How "bad" is a 700 in SAT History

I just revealed to my mother that I got a 700 on my MAY SAT Subject test... She is now starting to freak out. She asked me why the score was so low, and told my brother (in eighth grade) that she is going to prepare them for these tests starting this week and during the summer. She assumed that I was going to get a high score because I'm in AP US History, but I know someone in my class that got a 630. She wants me to go to ivy league, but all of my SAT scores (subject and reasoning) have been over 700 (730 Bio 730 Math IIC)... Should she be worrying too much or is it justified?

Relax. Those SAT II scores won't keep you out of the ivies.

I'm relaxed. The only person who isn't is my idiotic asian mother

My guidance counselor says that SAT II scores are the type of thing that help you if they're high and don't really affect you if they're low.

Plus, a 700 isn't low -- don't worry about it. If it really bothers you and you plan on majoring in history or something related, retake it. If, however, you're going into science (for example), I don't think you really need to do anything about it.

Don't worry. That score is fine. Mine D got into Harvard with a similar SATII score in history as a humanities major.

Your mom is just crazy.
Yes, there will be many people applying to ivies with higher scores. But, you would be much better served by having an outstanding EC or even by having great SAT Is, than you would be by that 700 being an 800.

it wont hurt your chances, but it's not a particularly strong score either....so it wont be a huge factor.

I know how you feel....i got 770/760/800 on my SATII's and my dad's first reaction was "that's it?"

Wow, preparing your 8th grade brother for SATs? That's ridiculous...And a 700 is not a bad score at all...

And shouldn't where YOU go to school be YOUR choice? Do you want to go to an ivy?

hahai got into cornell with a 600 on history and a 620 on math II

Amazingly, this kind of thing is so common that Princeton Review has started some classes to help out mothers such as yours with their problem. See the url below and sign her up for it -- or start spiking her coffee with Oxycontin, the best chill pill:

tell her to get a life. A 700 out of 800 is a great score. I mean yes the curve is high, but it is still a great score.

pair of 670's and 720's sprung me and then some, get a new mother

This is coming from another parent:

First of all, your score is good.

I have no idea if you will get accepted to an Ivy school or not, but in the long run it doesn't matter, not one little tiny bit.

I'm sorry that your mom hasn't learned that there are more important things in life. Is it a good goal? Sure, maybe, but your life is not ruined if it doesn't happen (unless you ruin it yourself, but that won't have anything to do with whether or not you were accepted into the school of your (or their) dreams - that will have to do with you - how you decide to respond to the let down. Will you choose defeat, or will you choose to move forward with a new plan and succeed in spite of it?)

700 is a good score, be proud, buy some ear plugs and carry on.

my mom tried to justify by saying that 700/800 is a "B-"... What an idiot

Don't hate your mom. She only wants what she thinks is best, and you can't blame a mother for wanting the best possible for her kids. Maybe if you go reverse, it'd make her more sympathetic. I'M usually the one to freak out over scores and stuff, but she's the one that tells me that it alone won't keep me from my goals.

Noting that this is from a rarified testing population, what's the percentile?

I'm assuming you're a junior. As long as your SAT I score is good and you have the other qualifications for an Ivy, you will be fine. A 700 isn't too "bad", SAT II scores don't count that much. If you are still worried about it, study a lot over the summer and retake it in September.

My D -- who is now at Barnard -- got a 520. :)

(There's an explanation -- for scheduling reasons, she ended up taking the exam BEFORE she took the course -- AFTER she took the course she got a 4 on the AP exam, but by then she was already admitted to college. )

But the point is that the world didn't come crashing down over that terrible score.

A 700 is fine.

almostdone11, that's wonderful. I want to go to Cornell, but I got a 700 on Bio M and felt like that was going to killll my application. Apparently, it's not THAT bad. But... which school in Cornell did you apply for? CAS, CALS, ILR, etc.?

I think I got a 750, 720, 690 on SATII Math, English, Chemistry. Never effected my admissions (managed to get into Princeton at least, so that's something). No, SAT II isn't such a big of a deal that a 700 will doom you, as far as I can tell they are a better indication of whether you're lazy or not. If your scores match you grades you put in the appropriate effort, combine this with a rigorous schedule and you got a hard working good applicant. When you get 2400 SAT and three 800 SAT II, but have a GPA of 2, that's when you get into trouble with admissions.
