How bad do C's look on a Transcript?

I forgot to drop a class before the deadline for a “W”, and I am struggling really badly in my Economics class right now. After the last test that I got a D on, I went to my professor’s office hours and we calculated my grade: I will have to get a 188.6% on the final exam and 100%'s on all of my tests to even get a B.

For transfer, I am applying to UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Santa Riverside, and UC Davis (along with CSULB and SDSU) in either Biology, Mathematics, or Business Economics, and I currently have a 3.25 GPA.

How much will the UC’s look down upon me with a C grade in Macroeonomics, and even a C in Calculus 1?

  • UC Riverside. I am not applying to UCSB.

3.25… and u are going to get a C? dont even bother w/ UCLA

I have a few Cs, a D, and a UW and got into all of the schools you listed except for UCI and UCLA. The bad grades are from the late 1990s and I have a 4.0 since I got back into school in 2014. I also applied to a couple of safety schools (CSUMB and CSUEB) to hedge my bets though.

I got a C and 4 W’s and got into UCSD and UCD, I think it’s fine.

If you are struggling to get a C in introductory economics and basic calculus, why do you want to major in those subjects? It will only get harder from here.

Perhaps you should switch to something that you have more of a knack for? Like maybe biology (since you mentioned it)? The competition for economics at most UC’s seem to be pretty fierce.

A few 4.0’s have been turned down for business economics at UCLA this year alone.

@falltransfer1 : I’m not trying to play the victim role, but My Economics Professor is Insanely Hard (although he is a good professor), compared to the other Economics Professors at my CC, and at least 10 people dropped out after the first test back in February.

I got 3 Cs on my record, Chem 200, span 202 and span 225. I got accepted to UCLA as a spanish major and UCSB and UCSD as a linguistics major, im not sure how much of a negitive it is. But its possible to get in with Cs. I think my GPA is like 3.55 or something like that tho, so im not sure how much that comes into account.

I get that some teachers are better than others and that their expectations of their students ranges from zero to borderline graduate work, but saying ‘the professor is hard’ is a cop out. You have a ton of resources at your disposal to learn a subject like basic micro or macro economics.

I hate to be a downer but, a 3.25 probably won’t get you into a biz major at any of the UCs you list. Take a look at the UCR tag threshold - 3.5+ for Business.

Unless you are ‘local’, SDSU and CSULB are probably also out of reach.

SFSU, SJSU and Sonoma are good option, you are probably on the bubble for Chico and Fullerton,

Broaden your sights a bit.

Good luck

@NCalRent I actually do NOT want to major in Business/Business Economics if I plan on transferring to a CSU/UC Campus. I am considering between Biology, Mathematics, Economics (Social Science), and Mechanical Engineering, but I am not sure really. I didn’t really come into CC with a plan and just chose random classes (This is my first year), with a hard time figuring out WHY i am actually attending CC.
I did get all A’s and B’s last semester, it’s just Econ that is giving me trouble.

I’d say it depends on your personal statements and extra curriculars. I have 2 Ws and 1 C (in behavioral stats). I had a 3.51 when I applied to UCSD, UCI, UCLA and Berkeley. However, I hold a lot of leadership positions on campus and more than half of the classes I’ve taken were for honors credit. I got into to every school so far, just waiting on Berkeley. I also have a 3.83 in my major prep courses… Not sure if that’s a big determining factor.

Sorry OP - i clearly didn’t read your full post. For Bio, you have a shot at TAGing Davis and UCR. I’d still suggest broadening your sights a bit.

Good luck

@NCalRent : I’m also considering CSU San Marcos as a backup school

I hope your first choice works out but, good Plan!

@bowling555 I got rejected from UCLA with a 3.89. Don’t hope too much and be disappointed like me. You should apply to UCSD.

I had two C’s when applying to the UC’s and ended up at UCLA. I talked to an admissions rep during Bruin Day (back in 2014) and asked them how I got admitted because my GPA was so low when I applied. She looked at my record and notes that were on her iPad (all the admission reps have these cool little iPads where they have access to your UC application with INCREDIBLY details notes/comments/concerns posted by other admission reps) and she sai to me, “Well, you’re a good student, you get mostly A’s and B’s, and you have two C’s which is fine”. So, having C’s is not the end-all-be-all for a school like UCLA.

Also, my friend was recently admitted with a similar record as mine, and received a C in his major prep course for spring semester. His admission decision still held (found out on Friday), so he is going into UCLA With 3 C’s!

Do C’s matter? YES. Are they the end-all-be-all? Absolutely not.

Can you type up your whole application because as a student wanting to go o UCLA myself I think it’s surprising that you got admitted with Cs and were you a college transfer?

That’s a rather large request to ask of him. It’s not terribly surprising. UCLA utilizes a holistic approach to admissions; grades are important, but not everything. UCLA will look at the application as a whole when evaluating an applicant, not just the transcripts. Last year somebody here got admitted with a 3.14 GPA.

Try your best to not get C’s, but if you get one or two you aren’t necessarily screwed.

@itakenotes : I took my Calculus 1 Final today, and I am pretty sure I got a C. Because my professor drops an exam and homework (the lowest score received), the standards for getting a A and B are much higher. And besides, there were AT LEAST 5 out of the 15 questions on the final that stumped me.
