my parents are gonna kill me tonight. i found out i got waitlisted at davis and ucsd.
2130 sat score
780 math 2
760 chem
like 4.0 something uc gpa
3.79 uw gpa (i know not good)
but ill be graduating high school with 69 college quarter credits.
my ec’s are alright. i helped create a documentary, i was a tutor, 300 hours community service, a tutor, and i was a treasurer at a cinema making club at my schoo. this is dissapointed, and my parents are gonna be more dissapointed in me…
im not surprised about sd, but i thought davis was a safety.
At the risk of sounding cruel, I have to wonder whether you were as casual when submitting your application as you are in your post here in terms of grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, capitalization, etc. I always suspect that someone who can’t be bothered to craft a post with even the barest minimum of care might not produce the highest quality essays. Writing is a practice, and the best writers have to exercise their skills in order for them to become easy and natural. Your stats certainly are well above the norm for Davis, outside of some Engineering/STEM departments, and above average for UCSD. My son got into both, from out-of-state, with lower stats. I hope things work out for you; good luck!
@woogzmama i typed my post in 30 seconds as I was panicking about my decision. Of course, I would check my application essay before submitting it… i was typing fast here and i didnt care to check for grammar mistakes because i was solely looking for fast responses.
i applied for electrical engineering for both so maybe thats why i got waitlisted… but still… electrical engineering isnt impacted as much as other engineering majors like computer science, mech engineering, bio med, and the likes.
My son applied last year, and he applied for regular Arts & Sciences. I understand that you were typing on a phone, but - old fogey that I am - I worry that many in your generation have developed careless writing habits. Old folks like me always took more care in writing, because our casual communications were typically oral, while writing was reserved for more formal efforts.
@woogzmama i think that’s because our perception of internet has changed since then. back when you were a child (sorry, i’m not trying to put you down on your age… but you said it yourself that youre old), the internet has probably been a lot more formal as with emailing and all its limited ways of communication. now with social media and forums like this, the internet is a lot more casual so i assume that people simply don’t care to put in effort when writing on forums because it’s seen as a casual/informal environment to us.
@woogzmama well our world is changing. i hate the fact that all college decisions come out via online portals rather than snail mail and that people use DSLR’s instead of SLR’s, but thats just where things are headed. We all die soon enough anyway so we won’t have to deal with change forever.
@ItsHydro sorry. its not low, but i thought it was low for ucsd. personally, i consider it to be a great gpa, but it doesnt seem to match up with ucsd engineering majors gpas.
I am really surprised that you got waitlisted in both schools. By conventional logic, this shouldn’t have happened. Sorry to hear that. Hope you get into a better school. Did you apply to UCLA/UCB/UCI? Good Luck
@ItsHydro trust me, i showed passion. my parents payed about 500 dollars to get my essay corrected… and at the ends, it seemed like i didnt even write it. i can pm you the essay if you want.
I got accepted to UC Davis and waitlisted by UC San Diego.
4.2 UC GPA capped.
29 ACT / 1850 SAT.
No SAT II.
Electrical Engineering.
I had a decent amount of extracurriculars but nothing amazing. However, I thought my essays were great! I didn’t have anyone correct it but I did have someone read it and give me feedback.
Reading your post truly made me sad and I am disappointed that people would comment about grammatical errors in your post rather than empathizing with your concern about how your parents may react. This is a tough process and none of us really know the answers for why one student is selected over another. Just know that you will be okay and that (as trite as it may sound)…everything works out for a reason! Best of luck to you!
Yeah, that is a bit odd. I would’ve suspected that your stats alone would’ve gotten you in to either SD or Davis. This also happened to a girl from my school last year, who had a 4.0 GPA UW and 34 ACT. She was waitlisted at UCSD, UCLA, and Cal, and only accepted to UCI. Thankfully, she was admitted off the waitlist at UCLA.
If I were you, I’d accept a spot on the waitlist and cross my fingers for the rest of the decisions. Best of luck to you.
@finallyfree Unless you goofed around a lot in high school and didn’t do your best, I can’t imagine your parents will think any less of YOU. They will probably be shocked that admissions is so competitive that your great grades, test scores and ECs didn’t get you into Davis. (It’s a shock to me, too.) Keep in mind that you were waitlisted, not denied. You have an excellent chance of being admitted to both SD and Davis, although it might be June before you find out. I know it feels bad, but if you can honestly say you tried your best in your classes, then you did all you could. Even if you didn’t study all the time, I think that’s fine … everyone needs to have some fun and a little bit of a social life.
@mothergoldenbear lol, i told my mother and she responded “What are you doing?” in a very disappointing tone. She had an office meeting so she quickly ended the conversation and went back to her work. still didnt tell my dad though.
