housing??

Hmm I was considering a double or triple just to help with the socializing aspect of dorm rooms but then you all make it seem that you can still be as social with a single room. and i sent my housing application in on the 13th, so that should help me get that option i hope lol

The dorms for Muir are separated into two buildings - Tioga and Tenaya. Tioga has 10 floors while Tenaya has a few less (maybe 8?). Half of Tioga above the 5th floor faces the ocean depending on which side of the building you live in, as well as half of Tenaya (although the building is shorter so they have less).

Tioga does NOT have wireless internet, and has very slow internet at that, while Tenaya has wireless and significantly faster internet.

The Muir dining hall (Sierra Summit) was closed this year so all students had to walk to different dining halls, with most going to OVT in Marshall. Sierra Summit is supposed to be open next year so that shouldn’t matter for you guys. If you cross the street from the dorms, there is a path down to Blacks Beach.

Regarding the social aspect, it really depends. Each floor has 4 suites, which each have about 6 rooms ranging from triples to singles with around 11 people in each suite. There is a bathroom in each suite. They are separated by gender and locked off from the hallway by a locked suite door (it can be unlocked but RSOs come by and lock it at around 2am usually). Across the hallway will be another suite (hopefully of the opposite gender). These 2 suites share a side lounge where there is a sink, microwave, couch, chairs, table, and a balcony.

The dorms don’t really encourage social interaction because they are separated by gender and locked off like this, but hopefully you live on a floor with a lot of people who hang out in the side lounge. It’s really weird to just wander into another suite, through a locked door, just to look for people to talk to so nobody really does this except with their own 2 suites.

In general, there are a lot of second years on the 10th floor because the ones who did not get a good registration time that don’t get apartments pick those floors, so you might get lucky and know some awesome people who know what is going on.

Triples/Doubles do help with the social aspect IF you like your roommates! You will get to know most of your suite as long as you don’t hide in your room anyway so it shouldn’t make too much of a difference besides the money/space tradeoff.

^^ haha, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Does anyone know anything about Eleanor Roosevelt college?

to add on to what UCSD2013 said, I think the social aspect at Muir really is better compared to that of most colleges. Since all the suite entrances are facing indoors, it is super easy to meet people in your house (your floor + the floor that is connected to yours by the spiral staircase). The house advisors plan out numerous activities that you + your house can participate in.

@raffles88 - do you have any specific questions about ERC? The dorms are the newest on campus so they’re very nice to look at. The walls are literally paper thin, to the point where you hear cell phones vibrating in the room above you. The dining hall is one of the best on campus, though it gets really old throughout the year. They have sushi and fine dining to mix it up. Really nice huge laundry room in ERC. Big parking structure close by. There is a good amount of double rooms, but some people have to live in Revelle due to lack of space. Overall ERC is a great place to live.

Thanks ucsandiego915!

I recently got the Warren freshman admit newsletter and it said there that requests for single-rooms are determined by lottery and first-year students can expect to live in triples! Oh no, not good. Submitting my housing app on March 17th was useless then…? Because I really want a single! :(

^Well that’s unfortunate. I guess they changed it.

what does the housing application ask?

^It literally asks you, do you want to apply for housing? and you either check a box or type in your name. It doesn’t ask you any questions. All your preferences and all of that come later.

thank you,
I thought I had done something wrong when all I had to select was submit and I went to the confirmation page.
