@collegelife101: Yes, a higher percentage of OOS students are accepted to the UC’s with higher Stats?, they are still a small fraction in comparison of in-state students that are accepted at the UC’s. Janet Napolitano wants to freeze the amount of in-state students accepted and accept more OOS to help alleviate the budget crisis. I am a California taxpayer and I feel that yes we need to find a solution to the UC and Cal State budget problems, but not at the expense of our own students which cannot get into their own state schools. Although Statistics in the past years indicate OOS applicants have higher Stats overall, when you check the decision threads, the Stats posted do not correlate. Although CC posters are not a representative group, I am seeing lower Stats for OOS acceptances than in-state. Both my sons have gone through the admission process and are attending good schools, I just feel bad for the all the California applicants to follow. They will be competing for fewer and fewer spots in your California schools.
@finallyfree if it makes you feel better, I don’t think there’s any way for me to go to UCSD anyway, because I was placed in Eleanor Roosevelt as a science major. There’s no possible way for me to graduate in four years with all the Gen Ed requirements and major/minor requirements I would have, and that’s assuming I’m optimistic about my 2015 AP exam scores and no study abroad, which I really want to do. There just isn’t enough overlap between the prereqs for Eleanor Roosevelt and the prereqs for my major. They say that you can switch “colleges” if you can’t graduate in four years, but from what I’ve heard its almost impossible. It’s really hard for me to justify spending oos rates when I know that it will take me an extra year, so…another spot for one of you, I hope! It’s a bummer because I really love that part of California and I loved going to UCSD when I lived there. It just doesn’t make sense to me that two people majoring in the exact same subject going to the same university would have drastically different prereqs…not a huge fan of UCSD’s system in that respect.
@Qwerty568 alright, good luck on all your decisions. UCSD is a good school. think about it.
People with a lot lower UC GPA’s got into Engineering at UCSD; including some people here on CC. So it was probably something else that did it.
well i didnt have any engineering related EC’s. i talked about how i liked tinkering with machines and helped fix stuff in a village in india, but i dont have any “professional” internships or awards. i did have volunteer hours (about 300), i tutored people in math and chem, and I helped make a documentary. those were my main EC’s.

I’ve heard that UCs take a holistic approach so we won’t really know what the tipping point was. Do you think they “separate” the applicants into different categories and take the top of each category which could account for the varying scores? Oh well…
Keep your chin up. Your perfect school will come and you’ll be just fine. Sometimes it’s hard to see the forest among the trees. Good luck!
@onlyrodeo thsnks, but I already got rejected from my dream school, Georgia tech.
@onlyrodeo anyway, I wasn’t too sad. I think my parents were more disappointed than me.
UCs take a hollistic approach and no matter how high your numbers are, they dont really indicate what UC you will get into. Its frustrating but there are other things they look for that make or break your chances of being accepted.
