Last year, during AP exam season, I became nocturnal and slept mostly in the day while I would stay up until 5 or even 6 AM in the morning. (I go to school at around 7:30). I bet many of you have experienced this before and I would like to know how you coped with it.

My teacher's were lenient on my sleeping but I sat in the back and I sort of "hid" myself. I'm a good student and I never ever slept before the exams started coming up.

How do you guys manage from the lack of sleep? I will be taking 5 APs and 1 honors this year and I want to know how to survive without dying from lack of sleep. I want to try Monster or some energy drink but my parents say they are bad for my health and make you addicted to them (you get ever sleepier if you don't drink them).

I don't know how to cope with this... Should I just sleep when I want to? Seriously, I work so much better when I'm attentive and widely awake...

Do you guys think it is OK to sleep in class, especially during AP season and whatnot? I feel contrition when I sleep because I worry that they might think I don't want to learn or pay attention in the class. But I guess if you get good grades and are known to be a good student it is okay right? I definitely will have to sleep at some period this year in classes and just hate sleep-listening because that saves barely any amount of energy.. I'd rather just sleep like a baby than sleep learn because I just can't learn as effeciently. :D

I think as long as you talk to your teachers and they're okay with it, I wouldn't see a problem.

Honestly, I think (especially if they're AP teachers) if you tell them what's going on and you're an otherwise great student, that they will understand.

there comes a point when studying in the wee hours of the morning that you're not doing anything productive any more and you just need to go to sleep.
but that being said....coffee. although it does suck to get OUT of a coffee habit-- caffeine headaches abound...

I almost never went to sleep before junior year...jr yr, I considered it a great feat if i didn't go to sleep in any of my classes for an entire day

that said, I'm a great student and did well on my APs...my AP teachers liked me best and I got the best grades in AP classes, even though I slept in their classes the most

I would think that it would give your teachers a bad impression, even if they never brought up the problem with you. The solution really depends on WHY your not sleeping though. If it's a problem of you physically not being able to sleep, then I think you best see a doctor to prescribe medicine. However, if you're staying up to complete homework assignments and study, then the problem is simply time management.

Why not try to get some sleep at night (its good for your brain) and do your homework during class? I mean that way you won't have to stay up until 5/6 in the morning.

there's a book called Power Sleep that can help you make a lifestyle change so you get enough sleep and have enough energy all day. i've heard tons of good reviews about it and i'm planning on reading it too. i went to a lecture by the author, and i now manage to get 8 hours of sleep per night, as opposed to the 6 i used to get. here's a link to it on amazon:

I'm not an expert or anything, but I suggest not sleeping/napping for 24 hours and then going to sleep at the time you want to go to sleep every night. Drink coffee if it helps you get through the day but make sure it wears out by the time you plan to go to sleep. Works for me.

Thanks for all of your replies! I will be sure to look into those links that you guys posted. How can you manage time with 5 APs? You'll be simply doing homework for the majority of the time right? I mean I do homework once I get home but it takes me a looong time. I'll try doing homework more during the school day now.

It also takes me like 1-2 hours to sleep at night because I keep thinking! haha, do you ever just think about what happened during the day or what is going to happen (test or exam)? It just makes you alert and keept thinking... Then when I can't sleep I say to myself: Man, I just wasted 1 hour thinking and doing nothing.. I could have studied or something. Then I get up and study more! :D

I'm probably doing something wrong though right?

i do that all the time, nucleus. i find that if i start thinking about something when i lie down to go to sleep, i start to think about other things, and before i know it, i've spent 3 hours lying in bed just thinking. so how do i try to prevent that? i try to picture the color white and just think "white" and any time an idea pops into my head, i start thinking "white" again. blankness. doesn't always work, considering it took me a few hours to fall asleep last night, but sometimes it does the trick.

everybody has a different method that works for them, it'll just takes time to figure out what works best for you.

Take a couple of allergy pills (the non-non-drowsy kind), read a few chapters of a good book (by nightlight of course) and then find your correct position. Mine is on my stomach looking left. Just make sure you put the alarm clock over by your door so you make sure you get up on time.

my mom always yells at me not to sleep on my stomach because i will get wrinkles, but i just have to. ive tried to sleep on my side and back but it just doesnt work out.

to the op, i think you can do all the work and still sleep if you have good time management skills. really good skills. a lot of kids stay up late and work during the week and then sleep a lot during the weekend, but i think its better do to the opposite. i try and work ahead a lot during the weekends so that i can go to bed at a decent time during the school week.

For one day, make every effort to stay awake and sleep-deprived until 11 PM or so. Use caffeine, energy drinks -- do whatever you have to do. Then go to sleep. You'll notice the lack of sleep and will fall asleep despite not being "on cycle."

It's much easier to adjust by forcing yourself to sleep late than forcing yourself to sleep early. This was how I adjusted to China time in one night.
