs of rooms with bathrooms. I believe this is not the way it is set up in Ridgecrest West or East, though please correct me if I’m wrong. Once Ridgecrest South filled up, the boys were happy with any of the super suites, since they don’t care about the stove versus convection oven or any of the other amenities found in the newer dorms. My son and his roommate wanted Riverside because of the location so they’re happy where they are.

anyone know for sure who can park in covered parking. that is a nice plus!

I don’t think it’s set in stone because it could vary year to year depending on how many kids in Ridgecrest South apply for parking decals. If a lot apply, that might mean only some kids in Ridgecrest West or East could park there, too.

Just to ease the minds of some of you worried about housing, I just went to my son’s housing page, and he does still have a full room. But I am still able to look for spaces. Choosing the option of looking for one space in any hall, there are three spaces in three different honors rooms. One is in Lakeside West, fourth floor. The other two are in Riverside West, second floor, two different rooms. I know Riverside West is honors, because that’s where my son is, but not sure about Lakeside. There is still plenty of room in Paty, but I don’t think that’s honors. When is the next date housing selection is open?

Lakeside West is honors. Lakeside East and Paty are not. Paty is an all-guys dorm. Remember, Montegut, you only see the guy selection, so there might be lots of “girl” rooms still left.

Thanks, momreads. I meant to add that. Thanks for the clarification on the honors, too. Just trying to help out those on this thread that are worried about their kids getting honors rooms.

Current information:
I am in the girls rooms here is what is available for 1 right now numerous rooms in:
Parham Rooms
New Hall Room
Somerville Room

there was one in the 4th floor of Riverside earlier but it is gone now.

they must be holding back some rooms because housing said that they have enough rooms for all that are in honors but haven’t selected a room yet.

That doesn’t seem fair to those of us who got our deposits in early risking losing them if we chose another school later. Like everyone else I would live to be in Ridgecrest. Saving rooms for later deposits at the expense of those that committed appears un fair. Just my thoughts
