Is the heat in Houston a major problem for people used to a much cooler climate (I'm from just north of Chicago)? I really love Rice, but I'm a bit concerned about being in such a different climate.

The heat will be a problem for you initially. Think Chicago on a humid and warm 95-degree day. But our body always adapts to changes so you will get used to it pretty quickly.

I'm from Alaska where summer highs are in the low 60's. The heat has really not been that big of a deal. I think people always assume that the heat will pose a bigger problem than it really does. After just a few weeks here I have been completely adapted. I now find it chilly when it gets into the 70's (a temperature that I wouldn't dream of in AK). Also you spend most of your time indoors and the air conditioning is intense. I would be more worried about adapting to the cold than the hot. In fact you usually have to bring a sweater when you go anywhere just in case the AC is too cold.

I agree with both of the posts above. I've lived in both Houston and Alaska, and the heat is a lot easier to withstand than most people believe.

Also, don't forget that the heat in Houston really only lasts from the beginning of school to mid-October. Then the rest of the year ranges from really pleasant to somewhat cool. And what weather would you rather be experiencing in February -- highs in the 60's or the Chicago winter?

it depends on the person......i had a friend from MD who couldn't adjust here. She was miserable and transferred out her soph yr....even though she seemed to love the school itself.

Yeah, it's really hot here right now. However, it'll be really nice in the winter. It's not that big a deal.

One thing you should know is that everything here is super air conditioned, including the residential colleges. I often take a sweater to class even though it's 95 outside.

thanks everybody, I'm feeling a lot better about houston now

Come to Rice! We need more Chicagoans here! I'm from Chicago and I just got here to Rice and I have to say the heat is not bad at all it's actually pretty nice. The only problem is that everything is OVER AIRCONDITIONED in Houston. Like my dorm room is f-ing freezing a lot. I actually prefer the outdoors. Ironically, my roommate from Texas and I keep having thermostat battles. I want it warmer in the room and he wants it colder!

dont worry about the weather, you will get used to it. it isnt so bad in the loop either, not as many mosquitoes.

The weather has been amazing recently. Soft breezes in the 60's. Maybe 80's in the afternoon. But the evening, night, and mornings have been excellent. Probably just a cool front, but nevertheless the weather isn't always terrible.

I'm going to agree. The weather has been astonishingly good for the past few days.

It's 92 right now, however : )

Yay for trees! They provide me with shade and joy.

Despite the ridiculous heat, we do have A/C in every building. The A/C works really well...almost a bit too well. I love giving my friends at Duke, UVA, and northeastern schools a hard time because they don't have A/C.

The weather has been so gorgeous lately! Well sat night we had a thunderstorm, but for the most part, the days have been perfect. It is days like these that make me happy I am in Houston.

My philosophy class met outside today. It was a perfect day to do so.

I agree. Philosophy was excellent, even though the teacher thought it was four degrees too hot.
