CRC is has a fun and bit more rowdy mix of artsy majors. Great place to be if you are a Comm. kid or in Medill. Especially if you are an RTVF major so you have friends to be in your films. PARC seems to be a bit isolated. I know some really cool kids who live there though. Not a party dorm. Slivka is like a hotel. If you want to live somewhere really nice live there. It also has a cafe in it that is open until 2am during the week. In terms of social life Slivka tends to be one of the quitest dorms on campus and is even in a feud with SigEp the frat that is accross the sidewalk from them. Slivka kids call in parties for being too loud a lot. However, there are some party kids in Slivka too. 1835 Hinman is also a more social dorm in general. If you live in CRC or PARC the suites aren't really that suitey. Most people keep the doors between the suites open so that it is more like one long hall with a couple of lounges in between. There is a lot of bathroom sharing, including the ocassional girl in the guys bathroom. Slivka has true suites. You open one door and then there are three rooms and a large lounge. Slivka also has awesome kitchen facilities if you like to cook or think you'll be selling baked goods as a fund raiser. I'm not sure about 1835's suites since I've never been in the rooms, just the dining hall.

A word of advice to all. Don't apply to live on North Campus if you are not a science/engineer person unless you want to live in Bobb or the freshman quad, it makes it much more difficult to make friends and it's really far away from Evanston and most of your classes on South Campus.

North Dorms according to niceness in facilities
1.Slivka
2. Ayers CCI
3. Sargent... but it's really quiet
4. Small single sex dorms and CCS, they're in old frat houses so the rooms are pretty big
5. Bobb/Muchulloch rooms are small and dark but have lots of really big cabanets and most kids don't care anyway, they're there for the social scene
6. Freshman Quad houses

South Campus
1. Willard. Walk in closets and fairly large rooms
2. Chapin because of size
3. Allison because pretty large and very social. Lots of second years want to move to Allison
4. Not sure... CRC, ISRC, and PARC have the same layout. They all have really small rooms. Shepard- Decent. Smaller rooms. Sucks if you live in "the cave" where 11 girls share one bathroom and are isolated from the rest of the dorm by the entire basement. All the facilities are in the basement. Lots of music majors live there because they have practice rooms. Fairly social dorm however.SMQ/NMQ -small rooms but decent facilities. Really small so many people there say there is a lot of drama.
5. Jones. Lots and lots of dramatic theater kids, really small rooms, almost lost on the corner of campus.
Small houses south... I have no idea.

Don't worry about sharing bathrooms. It's really not that big of a deal.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO LIVE IN CCI, PARC, ISRC, CCS or one of the SMALL SINGLE SEX HOUSES, DO NOT APPLY TO LIVE THERE. YOU WILL BE PLACED THERE AUTOMATICALLY!!!!!

Elder has short shower heads so beware if you are taller than 5'7"

Sargent has gross food. 1835 and Allison are the best. Elder is okay, Al the guy who swipes your card is worth going there just to see him.

The essay for res colleges isn't that big of a deal. Just do it. Res colleges offer a lot of opportunities that you wouldn't get otherwise.

Someone asked earlier- the essays are rather easy. "Why do you think res. colleges are a good fit for you" and "Which ones did you pick, and what will you bring to these dorms?" Each is 200 words or less.

According to someone in Ayers CCI now, as I said earlier, nearly everyone there listed it in their 1-3 slot. He and others at NU didn't seem to think putting it 5th would get me placed there, which is what I did.

wattski, are you sure that puttind down CCI will place me there for sure? According to many earlier posts by other students, it's cool: it has big rooms; it's close to the lake and that sports center; it's close to two dining halls and to Tech. What's so unpopular about it?

i stayed there for preview nu. it's a really nice dorm. friendly kids, big rooms, really clean. some are in frats/party outside of the dorms too. it's definetely underrated, there probably are no problems with it.

i stayed at CCI for Preview NU too. i thought it looked too institutional with all the cinderblock walls and maze-like halls. Definitely didnt feel very homey.. but the rooms are biggish, the bathroom was fine, and people seemed cool and friendly. But if you want to live up there, Slivka is much much much nicer in terms of architecture, convenience, and such... although it is slightly more expensive, i believe.

i really want to live in slivka, but if i can't get in, the only other north campus building i like is cci (i want to be close to tech). but i'm afraid that if i put slivka first and cci second, i'll automatically get cci. do you think it's better to put two popular south campus dorms in #2 and #3 and then cci as #4 so that i have a better chance of getting slivka? or would that just backfire and give me a south campus dorm instead?

"My list was:
Allison
Willard
Shepard
CRC
Chapin

And I got Willard. It's a total gamble."

A current freshman told me that. I don't think there's any use trying to cheat the housing system. It seems very arbitrary. Put them down in the order you want them in, and see what happens.

I emailed the housing ppl about using that strategy of picking very popular dorms as the bottom 4 choices just to get your #1 choice - and they assured me that there really isn't a way to "cheat" the system - and that they have heard of many many ways to try to do so, this being one of them...so I dunno, just...simply...pick your top 5 choices!

It's really not that hard to understand the system.

They pick everyone's name out by lottery. Once your name comes up they go to your #1 choice and if that's full then they go to your #2 and so on. If all of your choices are filled up then they are just going to give you a random dorm that still has space.

Well the res colleges are a little bit different with the essays, but unless you write an essay about not wanting a res college then I'm pretty sure you're going to get in.

1) Willard and Shepard are both non thematic res colleges. SO what are the differences between the two and what makes Willard so much more popular.

2) Can someone comment on the social life, bathrooms, facilities, and "overallness" of Shepard, CRC, and Chapin??
