I think you pick five. I don't think you can try to sneak your way around the system w/ under five. They need to give a fair chance and fair consideration to everyone (just b/c you write only like allison, willard, slivka doesn't mean you'll end up with one of those 3 for sure. they might have incentive to move you to like sargent or something for pulling that off)

Haha, alright, thanks again :)

nustudent, is there really something wrong with Sargent? That it "looks like a jail" can't make me ignore its proximity to Tech and the food! You see - I'm going to be both an engineer and... hungry.

Also, where do students usually study? If I end up at Bobb-McCulloch, will I be able to focus when I need to? Also, what is the Engineering library like? Can students study there (I've noticed it's very close to all dorms I'm considering)?

Do you think that living in Elder would limit my contacts with upperclassmen?

Hey lorddragon04.

What's wrong with Sargent:
It's certainly not the most appealing dorm: small rooms and sort of smelly. It has also the reputation of being kind of antisocial. I don't know how to explain. It's just kind of a dreary dorm.

I understand you're going to be an engineer and hungry. There are plenty of dorms close to tech. You'll have to walk more than 7 feet, but I'd hope you can handle it.

I don't live in Sargent, but I have no issues walking the short distance to go eat there or elder. You don't have to live in a dorm with a dining hall (even during winter--I come from California..so it's not like I'm used to snow and ice).

Plus, you'll want to eat at other dining halls, too. There are 6 in all.

You'll have plenty of places to study. If you end up at Bobb, you may have trouble studying in the dorm. Most Bobb study in Ayers CCI (which is where I live). CCI has great study areas and good lighting. You can become a nonres member for CCI and get a key into the building.

Engineering library is good. Lots of people study there.

Yeah, I think living in Elder does limit your contacts with upperclassmen. That's not to say you won't meet them or whatever. You can always get contact through clubs, classes, whatever. However, it's just easier to live in a dorm with upperclassmen in order to meet them.

I just want to say this again:
The size of NU's campus grows smaller as you get used to it. It's really not a big deal to walk anywhere. I enjoy walking to and fro South campus and all.

Plenty of engineers get along even with living in Willard or Allison. Honestly, it's no big deal.

Can someone tell me how many people share a bathroom in Allison? Someone mentioned that the bathrooms in Allison aren't that nice, a bit dirty... what do you mean?

I currently am thinking of Allison, Willard, Shepard, ISRC. Any suggestion for the 5th choice? Does any of you know anything about ISRC?

And just wondering - which few dorms among the above 4 choices have a relatively cleaner environment, cleaner rooms, cleaner bathrooms, better furniture and maintenance? (i am less worry about a dorm being too partyish or antisocial-ish..=P)

Oh and can someone comment on the food at Allison, Willard, Foster Walker Complex and 1835 Hinman? I am curious because some say Allison has the best food while I read from LJ that 1835 has the best food... hmmm?

sargent has the best food

Is it true what they say about Bobb that you cant sleep before 3 am and it is non stop partying. Also can someone comment on Elder Hall.

Thankful,

I think the entire floor of girls share the bathrooms on an Allison floor. So it'll be used by a lot of girls. What I meant by dirty: they're dirty. Nothing anybody can't manage. Just when you're sharing with a lot of people, it's not gonna be the greatest. The maids come and clean every weekday.

ISRC-chances are if you put that on your list, they're going to give it to you (it's unpopular). Well, people I know in ISRC this year didn't like it very much. It's just not one of the favorite dorms. A couple friends moved out of there.

I would suggest this: if you really want Allison, Willard, or Shephard..you're last two choices should be something that's popular and hard to get into. One choice should be Slivka and the fifth choice...maybe Elder or Bobb (not that hard to get into..but popular).

Out of your dorms, Willard has the best maintainance, bathrooms (recently remodeled), furniture, etc. Allison is also a nice looking one. Never been inside Shephard, but I heard it was really good. ISRC..don't hear good things.

About dining hall food:
Don't pick your dorm b/c of dining hall. You can go to any one of them. Especially if you live on south campus, you have more within your vicinity (you'll be close to Hinman, Willard, Allison, and Foster Walker). In fact you'll have to end up eating at Hinman or Foster Walker during weekends (since Allison and Willard are closed then).

Hell, maybe you'll venture north to eat at Elder or Sargent.

If you must know about food:
Everyone has their favorites. I can just tell you, it's a consensus that Willard dining hall is pretty bad.

Most dining halls have the same basic items (pasta, cereal, bagels, ice cream, waffles, etc that are served during breakfast/lunch, and dinner).

My personal take on dining halls:
Allison-nice setting, really good salad bar, food can be hit or miss; it's not a particularly unique food selection (similar stuff gets served in Sargent, Hinman, Foster Walker East, Elder). Friday nites are Hot Cookie bar nites. People really love this.

Willard-horrible food; nice lounge to eat; not as much variety; very small

1835 Hinman-One of my favorites. Fruit and salad are always fresh. Desserts are freshly baked. Place is really clean and pleasant overall. They have made to order pizzas, which are really good. I've walked all the way from North just to eat here.

Foster Walker West-Lots of people's favorite. Everything's made to order (you stand in line, tell them what you want them to make, and they'll make it for you). Limited in what you can eat: You can only get burgers, sandwiches, quesadillas, burritos, pasta (any kind), and salads. However, all are freshly made right in front of you. Plus you can tell them what you want in you're salad/burger/burrito whatever. Does serve standard desserts and fruit. High quality tasting food.

Foster Walker East-really good hours (open almost all day); decent food (though nothing to eat..just your standard food that's served at Allison, Hinman, Elder, and Sargent). Very low-key overall.

Sargent-Biggest hall on campus. Smells a bit, but you get used to eat. Has the most variety of food (b/c of size). It's really hit or miss. They do a lot of 'special days.' They'll have ethnic/gourmet food nites at time. If you don't like what they've cooked, you can just get a burrito made or whatever. Most of the food isn't very fresh. I eat here the most...I can tolerate it. Sargent breakfasts are awesome, though.

Elder-I really like it. It's a clean hall with a lot of good food. You get made to order sandwiches/wraps and salads. Again, they serve mostly the standard fair served at Allison, Hinman, FW East, and Sargent.

There's just a personal view. In all, you'll get a chance to eat at a variety of halls. I wouldn't worry about that now.

Bobb-

It is what it is. It'll be social most of the time..but you can get to sleep. It's a matter of getting used to it. It's not like crazy alll the time (prolly only Friday and Saturday nites). I think it being a 'party dorm' can lead to a lot of exaggerations.

Elder-
Really social and fun; good community. Has a decent dining hall; small rooms; can get a bit crazy (b/c of a bunch of frosh). I think it's a decent looking dorm. Some people think it's a **** hole.

wait...the common consensus before was that if u list an unpopular dorm in ur top five, u'll get into that dorm
i couldn't think of any other dorm for my fifth choice so i put sargent
willard, elder, allison, bobb and sargent in that order...
is sargent that unpopular...?

how popular is shepard?? what's it like?

My questions are about: Chapin, Shepard, CRC, 1835 Hinman, CCI, and PARC

1) Out of these six dorms, are any of them unpopular enough that if you put them anywhere on your list of 5 they will assign you there no matter what?

2) Other than slivka, from the 6 dorms listed, do any of them have NON-COMMUNAL bathrooms available for freshmen? (for example, a bathroom that you share with just your suite-mates)

3) Can someone give more info about the social life at these dorms?

4) Any other comments on these dorms would be appreciated. (Does 1835 Hinman not provide a good freshmen experience?...Does anyone have info on PARC?)

---Hope someone can answer soon (especially #2 and #3) because I need to fill out the housing app...

1) From talking to current students, the only one I'm not sure of is PARC. I specifically asked someone in CCI, since I listed that 5th, and he said there's pretty much no freshmen there that listed it anything under 3rd. And some other students told me that they put CRC first and didn't even get it. I know Shepard and Chapin are pretty popular, and 1835 has a decent freshman population as well.

2) I think 1835 Hinman, since this is suite-style.

3) Again, from what others have told me: Shepard is enjoyable but mildly quiet, someone told me a lot of loners go there. Everyone says CRC is small but a very close community and you should definitely get along with most if not all of the people there, and you will enjoy yourself. 1835 is cool because you will form good bonds with your suitemates, but you have to go elsewhere to party (not a big deal).

4) I specifically asked about 1835 since I was worried about the same thing, and a freshman there convinced me that he was having a great time. He said there was a great freshman population and everyone got along really well. He listed a bunch of advantages to the suite style setup and said he was applying to live there again next year.

It's hard to say which dorms are "unpopular enough." You didn't pick any of the really UNpopular ones (ie - single-sex), but you didn't pick any of the really popular ones either. CRC and CCI would be the only ones I would think are in the unpopular group, but I don't think you need to worry about getting automatically get put in any of them.

CCI, PARC and 1835 all are suite-style, so you will share a bathroom with only your suitemates.

CCI isnt suite, Slikva is though.

Sorry, I didn't mean CCI. I meant CRC. All these abbreviations...

Small Question: If someone that lived in...say...Bobb wanted to go to one of the Slivka Hall's lectures from a science-tech type speaker, can you?

my five choices (in order) are willard, allison, shephard, slivka, ayers. I really want to get into my top 2 choices. Can someone tell me if there would be a big chance that they would just place me into slivka or ayers in terms of it being "unpopular"? Actually, my main concern is putting down ayers as my 5th choice (as i know that my first 4 choices should be pretty popular choices on campus). Can anyone suggest what to put down as my 5th choice to help ensure my spot in willard or allison??

as a freshmen, I would like to be placed in a semi-social dorm so that it would be easier to make friends the first year. I have heard that slivka (although very nice) is quite anti-social. As far as ayers, can someone tell me how is it in terms of how social it is and approximately, in whats the freshmen proportion there?

since most of my choices are residential colleges, do I have to write an essay for each one or just one essay for all of them?

Thanks a bunch!

oh gosh! deciding is so hard! what is the difference between willard and allison? I am having trouble deciding which one to put down as my first choice. I am an econ major looking to enjoy a good freshmen year experience in a semi-social dorm. I have heard that there are more freshmens in allison than willard and that willard is cleaner than allison? ahhhh help! i don't know what to do!

does anyone know anything about the essay we have to write for residential colleges? i started the housing application but apparently once you submit a page you can't go back, so I don't want to go on to find out if there's an essay until i've finalized my choices.
does the essay have to be sent by june 10 also? and what is the prompt?
