Question about my SAT II Score

Hey, guys! So excited to be making my first post in CC!

To get to the point, I've taken 4 SAT II's (Math IIC, Literature, Chemistry, and US History) and got 800, 790, 790, 780 respectively. This year (my senior year), my mother, who seems to know everything about college admissions, told me to take SAT II Spanish b/c the Ivy League Schools that I'm applying to want to see foreign language on my resume.

So I took the test...and got a 670. Today, my mother freaked and yelled that I should just give up on Yale (EA), Harvard, Columbia, etc, b/c that score will screw me over. Now, she wants me to retake the test and I don't really want to...

Is she telling the truth? She's been right about so many college stuff b4 that now, I'm kinda apprehensive.

Sorry the post was kinda long, and all answers are appreciated!

your mom made a stupid mistake. you had 4 extremely high SAT IIs in 4 different subjects. there was absolutely no reason for you to take the language one, especially if you weren't confident.

that said, your chances aren't changed. Harvard looks at your top 3, Yale/Columbia 2 each. Your mother is overreacting. you do not need to retake--that just shows that you're way too neurotic about test scores and have nothing better to do with your Saturday mornings. tell her to chill out and be happy with the FOUR SCORES ABOVE 750 THAT YOU GOT.

stay on these forums and you'll soon know more about college than her. blood boiling...

I don't think you should worry about it. You have 4 SAT II scores already, and I'm pretty sure they only require 3. Why do u think you won't have a chance anymore at these schools? If these schools just looked at one SAT II score, then barely any bright people would be there. They look at stuff besides your SAT scores as well. For example, your SAT score could help you. So can your extracurricular activities. So don't worry about it. Also, if your guidance counselor has had experience with students applying to top schools, then seek her out for advice.

Forgive your mom. None of the ivies expect to see a language SAT II; ivies require any two, except Harvard and Princeton require three; there are very few colleges that expect to see a language SAT II and none of those requires them for admission -- those, such as Vanderbilt, want it for placement after admission. The ivies do expect to see language, but only on your transcript as courses you took in high school. That extra Spanish score will not have an impact. Whatever you do, cease taking SAT IIs. If you are rejected by the ivies (and most who apply are) it won't be because of SAT II scores.

haha i think your mom just wanted you to take a subject test under each of the categories possible (math, english, science, history, languages). but yea the spanish subject test wont hurt you. although schools may wonder why you chose to take a fifth one when you already had four amazing scores...

hold up...a 670 in spanish?, the spanish test is catored to native speakers! it falls in two categories as far as the scoring goes, native speakers almost always score 800, leaving non-native speakers with an average well below 600. For a non-native speaker, a 670 in spanish is exceptional, colleges kno this. I am surprised no one has mentioned that to you yet. That is a great score. How are is your SAT I and APs? If they are decent you will be fine.

At the Harvard Info session we attended in September, the Admissions Officer indicated that the "forgeign language requirement" could be fulfilled by receiving a score of 5 on an AP test or a score of 600+ on an SAT II. Your score of 670 is terrific. Congrats!

You know, sometimes I dislike my parents for staying out of the admissions process entirely. If I asked them which schools I was applying to, they'd have no idea. I gave them my essay to read two weeks ago - haven't heard anything, not even a yay or nay.

Other times...I really appreciate it.

On a side note, no, you will be fine. Every school looks at your 2 or 3 (If you're applying to Harvard or Princeton) highest scores anyway.

Your scores are amazing!!! Write down your 5 SAT II scores in your application. A little "flaw" will actually makes you look more "human" and thus more appealing. Don't waste time on the SATs. Focus on your essays and enjoy your time. Good luck!
