If you have any questions about housing at UCI, post them here!

do most people live on campus or out?

Most people do not live "on campus". However, many students live in off campus apartments that are across the street from the school, so it's not like they live at home with their parents 30 miles away or anything. Many more live in Newport, about 5-10 minutes away.

But if you are asking about how many people live in campus-owned housing, I would say that maybe 25% do.

You guys gotta check out www.vistadelcampo.com

Looks nice. How was your experience there? Cost?

I currently live on campus in the dorms, Mesa Court to be exact. I could answer any questions that you have.

Vista del Campo just opened this year, so it's brand new. They are also currently building more units. It's a unique community because it's built on campus land, but it's owned and run by a private, outside company. Everyone I know who lives there LOVES it. The cost depends on what size apartment you have. A one bedroom is the most expensive, and the four bedroom is the cheapest. I'm sure the rates are on the site somewhere.

wow. everybody my woman knows and everbody i know hates VDC. mainly b/c its a ripoff, but also b/c its more like nazi-germany in the 30's: lots of restrictions.

Oh whoops, I missed that link. Looks really nice, but it seems a bit pricey. How does the cost compare to other housing units around campus?

I think that the main thing the people hate about VDC is the parking situation. There just aren't enough parking spaces to accommodate everyone. But that's really nothing new. But the numbers I've heard support my observation about people loving it - nearly everyone who lives there (and isn't graduating) is living there again next year, and their wait list had over 3,000 people on it.

It is a bit pricey, though. It's more expensive than living on campus, but cheaper than living in an Irvine Apartment Communities (IAC) complex across the street. If you want to live across the street, you might be paying almost $2000 a month for a two bedroom place, so that means that you'll be sharing a room for $500 plus paying utilities. When you take into account that you get your own room in VDC and don't pay utilities, it's a hell of a deal.

All the people I know like VDC a lot. In order to get into VDC you have to turn in your papers really early. On the night before housing apps were due there was already a line outside the door at midnight.

Where do most incoming freshmen tend to live?

There are two freshman residence hall complexes - Mesa Court and Middle Earth. I would guess that they both house a roughly equal number of UCI freshmen.

I went to the Honors Experience today and went on the tour for both Mesa Court and Middle Earth. I found Mesa Court to be more spacious, while Middle Earth seemed more fun to be in. Can you give us a personal rundown of each one and the others?

Traditionally and stereotypically, Mesa's dorms are nicer and the people are more social and not as nerdy. Of course these are all stereotypes. I live in Mesa Court (you might have even looked at my room today cause it was on display for honors experience day) and I think it is better but maybe I'm biased. Mesa Court has one dining hall, Mesa Commons, that is pretty big and is pretty decent foodwise. Middle Earth has a large one, Pippen, and a smaller one, Brandywine. Pippen is ok but it's kinda like eating in a poorly lit warehouse. Brandywine on the other hand probably has the best eats out of all the dining halls. Note that they all aren't THAT different, it's just that some places do things a little different or offer something slightly different.

Either way, I think Mesa and Middle are both decent enough but I'd take Mesa. How'd you like Loma teal?

Are freshmen allowed to live off campus?

You can but I wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah, I'd definitely live on campus freshman year. I had some fun times in Mesa Court during my first year. You build your social network from three major places - classes, housing, and clubs/organizations. If you live off campus you lose tons of possibilities for great friends and random hook-ups ;)

Is there an advantage for CHP students to live on campus?

question.. im going to irvine next year with two of my best friends. Do you get to pick who you want to live with in the dorms? is it possible for me to room with them?
