Housing Reassignment

I recently recieved my dorm assignment, but I didn’t get my first preference. I immediately sent in a request to be put on a wait list for a reassignment. How long does is take to know if I will be reassigned or just stay with what I got?

I would’ve just stayed with whatever you had. I’m in the same situation and being on a housing wait list at the end of July sucks. I don’t know how your school does it but my school automatically gives up the room to someone a wait list as soon as someone requests a different room.

I would recommend sticking with the room you have and hopefully requesting a new one didn’t completely bump you out of your room onto a wait list.

Second preference housing is better than no housing. Unless there’s a safety concern or you have conflict with your roommate I would recommend staying in the room you have. You might even enjoy it, my older sister had the UGLIEST old dorm in history. Probably one of the oldest buildings at her school but it had a awesome community and everyone equally hated it and had something to bond over.

I don’t mean to scare you. It just depends on your school and how many dorms they have. My school is a small liberal arts that had more incoming freshman enroll than what they have a housing capacity of.

From someone who’s on a wait list at this time to get a room in general, I would be happy if someone decided to drop a perfectly good room so I wouldn’t recommend throwing it away at this time.

However, this probably would be more risky and I absolutely wouldn’t put my life on it but normally students receive tuition reports and sadly a lot of kids drop the school for financial reasons and so you’re not totally doomed. It just depends on how big your school and how many students.

Good luck!

You could find out in a few days or maybe even after move in. It is a numbers game. If someone in the dorm you prefer asks to move out then there will be a spot for you there. If no one wants out, then there won’t be. Most people who want out of a “better” dorm do so for financial reasons, decide to live with a friend in another dorm, decide to live off campus or decide not to attend at the last minute. There isn’t anyway to predict when that will all shake out but the due date of the first tuition payment and the due date of the first housing payment will be key deadlines.

In the meantime, plan to end up with your current dorm and plan to make the best of it. Good luck!

^Don’t decide to not attend at the last minute!

Try to get your room back before its too late.

I only say this because that would be a sick situation to just decide to not go all together.

Bigger schools tend to have more traffic when it comes to dorms because they have more dorms to provide and more students who have all types of unique situations.

At this point. I would call and ask a general question. Ask something like “what is the demand of dorms right now?” They’ll tell you and then you’ll be able to decide what to do from there.

I don’t think the OP has decided to withdraw from the university. They are just waiting for a better room to free up. And until it does, they still have a room to go to.
