Let's say I get an F in my class and then retake it the next quarter and get a passing grade. will the F be erased from my transcript?
is getting a W better than getting the F?
HELP please!

academic renewal is for 15 units or 2 semesters of units, so that has little do with your situation.
take the W retake the class next semester. if you have to get an F, retake it next semester, UC’s will recognize the higher grade and eliminate the F from your gpa… unfortunately they wont see the spring grade until you appeal… if you have to appeal.

Each CCC has it’s own academic renewal policy. You’d be much better served speaking with a counselor at your school than taking advice from this forum.

BPkid101: That is the academic renewal policy at your school. Policies differ from campus to campus. Some require 20 semester units, others 24, and some even require two years to have passed since the sub-par grades were received. There are several other little quirks each school has regarding their policies for academic renewal.

sophie24: What you’re talking about is course repetition, not academic renewal. The former requires far fewer steps than academic renewal.

If you are interested in ever doing academic renewal, you will need to look up your campus’ policy regarding it. Each campus is different in how they handle it.

Note the F will not be “eliminated” as BPkid101 put it nor will it be erased as you asked. It will remain on your record, but it will not be factored into your GPA if you either repeat the course for a C or better grade or if you apply academic renewal to it.

thank you Kender.

I think I will be going with the W

“Note the F will not be “eliminated” as BPkid101 put it nor will it be erased as you asked. It will remain on your record, but it will not be factored into your GPA if you either repeat the course for a C or better grade or if you apply academic renewal to it.”

Same with D’s as well, correct?

asdfey: Yes, Ds and Fs are both candidates for academic renewal and for course repetition. You cannot do course repetition on any grade of C or better, though. Academic renewal on a grade of C or better depends on your campus’ policy regarding academic renewal.

Some schools require you to perform academic renewal on an entire semester/quarter rather than on individual courses. This means that even courses you received a C or better in will also be “academically renewed” and no longer counted towards your GPA. Also, in this case, often times rather than a set unit limit for renewal, you are simply limited by the number of semesters/quarters you can renew.

There are schools, though, that will allow you to pick and choose the units you would like to renew rather than forcing you to renew everything class within a given semester/quarter. With these, though, you are often limited to a set number of units you can renew.

It would be nice if all schools had the same or at least similar policy, but I guess they just want to keep us on our toes ;)?

I guess I should have elaborated.

I have completed an academic renewal, I have also repeated classes that I have flunked.

By eliminated I meant, they will place an E(short for eliminated) next to the F/D on your transcript. meaning it is eliminated from your GPA for UC purposes. Not all schools will honor this.

I didn’t think the academic renewal really needed more specification than that, it clearly wasn’t right for her situation… I was merely giving her an overview of one.

Guess I will be more specific in the future. Thanks guys.

TAKE THE ‘W’ EVERY TIME!

no one cares about Ws…
an F, however, will screw you when it comes to grad school apps.

oh…my gosh…you guys can still get drop with w’s? It seems to late in the semester for that. take the damned w.
