How did you score on your SATs the first time you took them?

I'm taking the sats for the first time this october and i wanted to see how much you guys got your first time and how much you improved your second time and what you did to improve~

also, how would a score like 2100 look to adcoms compared to a 2300 or so?

The very first time I took it I got a 1130 (old SAT) but I was in 7th grade, so I don't think that's what you're looking for. When I took it last March (I was a junior) I got a 2290. I retook for some stupid reason and got a 2350.

Obviously, a 2300 is better than a 2100, but in all likelihood it will not make or break your decision. And it depends at where you're looking; at HYPSM, 2100 is a definite weakness. At, say, NYU, 2100 is perfectly fine.

ahhh okay well i AM looking at mit/caltech/columbia/cornell/john hopkins/rice

0_0

im going to be a junior next week when school starts and well... right now im at around 2050 or so in the tests in the official sat study guide... :(

First and only time I got a 2370 (770 writing). You probably shouldn't have waited until October..but you can also register for both the October test and November test. The October test will be in time for ED and November in time for RD. If you score well in October, just cancel your November sign up. That's what I would do.

vin is a junior...tell me it's not late for juniors!!!????

It's not too late for juniors.

It's just the right time..............

:) If you're a junior, you can even wait longer. Study and take the December or January test, and then if you need to, take March, and then June. Try to take SAT IIs in May (around AP time, so you can study for both at once).

first time - 2280 (soph) - 680 CR (no idea how this happened)
second time - 2360 (jr) - 760 CR (eh...could have done better)

To clarify: a 2100, even at HYPSM, is not a weakness. People always assume that if it isn't at the average, then it's a weakness. It isn't. For one, somebody has to be below that "average" (and don't try to tell me that those people are URMs/legacies/athletes, because there aren't enough of them and there are plenty of people in those groups with very high stats). On top of that, a 2100 is within range for all of them. Of course, you can improve -- you can improve a 2390, even -- but it won't make a significant difference, nor would I call a 2100 a "weakness," even at the Ivies.

2190 in January (740 CR, 720 M, 730 W)
2400 in June

I know, kind of random, but I'll take it. Oh, and i'm a senior.

^ But wouldn't you agree that it makes admission a bit harder if you have a 2100 compared to say...a 2300?

2270 in january junior year, and then i was done.

2100 junior year (700 CR, 680 M, 720 WR)

Might take it again this fall

2200 ( 710m 720cr 770cr). soph.

730 CR, 760 M, 780 W. 1490 M+CR. One and done.

I'm in the same boat as OP...last practice test PR is about 2050 & hoping to take oct (junior year)

on my first practice test (before any prep classes), I got a 1960.

Real thing in 12/06 - 2210
More prep...then 03/07- 2240 (actual score was lower, but this is the composite)

If you have prepared (as in, actually did several practice tests; I did around 10 real practice tests) and know the material and the "tricks" of the test, it is pretty unlikely that your scores will improve much. My scores in each area have stayed fairly consistent, increasing or decreasing no more than 50 points. It really depends on the curve (i.e. -3 math in 12/06 was 760, -3 in 03/07 was 710, or something to that effect).

If all else fails with the SAT, try the ACT. That's what I'm doing in September as a final effort to have a decently high score before I apply to college.

2330 (760 Math, 770 CR, 800 Writing) Junior year in June 07

I NEVER looked back! haha, I am done with the SAT

^ha if i get your score i wouldn't look back either :P

vin-- here's a thread circa 2005 that addresses self-reports (51 total on the thread) of improvement between 1st try SAT and 2nd try:
