Well maybe for an NMF, the compromise can be this…contact both departments, explain that you’re wanting info about each major.

At this point (Nov/Dec), I don’t think it’s that critical to change one’s major. I think that if the OP lets Alabama knows his choice of major by later in the winter, he can still get all the info he needs.

Of course, it would help if the OP could visit UA and make appts with both departments, in addition to the typical campus tour which wouldn’t be the venue for his specific pre-med vs B-school questions.

ok 3 questions that will make or break my mood for the next week.

(1) Is the pell grant giving every semester (like 2100 per semester if that is what it says you have)

(2) Is the eng/CS scholarship 2500 a semester?

(3) Recently I asked a person how often you pay for the housing, they responded that you pay by year. So If you have a cost of 3,500 for dorms you’d pay 3500 for 2 semesters together. Is that correct (hoping) or is it acutally 3500 a semester?

Wait… so I have to pay my deposit by March 1 or the non-honors kids can pick honors housing over me? Or that I have to live in non-honors? Or something else? I’m confused.

Financial aid is dispersed each semester but the financial aid letter you’ll be getting in the spring will detail you aid for the entire academic year. If you’re eligible for $2100 per semester, you will get $2100 applied to your account each semester. The engineering scholarship is $2,500 per year, I don’t know if half is applied to your account each semester or all the first semester.

No, you pay each semester when you confirm your schedule. It’d be a nightmare for many people to have to pay for the whole year in advance. Assuming a $2100 per semester Pell Grant, the $2,500 annual engineering scholarship, $350 per semester in course fees, the 160 meal plan, $300 in dining dollars, and housing in a traditional dorm at 2009-2010 rates, you’d be at $747 a semester plus books, travel, and other expenses. Using current financial aid statistics, the estimated cost for everything is $2,787 a semester.

jrt336, you have until May 1 to make a decision and pay your deposit. March 1 is a priority date and beyond that, the earlier you pay your deposit, the better selection of rooms you will have to choose from.

At Alabama, you sign up for the year, but you’re charged by the semester. For regular double rooms, it’s about $4400 per year, but you’re billed $2200 each semester. Same for meal plans.

The only thing that I can think of that you pay for the entire year, is you car permit/decal for student parking.

*I am not sure what your supposed to do, I’m just gonna go ahead and pay mine in December with some money i’ve been saving. *

Worried…are you required to make deposits? Did you apply by waiver? If so, do waiver students have to make school deposits and/or housing deposits?

jrt…do you care which honors residence hall you’re in? Like I said, none are old; they all have the private room super suites?

Would you have an opportunity to visit the school in the next few months?

I did not apply by waiver and don’t even know what that is. If it requires a low income though I’m prolly eligible. Got the waiver for the ACT because of that. So yes as of right now i’m required to pay a deposit

Students who have waivers for the ACT or SAT are also allowed to apply to the school with a waiver (to save on the app fee). Another student here on CC applied with a waiver, so when he was accepted he found a notation on his MyBama that suggested that his deposit is also covered by the waiver.

I’ve been encouraging Capstone Scholars Day to jrt336 and others. The website is now up at [Capstone Scholars Day - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://csd.ua.edu/csd.html) . It’s a great time to visit UA.

That’s interesting that deposits are covered if one has a fee waver. If it’s not, it will be $450 less you have to pay come your first college bill. Worriedstudent10, I highly encourage calling UA about this.

SEA_tide…am I reading this right (my mind is foggy lol). Shouldn’t it be …If it is, it will be $450 less you have to pay…

Anyway, SEA_tide makes a great suggestion to call the school to find out if fee waivers cover deposits even if you didn’t use one for your app. (I’d also find out if I could send one in now and have them credit your account for your app fee.)

Everyone pays deposits (except possibly waiver students), but the deposits are credited back in the late summer. The only deposit (I think) that isn’t credited back is $25 for some kind of odd housing thing.

But, a student can defer deposits, if he still isn’t sure where he wants to go. Of course, the longer you defer, the more you risk not getting into whatever housing you want - if you have a preference for a particular res hall or floor.

Deposits are really the only way Alabama (or any college) can really get a feel for who is really coming to the school. Schools need that info to accurately plan how many freshmen classes they’ll need.

Yes, that is a typo on my part. $425 of the $450 deposit which is mandatory for all students to pay, except possibly waiver students, will be credited to the student’s account. If for some reason this results in an overpayment, UA will send a check for the overpaid amount (it’s on one of the scholarship FAQ’s for the presidential scholarship, but applies to all students ). The $25 that is not credited is a housing application fee. If I’m not mistaken, come spring or so, the student is sent a letter with instructions on how to decline or accept the scholarship offer online. Nothing to worry about right now, but don’t be surprised if you get a letter explaining this in a few months.

Thanks for clarifying the $25. I knew that it wasn’t reimbursed, but I couldn’t remember what the charge was for - an application fee for housing.

And, yes, scholarship recipients will be asked to accept or decline their offers sometime in the spring. There may be a way to ask for an extention for decision for scholarships.
