Housing

Rubin's ok. It's traditional style, though. There's a dining hall and laundry room in the basement. The printer there sux tho, because it's always out of ink or it just won't print for some insane reason. Also, there isn't a campus cash machine and the closest place that has one is Weinstein (or you could trek over 2 Bobst). The poeple in Rubin this year are rlly friendly (of course idk wat the class o' 2013 might bring so...). I like Rubin 'cuz it's close to everything.

AC isn't a real issue since 1) it's only hot in NY for about a month and then it gets cold and 2) you'll probably spend most of your time outside of your dorm w/ classes and goin out.

Here is a link to a website that has a lot of information about housing options and actual dorm pictures from current NYU students that all incoming freshmen may find helpful. Congrats on your ED acceptances!

WSN HOUSING GUIDE - SPRING 2008

They only kept part of the church in front to appease the residents of the neighborhood, because they were angry that NYU was tearing down something historic

Thnks for the info. :-) As it turns out, I have choose between Rubin and Brittany, due to cost. I'm leaning towards Rubin though, because it has everything, even though it might not be the best quality compared to others around campus. I'm assuming from your post you know Rubin well enough... is it spacious enough? thnks :-)

i think i might just go with hayden. i do hear that they have minor problems with mice and roaches but its usually 1 or 2 per floor and that its not much of a problem on the higher floors. the biggest party dorm for freshman ive heard. id like to find a bunch of people who can go clubbing with me on the weekends which apparently starts on thursday night.

I changed my mind. I wanna be in Hayden next year too. After talking to a few NYU students, it seems like Hayden is by far the most social and the fact that it is closer makes it alot easier to get to class.

Oh, and kinjisasahara... Since you are going to be a clubber and a NYU frosh next year, you would probs like this book. Amazon.com: The Answer Is Always Yes: Monica Ferrell: Books

Don't go with 3rd North. I hear it's full of all kinds of bugs and mice..

I would go with Hayden or Goddard.

Double post. sorry, haha

What about the new dorm on 12th street? Any info about that one and will it be ready by fall?

I haven't heard any news about it, but since it's new I would assume it's pretty nice.

I was told that the 12th street dorm looks like jail cells, but it is new, so that might make up for it.

Does anyone know when we are actually getting our housing app??

Around March/April I'm guessing. Along with all the other stuff like email accounts

12th street should be really nice inside...hopefully. Outside it's a different story lol.

I don't know if i want to task the risk with 12th street and hope it's nice inside or just go to 3rd North and be safe with the apartment style dorm.

ill look into that bryanm. but ive been seriously considering not going to hayden. ill still have it on my list but im going to college to study not party. although i would like a nice balance of both. maybe a dorm where drug use isnt heavy and clubbing isnt the only thing on kids minds.

Yeah... We'll I am not a party animal by any stretch of the imagination, but I mine as well be in a social dorm.

I'm a junior, but I stayed in Goddard over last summer because I was lazy. I wanted to be on campus and you're RIGHT THERE. You're in the middle of everything. You have to get into the program to get into Goddard, however. The rooms are nice but the bathrooms are downright hospital-like. I never saw a mouse there, but our air conditioned made the room all damp. We were in a room facing Bobst Library.

Hayden's dining hall is the best. Third North has a really nice computer lab and it's not that far from campus. I haven't been in the other dorms.

re: the social/anti-social thing

NYU does a ton of stuff to help freshman connect. No matter what dorm you're in, you're all part of IRHC, the inter-residential housing council. We run tons of events during Welcome Week (I was a WWLeader during 2008) to help people get to know each other. Don't pick just by which -seems- more/less social. You'll meet people no matter what. Everyone I've met here at NYU has had different experiences with their freshman year roommate. Some did not click with theirs at all, others have lived with their roommate for three years running. It all depends.

Rubin is a great, great, great dorm. Absolutely ideal for a freshman.

12th street is looking okay, I assume the building is almost done, I pass it at least once a week... its very close to Alumni and 3rd North.
3rd North sucks, and sucks hardcore.
Hayden is awesome as well.
Brittany is okay, no dining hall though.
UHall has cool rooms and an awesome common room, almost half as good as Gramercy's sub-cellar (an upper class dorm). Big TV's, etc, next to Dunkin Donuts and lots of dining...

U-Hall (University Hall) will not be a freshman dorm next year. It's going to be an upperclassman dorm.

Halls available for lottery participants (upperclassman):
13th Street 26th Street Alumni Hall
Carlyle Court* Coral Towers* Gramercy Green*
Greenwich Hotel* Lafayette Street* Palladium Hall*
Second Street* University Court University Hall

I second Rubin. I lived there for 3 years (when it was open to all - not just freshmen) and daughter lives there now. Just buy extra fans and the A/C issue is not a big deal.

second the a/c not being a huge deal. it's only REALLY hot in new york for the end of august and september. and for a majority of that time, you won't be in your dormitory that much, anyway.

and yes, university hall is now an upperclassmen dorm because of 12th street opening.
