Housing Options for Freshmen

Which housing option is the best for Freshmen?

On-campus: for cost, a Unit Triple; for social atmosphere, still main Units (1,2,3), for a guy, Bowles Hall (men's only dorm) is pretty fun place to be; for a calm, more relaxing atmosphere, Clark Kerr is pretty nice place, although its separation from the main campus and its holding of athletes makes it ripe for great parties; Foothill for those who want seclusion (athough lack of RA oversight permits hard partiers to go at it); for females, Stern as a female-only dorm is notable as a very quiet part of campus. I have a corner triple in Unit 3, very roomy; unfortunately, there are only 4 corner triples on every floor on the Units, so if you select a Unit triple, you will most likely get a converted double room. Most people want a Unit double, and it's a fun setup, just not much room to move around.

Off-campus; I recommend Telegraph Commons. You can also try the USCA co-ops, but they mostly house older students, and can get kind of crazy.

Thank you!
Also, what is the difference between suite and "room"?

and the co-ops can be pretty dirty. or maybe i just have a higher standard of cleaniness than most people.

Suites are self-contained compartments with a small common area, rooms and bathrooms. A simple room is just a room with desks and beds, usually lined up on a floor like in the Units. Suites are usually found in Clark Kerr or Foothill.

Depends. Some co-ops are nicer than others. Then again, Cloyne is a run-down fun house. That's where I want to be next year.

I forgot to mention, the smaller co-ops are usually cleaner.

Have you applied for Cloyne yet?

Gave USCA the co-op application this past week. Cloyne is my first choice, and from there I just randomized my prioritization list. I hope Casa Zimbabwe is nicer than last year, because of its large capacity a lot of applicants might be funneled there this year (or that's what I think anyway).

Hope you get what you want. I guess I had a particularly bad experience at one co-op which I will not name, so that made a lasting impression of how co-ops are to me.

I'm FPF, but I didn't put any triple options on my dorm prefs.
My fifth option was a Unit 1 double mini-suite. How rare is it for a frosh to have one of those?

it states that mini suites aren't for freshmen, though this year a ton of freshmen had them, in fact, I believe the majority of them were occupied by frosh

Are the unit housing very loud?

Also, what are the differences between Unit 1, 2, 3?\
What is the Freeborn Hall is a Substance Free Environment about?
Is it weird?

It's pretty much what the title says it is. The hall is dedicated to be substance free; no alcohol, marijuana, etc. It's only weird if you think that idea is weird.

Varies a lot. Quiet hours begin at 11PM on weekdays, 1AM on weekends.

If you want a quiet environemnt, La Loma Foothill is the place to be. Hillside is kinda close to the Greek theater, so its pretty disruptive on Friday nights. Also, in La Loma, do NOT get the buidlings that are close to the Moonies; they never shut the **** up. Try to get Building 2, if that's possible.

Also, some RAs don't strictly enforce these quiet hour times.

Blue Elmo, a couple of questions about Foothill. What are the Moonies and where are they located? Also I saw La Loma (the one across the street, right?) and was a little surprised about the suite they showed us. It had about 8 or 10 dorms, and just seemed like a regular dorm unit with long hallway and a common room at the end. And I assume that's the same price as one of the smaller suites? It seems like some get more bang for the buck while others are paying a 1,000 or so more for basically the same set up as in the unit dorms.

Is Hillside the one that has GETH? I like that area the best. I have to call my friend who used to dorm in Foothill (she graduated a few years ago). She said it was pretty isolated and not very sociable, but I just loved Foothill, and didn't think it all that far from at least some of the courses.

Also, one last question, do the tutors come up to Foothill with any regularity?

Oh, yeah, and thanks for all the other info you've given on Foothill! Great help!

If you want the "college experience" the Units is the place to be.

Well, La Loma suites are usually small. For example, the one I am living in right now has just 4 rooms, 3 doubles and a 1 triple, so nine people total. Hillside, on the other hand, has large suites, my friend who lives there lives with like 20 other people in the suite.
I mean, they are both nice, and Foothill suites are DEFINIETLY quieter than the Units(if you don't count the Moonies), so you can actually study.
Moonies are like religious group that lives in a building right next to La Loma complex. They have a bunch of teenage kids who scream, shout, play swordfighting, skateboard on some weekends etc. But like I said, if you live in Building 2, that problem is gone. In fact, even if you live Building 3, just as long as you get the side opposite to the Moonie house, it's fine.
Otherwise, its a nice place.
Don't know what GETH is.Also, if you are science or engineering major, classes are really close. They have tutors at Hillside, but I don't know if a lot of people utilize them. Mostly, if you need help, you go to your professors' or Graduate Student Instructor's office hours, or you can go to SLC to get tutoring. Hope this was helpful.
